Deus Ex: HR's PC Preview Build version has leaked

Yep... people in 2027 ignore their IT Admin just like they do now.

Pritchard expressly told them not to write their passwords down on sticky notes next to their computers in one of his security alert e-mails.

So how do I get this? It makes a clicking sound when accessing it. Also no keys in the room either.

Can I keep the crossbow :(

Quick heads up for those who haven't played the leaked build, I'm writing a two-part preview on my blog. First part is a general gameplay overview, detailing how the game works and stacks up against the original, plus where improvements are made and where it could be better. The second part, next week, will be something closer to a walkthrough, with more details on story, choices etc.

Part One here. If you've got any questions, dump them in the comments so I have an easily accessible list to tackle for next week.

You can
lie to the police about how you never found a crossbow and then keep it.

But can you open the suitcase? I don't remember if I could.

I thought that was hilarious. On a related note:
"Do not leave your computers without locking them!"
*Finds half the computers in the company unlocked*

No, but when I found the other suitcase adam mentioned it. Also the girl didn't believe me but was like "well if you say so" when I said that about the crossbow.

We can't discuss where to get this on this forum.

Anyway, so I was playing through the game with a different set of augs. I decided to take a different approach to a certain level, and a certain security camera was bugging me with this approach.

On this playthrough, I had the heavy lifting aug when I didn't have it before. So I tried throwing a photocopier at the camera.

The camera exploded.

I. Love. This. Damn. Game.

Yeah, I got it. Loved it. had to tear myself away from it. Skipped all cut scenes and a lot of dialogue. Just wanted to get familiar with the controls and how things flowed. The people look pretty awful and are quite behind other games in animation, but everything else is soo good. The music is awesome.

After playing this I pre-ordered the game. The leak was probably the best thing that could have happened.

I am a bit concerned that the game didnt run very well for me on my system:
Phenom II X2 555 3.2Ghz
GTX 460
4GB Ram

I'm just going to chalk that up to poor beta optimization and hope for the best. It was chugging and sputtering abit much.

What? I had 60fps at all times. The vsync in this game is busted and caps the framer ate at 30.

Might be the wrong thread for this, but does anybody know whether Visual Works (the SE CG team) is going to be doing any CG for the actual game, or were those trailers all we're going to get?

Final verdict: First day buy yes or no? How many hours can you get out of it just doing the bare minimum storyline? I love everything about it so far (that i've seen from videos) except the automatic take downs which are kind of cheap and seem like they can get repetitive, but maybe they fit in well i don't know.

Buy yes. Total playtime don't know. The majority of the content/depth in the leaked preview comes from the side stuff, exploration and looking for alternative paths. Trying to burn through the story via the shortest path is kind of missing the point of the game.

The takedowns are wonderfully integrated by the way. They don't feel out of place in the least, and I find myself wishing the first Deus Ex had them as well.

They do get repetitive if you do most of your hostile interactions with them. And since they're canned and not contextual, some feel very off while sneaking in a room filled with enemies.

I don't see how we couldn't have just had a melee button. But no, cutscene take downs are "cooler" *eyes roll out of head at the speed of light*

i agree with cutscenes being a little annoying, but Deus Ex games have always tied melee to a weapon and it being performed by the same 'attack' command as you would a gun, etc. it would be very un-Deus Ex to actually have a dedicated melee command/button.

i wonder if we ask hard enough if they would consider coming up with a way to speed up the takedown process. a "quick takedowns" option that keeps it AT LEAST in third person view (behind adam) and it being a quicker animation. at very least for when you sneak up behind someone and take them down. CLICK>BAM>MOVE ON.

...or can enemies 'discover' you while the takedown animation is still going on? that could be reason for them to leave them alone, as a quicker takedown would give you less time to get caught, thus less risk.

Gone gold. No fixes for you. Really though, the take downs seemed to work just fine for me. I play stealthy in any game like this and it was never a hindrance. Just takes proper timing with enemy ai routes to not get spotted.

Some kind of a game ballance/mechanics reason. Absolutely everything that can kill/incapacitate an enemy is controlled by some kind of resource. Energy or ammo.

Here's the second part of an extended preview I've been writing.

