DEVASTATION 2011 | Gaming tournament & convention | October 6-9

even after 800 times, that still doesn't get old

C'mon, I'm just asking. I only started following tournaments and stuff since EVO 2011, I don't know the rules.

What do you guys think of this bracket format?

Winner of each separate bracket (or mini tourny) gets there losses cleared in the top 8? Am I understanding this right?

What if you were in bracket '1" on day 1, then you lost.

Can you enter one of brackets 4-8 the next day to try to get into top 8?

Seems weird, idk. It's interesting.

Wow, Justin Wong trolling hard. I hope that guy just started playing the game or something, because that was really bad.

Guys, stop giving him shit. Especially since they actually are banned in Japanese tournaments now.

Devastation, please streamline your schedule. I understand you guys are doing a lot with the 30-or-so tournaments you're running, but having 3-out-of-5 finals in pools? Really?

Also, brackets, lets try and keep brackets from being chopped up and split midway through a tourney.

again, I appreciate Devastation for trying to keep things interesting, but listening to the streams there is so much confusion as to who should face who. I just watched a match with Alex Valle in MK9 where he lost 2 out of 3 in a Winners final [I think] and they just made it 3 out of 5...

changing the rules on the spot...not a good look

The MK guys have no idea what they are doing. Yesterday they were having a grand finals from each bracket and the person that lost that is maybe eliminated but they are not sure.

Sounds like Arizona is free at running brackets too.

They actually haven't been changed the rules, I just don't think that a lot of the people knew about them. The "Grand Finals" matches are just token ones for prizes.

It's definitely a weird format though.

We like the games. I think the problem is the way everything is presented.

Plus FPS/RTS/ETC events are really corporate, while fighting game events are really grassroots.

Also, the term "eSports" is dumb.

I think the majority of the people who hate on eSports do so not because they're Debby Downers, but because they want it to be better than it is.
ok, but for the most part I see a ton of negativity and not much constructive feedback or productive discussion. I know from experience that a lot of these old school gaming community forums and message boards have some sort of extreme stigma against eSports - whether it be the term itself or the concept as a whole, I'm not sure ;|

I think he's always had them, but he obviously uses contacts while playing.
I think I saw him wearing glasses in a match earlier. Maybe he just didn't have time to put in contacts today or something.

No, they are not banned. For reference in future video games, secret characters are almost never banned. The only time they are is when they're just stupid broken, like 1 hit kills, unblockables, etc. etc., but that hasn't happened in a capcom fighter since circa 2000. In general just blatantly broken characters.

Characters that DO get banned are console specific characters since you won't have a consistent roster lineup from one version of the game to another. Latest example is Yoda/Vader in xbox/ps3 version of SC4. Since majors are on typically one system, it would be unfair to users that only play on one to have a character dis/advantage.

So unless you hear anything otherwise, a character will 99% not be banned. Hope that helps.

Hey he's playin vs Jakob from louisiana. He's a great player but gets super flustered/nervous if things don't go his way. Hasn't happened yet, but he's about to play a top player now so let's see how he holds up.
