Dev responds to IGN's Haze review - "MEGAowch"

Not too surprised about the review, the demo was as dreary and generic as anything, the game is competent yet woefully bland and predictable. One thing that still interests me despite the monotony is the story, I would still like to see how the devs deal with corporations and war and how they allude to the reality that is taking place in Iraq and elsewhere with private contractors and mercenaries.

One comment in the IGN review I didn't understand was 'Forget the liberation of people from terror; that concept is immediately thrown out of the window, as is any other sense of humanity.'. I thought that was the whole idea, that these warmongers are not there to liberate but to turn a profit and gain strategic control of a region and resources, just like in real life. The IGN reviewer seems a bit dim if he doesn't grasp that. In many ways the babble between the Mantel troops sounds all too familiar to the teenage crap spouted online by gamers.

Also where's the music in Haze? Don't think I've heard any yet, I find it pretty hard to play music-less games for some reason.

Can someone tell me why this game has so much fanfare around it anyway? I dont rememebre anyone making a big deal out of Frontline fuel of war for example.

Is i the fact it has drugs in it?

Famitsu FPS reviews
Haze (PS3, Ubisoft): 9 / 8 / 9 / 8 - (34/40)
The Orange Box (PS3/Xbox 360, EA): 9 / 7 / 9 / 9 - (34/40)
Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3, Sony): 9 / 8 / 8 / 8 - (33/40)
Metroid Prime (GCN, Nintendo): 8/8/8/9 (32/40)
GoldenEye 007 (N64, Nintendo): 7 / 8 / 8 / 8 - (31/40)
Perfect Dark (N64, Nintendo): 7/7/7/7 (28/40)

Haze clearly wins.

I got Haze pegged as a decent and enjoyable game at tops, but hardly anything exceptional, i.e. around 6/10.

So there, my assumptions from looking on a few screens and reading some stuff about it is probably more accurate than the IGN-review anyway.
wat

You really think they would short-change a game like this just for shits and giggles? Niche stuff with unconventional gameplay I can understand, it's very concievable that some people maybe approach those differently than they should and "don't play it right" or whatever. But an FPS, a prolific genre with a pretty rigidly defined gameplay structure? It's hard to be confused by that, I don't doubt for a minute that Haze has some big problems if it can get this from IGN.

IGN clearly didn't realize this game was made by the team behind Goldeneye.

They should have changed the title to Goldenhaze to be sure.

Hah, I told you guys so! Haze is much better than MP, GE and PD, and on par with HL2 + extra shit! Famitsu proves it!

Nah, I just think they rolled a T10 dice twice and took the score from there. GTA IV was just lucky.

The game has looked crap to me from video 1. I'm guessing its hyped due to exclusivity?

hmm yeah seems about right. PD was cut a bit short but apart from that it seems like a pretty accurate list of scores

Theres a nectar joke I wanted to make, but then I remembered how silly the whole concept and everything around it is.

The first time I played the demo I got Turok vibes, in terms of suckiness. I still can't believe they destroyed Haze like that, while they gave that Dinobullshit a decent score.

God Hand is always brought up as an example of IGN missing the boat, but I still think it was a rare exception. I must admit that both writers took the same overly negative "chip on their shoulder" attitude while reviewing them, however.

No Halo series 37/40 scores? Disappointing. :lol

I think it'd be easier to compile a list of times when they're actually on the boat instead of standing on the shore waving it good bye.

They nailed Assassins creed when no-one else would.

Nah, AC should have scored like 6.0. But then again, it's a review and obviously there will be different opinions. So I'll kind of agree with you statement ;)

At least the best reviewers on the planet got it right, the gods of eurogamer!

Heh, that animated gif is incredible. I'd imagine that even the Free Radical guys would get a kick out of that one. :P
