Deus Ex: HR's PC Preview Build version has leaked

the thing about alpha protocol is hilarious. didn't even bother playing the game. just goes to show a lot of them just base their beliefs and opinions on the others.
That was just one guy though, Jeff reviewed it and gave it 3/5 i.e. "brilliant besides the janky gunplay". I was quite surprised about that really, but the main point I guess is that they put some things above others, if the shooting doesn't feel the same as every other game ever then that's going to be frowned upon while other, more creative features don't carry as much weight.

HR does a lot of things right with the gunplay though, you don't have to put skills into shooting to be effective, but you don't get a lot of ammo for the assault rifle, which will probably take down the scores a bit. I'm interested to see if their views will shift once they play the preview build.

true. didn't mean to generalize. I just have a hunch this game wont get a fair shake from critics that don't care. which is a shame

Yeah, it has some minor "jank" in areas where you usually need to be called Bioware in order to get a free pass from the press. I just felt like I needed to make a counter statement since I threw that other one out there, at least Jeff isn't as bad as Brad and Ryan about that stuff, if we're talking GB. He just really likes CoD.

I'm not hugely optimistic either. Even if this is an action heavy RPG (if you want to) that feels better IN EVERY AREA than the 10/10 machine that is Mass Effect, it being in first person will probably drop the blinds over that piece of insight for most reviewers. Worst scenario would be if it reviews poorly and sells well, I wouldn't want that sequel.

I really miss being able to just pick any old crap up and fling it around.

Yeah I'm saddened to hear this has taken a nose dive. Maybe it's just nostalgia kicking in, but I felt looking at/interacting with/picking up everything in Dues Ex to be a substantial part of the experience.

This beta probably is indirectly something very good for the devs. I really hope it sells well because it really deserves it.

That's just nostalgia talking. Deus Ex is rather sparsely populated with objects that's why you can interact with a lot of them. Human Revolution has a lot of objects in the environment simply for cosmetic purposes.

It might be disappointing that this game that's coming out years later doesn't have a ton more objects to fling around compared to Deus Ex but there aren't any fewer of them either.

All I remember in Deus Ex 1 was lots of boxes (metal, cardboard) and bags of trash.

Whaaaat, I mean, the nostalgic part is fun and interacting with everything is fun (I like it in DNF) but the rest of the game clearly reeks of quality and real Deus Ex gameplay.

Does anyone know what the demo was like? I have to imagine any of those complaints will disappear by the time they hit the city. This shit is Deus Ex. If it doesn't blow in later chapters MGS4-style, this will be one of my favorite games of the year.

I am not so quick to hate on the press because maybe it was a bad demo. Patrick of GB is a little douchey though. I have hard time believing his favorite game is Deus Ex.

Well, saying Deus Ex is your favorite game is a specious way to achieve credibility with a certain subset of the gaming public. Deus Ex has that overly complex seemingly archaic design that is completely absent from nearly every modern game. A good metric is to look at someone's reception of Mass Effect 2. Is it a good game, maybe, but it shed any of the qualities that someone who liked a game like Deus Ex loved about the KOTOR games from which Mass Effect evolved. Why are depth and complexity in game mechanics being shunned? One of the most compelling aspects of gaming is learning systems and operating within them to achieve goals. The more challenging and extensible the game mechanics the better the experience, in my opinion

Since there aren't any melee weapons, it would be great if they detached takedowns from the energy cell limit. You should be able to use them whenever you want, as it's not something you can really abuse, anyway. I don't think it really makes sense for the cells to drain when the actions are pretty simple.

That's exactly the reason why they are limited by energy cells. Every offensive action other than throwing objects takes up resources. That's why there aren't any crates to smash for loot. Although I am not entirely sure as to why they decided to design the game this way. But other than cheats/mods this isn't going to change.

The UI seems built with console controls in mind first, and PC controls second. I think you'll be fine, though personally I still prefer playing this sort of game on PC.
Yeah, I agree, 360 version is my second option. It's just I've waiting for a good Deus Ex sequel for a long time so I don't know if I'll be able to wait if I don't have my new PC by August 23rd.

Everything is out in the open now. Mainly because there aren't any melee weapons to smash things with.
Aw, that's kinda disappointing, but I guess not important. Seems like you wouldn't need melee weapons for combat since you can pull off crazy hand-to-hand moves instead.

Played the leak. Not sure I'll buy it in retail. Sure it was a good imitation, but it wasn't the real thing. The little details, such a the world, news, newspapers, logs and e-mails were mostly boring or lacking soul.