This one's basically a walkthrough, detailing each area in the demo, some of the decisions you can make, secrets to be found and why the boss battle at the end is thematically problematic. Obviously it's SPOILERIFFIC. For a more general overview of the gameplay, you can read the first part here, which is a lot safer for people trying to avoid learning anything too specific on the content-front.

Just downloading the preview build atm.

I have a few questions, and I apologies if they have been answered already.I have the game pre-purchased from steam, but I really want to play it so I thought why not.

Anywho,

Does dx11 work, AA/AF work.I've seen some screenshots of the preview build and they appear all jagged, that's why I am asking.

Is it the preview build just a preview, or is it the full game?.

How buggy is it?

That's it

Thanks.

1. DX 11 changes the lighting primarily in this build it's old code
2. didn't notice/care about AA/AF
3. it's about 10 hours of the game.. (supposedly 1/3 of the final game)
4. It has some bugs.. tutorial video text doesn't match the scene, has console buttons for the tutorial videos (360 controller buttons), long load times, during some conversation cutscenes, the camera ends up inside the npc's mouth.. facing out towards you.

We're so close to the full release at this point.. I'd advise that you not play the leak or at least don't play much past the first actual mission.. it'll feel better if you go through it the first time on final code.

Thanks for the reply!

I've just been reading through this thread, probably should have done it before myself.I like reading people's impressions and such, but yeah my super hyped. Can't believe it has been so long since a DX game.

Preview Build sold me on the game. Basically felt like a good demo. Game is awesome. Kinda felt like the latest Splinter Cell in a way at times. Would be nice if the main character could grab ledges and do a pull-up, though. Having a fire escape just out of reach when he should easily be able to grab it is silly in an otherwise well done experience. Very interested in the final product.

Cant get the game to work.Getting errors when launching it.Is there a way to fix this.It says I am missing a file.

it's ok, found it out.

I fix NPCs like that with a good augmented fist to the face.

100% success rate so far.

Yep. It's a little permanent though.. as they can't ever talk again after your mechanical fist shatters their jaw.

Does the game have a soft look, and fuzzy outlines to everything?

I've turned down some settings, but it still has some fuzz to it.

Turn off post-processing and most of that effect will disappear.

It changes the look of the game significantly and imo, not for the better.

I take it it will be something resolved in the final build.

I hope they "fix" the fact that sparks fly out of people when you shoot them. There's blood, but it looks really strange and make the guns feel less powerful. Reminds me of Goldeneye, same thing happened there.

I'm finding it very hard to read emails ( in the game) with the text being all interlaced when read from the computer you're using.

Hacking I don't understand that much, even after watching the tutorial.. I managed to hack a few though.

One thing I found better than the original is gun combat, which isn't saying much. Not sure on pressing the mouse wheel to aim down sights.Probably work better on a controller.

Have I got this right take downs require energy to perform? Don't know how that will go down in reviews if so.

Decided to play the preview build hooked to my tv with the xbox 360 controller.Wow, what a huge difference I found.Felt more enjoyable, and the controller works just fine.I think I have to stop myself from playing this now from spoiling any more of the game.

So I just finished the original Deus Ex for the first time. How similar is the preview build to the first game? Is there any functionality or gameplay mechanics that have been taken away? Honestly I'll be satisfied if HR is just the original game with current gen graphics.

Similar enough to feel like a worthy sequel. More similar than Invisible War surprisingly enough.

Still there are differences.
The health system is completely different. You now have VERY slow health regen.

The Skill system is gone as far as untrained and trained skills. Now XP earns you augmentation upgrades.

Most everything else is still there or improved.

- Regenerating health.
- All skills, including weapon classes, removed.
- Skills/augs bundled into a single 'augmentation' characters sheet. XP unlocks 'praxis points', and these are used to buy augs.
- Thid person snap-to-cover system for gunfights and stealth. Can stealth roll between cover, blind fire, etc.
- You dont select specific lines of dialogue, but instead the 'tone' of your response (it works wonderfully).
- A lot of main story focused missions will fly you off to a seperate area rather than seamlessly integrate into the hubs (this also seems to work just fine).

Those are the biggest changes I can think of off the top of my head.

Worth noting also is that they "spell it out" for you as you hover over the dialogue option, you know exactly what you're going to say.

Also:

- Swimming removed.

Latter half of Deus Ex becomes this. Theres no more hub after Hong Kong.
