What is Dexter about?

TV.com said:
Based on Jeff Lindsay's novels Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter this crime thriller follows Dexter Morgan. Dexter is a forensic blood spatter expert for the Miami Dade Police Department. He is the main support for his sister. He has a steady girlfriend, with two kids who adore him. He also has an active "night life". Based on a code instilled in him by his foster father, Harry, he hunts down people who have escaped justice and makes sure they don't get away with a crime again.

Is that supposed to be Keith Carradine in the background? Looks like him but younger and in casual clothes. Not really fitting his role.

Nice. Interested to see if the first 2 eps are any different than their leaked form, which while great, had a few nagging issues, mentioning which I'd probably be called a nit picker.

Go ahead, might as well discuss something until the show arrives

Cannot wait although I live in Canada so I have to have the MN channel to watch it. Does anybody know if they show it on Showcase?

What the hay. These are from my blog, back in July, when the episode first released. I'm high-lighting the bits that I still think are bothersome today and gloss over the bitchings triggered by my chronic toxic shock system. I like to bitch.

SPOILERS AHOY

Two episodes into the highly anticipated second season of Dexter, and some ugliness is rearing its head. I’d like to emphasize that these episodes may be very different when they do officially air in September. Let’s take a quick look at the incidents of bad writing that really kneed my jumblies.

In the first episode, “It’s Alive,” a little girl seeing a crime scene where her brother has been hacked up with a machete makes a sad face while being comforted by her mother. Dexter, seeing this, states something along the lines of, “I know that look,” as the screen momentarily fades out to show us Harry carrying Toddler Dexter out of that bloody shipping crate. That’s silly and manipulative. How could Dexter have known the look on his very own face as he was being carried out of the box? That’s a memory that was repressed up until just a month ago in the show’s timeline. I understand the sentiment, that he knows how that girl must feel, but he used dumb language, and the show used a lame expository device to get the idea across.

(Current explication: Needless, obvious expository devices really grind my gears. Dexter, by the nature of the story, won't be picking up a whole lot of brand new, never seen season one viewers. Therefore, Dexter is really aiming for a teensy tiny insignificant niche of the viewership (tiny enough that it may not even exist) with a piece of exposition that sticks out like a sore thumb. This is really small potatoes, so. . .)

In the second episode “Waiting to Exhale” the Miami Popo are watching a video made by a suspected gang enforcer that is wanted in relation to a murder that occurred a day previous. This tape, offered up by the enforcer and his lawyer, is supposed to prove that the suspect wasn’t at the scene of a shooting. Upon seeing the video is timestamped, the cops quip that anyone can change the time on a camera to suit their own needs. Then the suspect holds up a newspaper in the video. Dexter’s sister, Deb, grabs a copy of the paper from the day before, purportedly when the video was shot and exclaims that yes, the newspaper displayed in the video is from the same day that matches the timestamp. That’s apparently reason enough to release the suspect. They said it was simple to fudge timestamps, but in the World of Dexter it is apparently a logistic impossibility to nab yesterday’s paper from the recycling bin in order to make a video “proving” one’s innocence.

(Current explication: This is just retarded, and I hope the preview episode was just incomplete footage, or something with an editing error or something. What happens in that scene doesn't make sense)

Dexter’s writing has always lagged a bit in comparison to its plotting and concept; this is especially evidenced in the last two episodes of season one. Those episodes, luckily, moved quickly enough and provided enough viewer service and satisfaction that the little holes and questions were negligible in light of the enjoyment the final product delivered. Here, in these first two fairly slow, welcome back episodes, such issues stick out more, and the fact that they are up to four episodes in a row with some sort of sketchy writing has me a little worried.

Also, all the neat little conflicts brewed in the final episode are cleaned up quickly and in generally unsatisfying ways. Rita’s husband dies (off camera, even!) in jail. Doakes apparently just gets bored of following Dexter around after an episode. Dexter convinces his dear Rita that his increasingly weird behavior is a result of drug addiction. I thought these little cliffhangers would be built up into season-long conflicts or themes, but the notable breadcrumbs have already been eaten up. Neatly, but too tersely. There were three nice threads for development wasted right there, and I certainly hope that whatever they’ve abandoned them for can possibly live up to what I’ve been imagining for the past six months.

(Current explication: I stand by these complaints, too. I misrepresent Dexter "convincing" Rita there, but you folks get the point. It's more playing along with than it is convincing. Anyway, I was a bit hasty declaring this complaint, but going by tone, I think they are, aside from the addiction thing, pretty much done with the shaz setup in the mini-cliff hangers. I could be totally wrong, too, of course, and even if I'm right, that doesn't mean that what they have planned isn't awesome or anything. Just disappointed those threads went next to nowhere)

Another couple of things these two episodes, particularly the second one, have me worried about are the continuation of the flashbacks of Harry along with daydreams of Brian (the Ice Truck Killer) popping up to harass Dexter. I think the latter has been dealt with at the end of episode two, but Harry is still up in the air at this point. I’d like to think that all the Harry flashbacks in season one were offering us a sort of primer on Dexter, but at this point, we know all we need to know about the character, and the flashbacks sticking around seems like a holdover, a tradition. Granted, he has only appeared in three segments in these two episodes, but it shows Harry is still on the writers’ minds, even as Dexter makes some of his least Harry’s Law-worthy kills yet. It should also be noted that one of the key take aways from season 1 is that Dexter lost his unwavering trust in Harry, which makes the continued attention these flashbacks get questionable.