Because you're the only person to play the game and think this, you're obviously objectively wrong.

I watched someone play partially through on YouTube. Anyone know if they're going to redo some of the character models? Facial animation looks like its not finalize but the character models look very very low polygon.

I doubt it. The release date is just a bit more than two months away. They don't really have time to redo anything.

I just started this and was nervous to do so after the Giantbomb E3 impressions.

Man were they wrong. So far it's everything I would have wanted out of a new Deus Ex game. If they can keep up the quality I've seen so far throughout, this will definitely be up there in contention for GOTY.

Pre-order re-confirmed. I may even pick it up on console as well.

The only terrible thing: I couldn't figure out a silent way to smash crates

Anybody know?
Yeah pretty sure this is going to be like Deus Ex. Any kind of smashing is going to cause noise and alert anyone nearby. They won't start shooting at you but they won't ignore it either.

Oh also just figured something out. If you don't drain the battery completely it will recharge. So a melee take down or the typhoon system will drain it completely and you lose it. But something temporary like cloak or silent movement or something else, as long as you turn it off before it uses up the cell completely it's going to recharge.

Yeah... The Giantbomb crew really aren't the brightest of the bunch... They seem to enjoy only mainstream or fighting games.

I like how you imply Giantbomb likes non-mainstream fighting games. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 4 are as mainstream as fighting games can get. Jeff doesn't like much else and the rest don't play fighting games much at all.

The leaked build we're playing was from January/February (when it went out to journalists). Note that the highlighted ladders when you climb them was present in this build when they said they removed that bug several months ago.

Why would you be nervous because of gaming press' E3 opinions? They are absolutely worthless. The more time goes on the more I'm convinced that not a single member of the gaming press has an opinion backed up by anything other than "OOOHHH SHINY!"

Where's this GB impression? God they piss me off sometimes.

They piss me off frequently. Watching them fumble through quick looks is fucking embarrassing when they can't work out basic functionality that the tutorial told them, or should be common knowledge for gamers. None of them had played a Civ game before, the Civ V quick look was like having teeth extracted.

Well, I'm pretty sure that's not true. Coulda swore Ryan played Civ 4 at the very least. I don't know who did the QL for 5, though.

True, but I like the guys at Giantbomb based on the weekly podcast and was bummed to hear any negative light on this game since most of the coverage has been positive up until E3.

Anyways, fears averted. This game is awesome.

I think it was implied in some podcasts, that the demo level at E3 was somewhere in the middle of the game, with a single objective. Which the press reacted badly to, and is a poor way to show Deus Ex.

The pay off in Deus Ex is having certain minor side objectives and mission decisions come together in an unexpected ways, in levels where you are traversing the environment in your own style, with your own build. After you replay the game and decided to put 2 more points into hacking, you realise a whole new avenue in the level is now available to you, with possibly its own unique rewards and side objectives. This is what makes Deus Ex great.

Impossible to show in a 30min demo, but we know from the demo build and the leaked build that they have achieved this. I wish more press journalists acknowledged this, because it feels like poor reporting otherwise.

I'm a bit confused as to why people are angry about what Giant Bomb said. It was their opinion about their limited time with the game. Unless I'm missing something where they said the game is destined to fail or something?

They said it looked really bad and it seemed like it was made by a b dev team and they thought it was not living up to the hype as the "good deus ex sequel" pretty harsh I dunno if I'd go that far without playing the final release

But what if they said it was destined to be an all time great game? Would people then say they were going too far without playing the final game? Think some of this is a case of "I disagree, so fuck them".

Let me rephrase that: I'd like to smash crates without having to shoot them.

Does using suppressor help in any way?

That depends. If they said it was going to be an amazing game I immediately wonder what brought them to that conclusion. It sounds like giantbomb got a preview game and now they're talking as though the problems are structural, not just complaining about bugs

I wonder if they only got to play that e3 demo..

PC Gamer and several other publications got the version (that later leaked) through Steam and had several hours of gameplay with which to form an opinion on their own time.

Fair enough. I'm also in the camp who doesn't buy too much into previews from the media, I just didn't find GB's statements about Deus Ex any more egregious than the usual snap judgments from the media about games that haven't come out.

I think the difference in this case is that many of us have played the press preview build of the game for several hours and have formed our own opinions about the game. That isn't usually the case.. as it would simply be a story of one site having a different opinion than another.

Some of what they said seems ignorant in light of the game a lot of us have played and the problem is that we don't know if they got to play the same preview version that a lot of us did or if they're only basing those comments off of the E3 2011 demo, which was apparently more focused than the preview.
