Deus Ex: HR's PC Preview Build version has leaked

Is anyone else finding the cover system makes the game way to easy? I've finished DX 1 on easy and it felt a hell of a lot harder than this does on "give me deus ex". The problem seems to be that there is rarely any room for the enemies to flank so you can just sit back and wait for the perfect time to pop out and head shot them.

I'm thinking of playing on a controller in the hope that the shooting becomes hard enough to force me into looking for stealth alternatives.

Other than that though, the feel of the game is incredibly faithful to Deus Ex and even with my complaints of the cover system, it did feel slick and lot's of fun to play. It's just that ramping up the difficulty doesn't really make the game much harder.

This game looks god, eat shit graphics whores.

It looks like arse, but so did Deus Ex. In other words, I don't see why a Deus Ex fan should care, as I certainly don't.

It definitely does feel easier, though I think this might be a step taken to let this appeal more to the "dudebro" demographic who would put it down within the first 10-15 minutes without any mechanics like this.

Man, I must really suck. I had to do that part in one sidemission where you had to take out a gangmember without killing him at least 10 times. I either kept killing him with explosives while trying to take out the other guys, or got shot in face and died a bunch of times.

Tried a bunch of different tactics too, but maybe I was just in a funk. Everything else does seem easy though, I agree

People's faces look poopy in high res, but who gives a fuck? It's Deus Ex!

Is it a big spoiler UNATCO exists? D:

the only graphical thing I have a comment about is that people wiggle about too much while talking, to make them seem... 'alive', I guess. plus not enough emotions in faces.

edit: Damn. Hope UNATCO is a reveal early in the game and not something like end-game spoilers.

Yeah, I'd say so. I didn't know it existed until about 5 minutes ago. :\

If you're referring to the theme I posted, it plays within the first 10 minutes of the game. I have no idea if UNATCO actually exists or not. Either way, I apologize. Maybe I should spoiler tag it?

Heaps of the pre-release information, including before any actual footage was released, talks about how the game's events will lead to the formation of UNATCO.

I wouldn't consider it a spoiler.

My personal speculation involves the bombing of the Statue of Liberty, since I don't think that has happened at the beginning of the game yet.

This isn't likely, due to DX HR being set in 2027, while the bombing of the Statue of Liberty
by UNATCO as revealed in Deus Ex
doesn't happen until 2051, a year before the events of Deus Ex.

OK new idea.

I'm going to unbind the 3rd person view button and the takedown buttons and just wipe them from my abilities. I'll also swap to medium to balance the difficulty a tad.

Now all I need is for someone to mod in lean buttons and some more short range knock out items like the stun prod, then I'll truly have Deus Ex :)

Have you played a video game ever before?
of course? What kind of question is that?

My point is I was very much hyped up

<----avatar

and when I played what I did it was just so boring. AI was retarded, the control scheme was mostly PC oriented but still was kind of sketchy (cover, shooting and aiming from cover, the cover system needs to be less sticky, why can't right click to get a popup menu, instead of left clicking, wtf), I already had a ton of augs it seems like, the graphics are bad (not art style, I mean texture work and lighting are inconsistent). Where is dedicated melee? Why do I have to spend energy to punch a dude in the face? I have two bionic arms, why can't I be fucking Robo Muhammad Ali?

I did like the hacking minigame and the ebooks and news paper articles. I liked I could turn Highlighting off because of how obnoxious it is, and it takes all the exploration fun out of the game if you know exactly where everything is.

Other than bug fixes, and minor changes I don't really see this changing too much from what you see here as this is only like 4 months old.

Beta->retail does not really change too much, and is why I didn't dock it on being crashy or having bugs, because that is to be expected. Perhaps the lighting is buggy as of this build, and SSAO and tesselation as well. That's not such a big deal. That I expect to get all filled out.

The game looks better in the trailers, though who's to say how doctored those have been. The recent E3 video of gameplay halfway through the game didn't look that much different from what we see here. However I will admit it was played on the PS3 so that could explain why.

Yeah, same. I really hope I'll get a physical copy...

Do you get a physical copy if you preorder retail? The book and soundtrack I must have!

As far as graphics go I don't think the the game looks bad. Just nothing special and someone mentions textures. Everything is flat. When someone say textures I think of bump mapping etc...Mass Effect engine is better than this one unless the final is ramped up.
It's just the style for me I guess. I like nice clean numbers up on walls, the detail on Jensen's clothing and the desk in Sarif's office, that stuff stands out as "yummy" for me. Once you get up close though textures are absolutely lacking, I just like the overall design of the levels (sharp and clean surfaces, the "MGS2 look", if you will), I think the environments look great in those pictures I posted, but it's down to personal preference.

This is one thing I got used to after a while and now I actually think it's a better approach than having dedicated melee. When you have stealth and weapons to incapacitate enemies silently in one hit (batons, dragon's tooth, EMP charged attacks (IW only?)) without using up ammo that tends to be the most efficient way to go. And it's fun, for sure, but having it like this adds a lot of variation and more inventory management. The stun gun works much like a melee weapon but it needs ammo, melee is unlimited and very powerful but you need to wait for it to recharge so it isn't overpowered like it was before. You need to think about which enemies are worth taking down and which method is the best one to use instead of simply running up and punching everyone in the back of the head.

It seems a bit flakey at first but I think it's a more elegant solution that makes the game more fun, although I would like it if they stuck to first-person for the animation. That decision makes more sense once you upgrade the melee to take out two adjacent enemies at the same time though, I guess.

I think it's a perfectly good solution. You practically lost your arms and have to do with these augmentations to perform even the most basic motoric actions. To knock the fuck out someone with a single punch would need quite some energy.

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else think this game looks absolutely marvelous? I haven't played the game since I finished the preview build (which was excellent btw), but I took a lot of pics via fraps and every time I see them, or show friends, I/we're amazed out how much the game often looks like a drawing.

This is a pic I took for instance.

dxhr5_win72011-06-010157cf.jpg

Graphically though, the game is pretty average, but art style, atmosphere etc are in a league of their own. And often, the game is a marvel to look at in still pictures.

Oh and the intro credits, with the incredibly dramatic music are insanely well made! One of the best intros ever imo.

It looks good artistically. IMO I'd like a bit more AA and some AF and, from a design point I'd like more physics on objects but most everything is tied down which isn't too cool.

Also fire I heard doesn't spread? How will I collect bodies and throw them in a trash can and set the whole thing on fire?

Yep, the preview build confirmed my day 1 purchase. The game looks absolutely incredible, and it plays just like the first game.

Yeah but so would swinging your arms back and forth when you're sprinting, or opening a door, or lifting a filled crate (which you do no problem). Sometimes all you do is choke someone a bit from behind, something I can already do with my non-augmented strength. Sometimes you do kung fu shit and knock out 2 guys with head-slams that is clearly far more impressive. They take the same energy.

This isn't justifiable in the story, it's best if you just ignore it as a gameplay conceit like so many other things.

The game goes between amazing and terrible. Jensen's face/hair is abysmal for example, and the big signs in the Sarif HQ have this godawful thing that I cannot even begin to describe properly. It's like there are these black lines all through it that curve in weird ways, I think it's caused by the Anistropic Filtering?

A few preview build comments:

* if Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a pure stealth game, it would be top-tier. The enemies behave a lot more convincingly than usual. I especially like it when they turn their heads independently of their bodies, which can give a nasty surprise to players used to robotic search paths. The cover system is absolutely brilliant design, because it works really well for stealth and combat alike.

* Hacking is really cool. I love being able to occasionally hack a system without triggering the detection.

* The augs are so, so much better than in Deus Ex.

* I was a bit concerned about the writing/story initially. Now I'm not.

* The conversational system is incredible, and easily one of the best in the genre. Granted, I haven't been using the Social Enhancer aug, which might make things too easy, but so far picking the right dialogue responses has been challenging and fascinating. It's nothing like Bioware's output and it might even trump Obsidian.

Unless the full game has a drastic drop in quality, Human Revolution is going to end up better than Deus Ex. For reference, Deus Ex was in my top 3 games of all time.

Awesome, man. After the shite second game it's always reassuring to hear Deus Ex 1 fans praise this game after hands-on.

Did you play with the highlighting on or off?

I wish the texture resolution on the PC version was better. Imagine if this game had texture work on par with The Witcher 2. That would be amazing. I suppose you could say the same for just about every game in this generation, though.

This game gives me a MGS vibe, I haven't played any Deus:EX game so forgive my ignorance, the vibe to me comes not only for the stealth gameplay but the game's art and graphic's.
I am so looking forward to play this game.

Sounds like I will go with a Stealth/Hacker character rather than a aug-ed up dudebro.

I really love my customised semi-auto pistol.

I noticed that bullets seem to lose stopping power over distance depending on caliber. Can't remember the last time a game did that.

The gameplay really feels like DE1.

You die so easily, but I don't want to invest points in dermal armour. Not when other augs give you brand new abilities or open up new parts of the map.

The style is pretty much MGS + Blade Runner + Renaissance ruffs.

In all the right proportions, too.

It's funny. Generally a leak like this would be considered a bad thing, but this is almost definitely going to do great things for the sales of this game, on the PC at least. So many people I know who were skeptical, especially after the impressions given after the original gameplay previews (Yellow outlines on EVERYTHING, cutscenes for takedowns?), are definitely getting this game now. Myself included.

Words cannot express the crushing feeling I felt when I ran into the invisible wall around the helicopter.

This looks good.

Are those max settings and have you downsampled the image?

Yeah, good thing I got that fixed for us.

Off, but I tried out the highlighting and it was very inobtrusive.

Is the soundtrack in here mostly synthesized like in the first game? Or is it more orchestral? I like orchestral music but for this game it has to be mostly synth stuff all the way

All synth, at least as far as I've noticed. It's very reminiscent of Deus Ex 1.

Oh my God man. Despite how stacked the fall lineup is this year this is just sounding more and more like my game of the year.

Thanks for your answers guys. Now I'm out of these threads until release.

This is coming out in 2012.

EDIT: Oh Hell, wrong game. Sorry.