(Current explication: I understand the show is probably struggling with identity a bit. They have abandoned the books so they have no real guide rails aside from the past, which features those flashbacks. Those flashbacks, though, served a purpose to the narrative of the first season. They are done. One of the big points of season one, book and show, is that Dexter no longer fully trusts Harry, so keeping the flashbacks around seems more a practice of habit than something that needs to be there. We'll see. The Brian issue, I am confident, is done in episode two. I just thought it was kind of unnecessary when I wrote up my initial impressions. No worry on that point anymore.)

Also, there’s no new music. I certainly hope this is just a result of the episodes being early. Actually, apply that last statement to everything I said in this post.

Current explication: Honestly, aside from that nonsensical scene, this is my biggest complaint.)

Don’t get me wrong, despite it showing some seams, the show’s off to a nice start. Even the first season had a little trouble at first.

I've already seen the leaked episodes, but I'm still gonna watch em again in HD on the 30th.

CAN'T WAIT.

me too.

one thing that bothered me though was that its pretty obviously not filmed in miami anymore.. the hispanic gang members looked mostly mexican.. and the way they dressed (button down shirt, only top button done) is more of a west coast thing.

:/

other than that. its ace.

Im debating whether to start watching on Oct. 14 (since Ive seen the first two episodes), or to jump in on Sept. 30, to see if anything has been altered since July.

I've only seen the first 4 episodes of the first season, but it's already turning out to be one of my favourite current TV shows. I'm very tempted to get the rest of the episodes instead of waiting for them to air here, but I just prefer watching them on the telly instead.

i should also note that i'm not expecting this season to match the first season...partly because the end of the first season departs so greatly from the first book, so the second season doesn't really have any material to work with. but by that logic, that might also mean that this season will be really good, because the end of the first season was awesome.

Yeah, I sort of ridiculously loved Dexter. I watched it many, many times. I actually like the idea of going rogue from the book series, but I'm still suspicious about whether they can pull off something even remotely in the same area of quality.

As long as they leave Rita's ex-husband drama out of this season I'll be happy. The previews that Showtime has been airing really make me excited for the new season to start, I've avoided the leaked episodes.

I really liked Dexter but as I mentioned in the official thread I thought the end of the season was rushed and a bit nonsensical. I also worry that the gimmick of the show might wear thin over the course of a second season without major alterations but I'll be watching.

Awesome start of a season, I wanted to do some minor nitpicking but I see White Man has everything under control. Hats off to you sir.

S1 Dexter was great, I watched the final 6 eps in one straight run and thought the killers indentity was CRUD and the final ep was just poor.

The first 2 eps of S2 were good for the most part, I agree with most of the complaints above, but its a tv show with a 12 ep run, so I understand that there will be some fluff and bad choices. That doesnt mean I accpet them though :), but having several writers and directors, there may be flux.

roll on the end of October!

I've only seen the web preview for the new season and I can't imagine a more awesome setup! What's the second book about, anyway?

Started watching Season 1 about 2 weeks ago. I enjoyed it and got to episode 5. However, it is nowhere NEAR as great as everyone says. I really don't think any actors are that great except Michael C. Hall, who is wonderful. I'd go as far as saying I don't really care about any other character besides him, and some of them really annoy me. I just can't help but compare it to The Wire, and how much better that show is. I don't know. It is better than the majority of TV. I guess it gets better?

What the fuck does this show have to do with The Wire?

Yeah, there are definately a few characters that really annoy me as well.. Hall stands way above the entire cast. I still find it worth watching just for how f'ed up it can be.

I guess the whole cop/detective environment, showing them in/out of the workplace and taking shit from their superiors, investigating murders, etc.

Season 1 was simply 'good' but by no means 'great' unless the rest of your TV watching is total shit.

Really good start so far. The preview makes it look like this season will be more intense, much more is at risk anyway.

I didn't have problems with the writing. I find when I think back to my memories I see myself in them, rather than from my point of view. It's an emotional thing. So I found him knowing the look on his face accurate and well done.

I like the acting of the rest of the cast. There is something very surreal about it and it's too consistent with everyone to just be bad acting, it feels like a stylistic choice. Even Hall has a tinge of it.

Just a heads up for anyone who's been on the fence about watching this show - the first season will be 19.99 at Target next week.

I think the show is great and I actually read the first Dexter book (which basically is the first season). Did anyone here read the second book? Is it as good?

This thread would have been twice as awesome if you'd combined it with Brotherhood season 2. Greatest night of television ever!

Good start.
Dexter really messed up this ep.

Rita and Doakes are on to him.
He let two people go.

Great music as always.

Loved Dex's reaction when he finds out Paul's dead - sort of a smile.
Surprised they actually killed Rita's ex off actually.

Cannot believe they are finding all of Dex's bodies.

Why is it that all these Wire "fans" have to troll all other shows?

"Is The Shield good" topic revolves into "Fuck the Shield, Buy The Wire"

Now it's Dexter sucks in comparison to The Wire.

The Wire is a phenomenal show. One of the best. But there are other phenomenal shows out there and not everything has to be compared to The Wire. Thanks.

Any differences spotted compared to the Screener?

im curious as well. i have the episode on my DVR, but i wont have a chance to see it for a while. so if its the same, im just going to skip it, and move on to the next ones.

i thought this season opener wasn't really that great (because i think it's sort of obvious that people like dexter because he's this fantastic killing machine and also maintains a perfect outside life, so seeing him falling apart isn't that enjoyable)...but the rest of the season might shape up to be awesome, judging from the season preview. doakes is pretty fuckin annoying though, he's too over the top sometimes. also i don't get why anybody is comparing this to the wire, they're completely different, outside of being about police to a certain extent.

I picked up the season 1 dvd from target last week and watched the whole thing in 6 days. What an awesome show. I wish I had showtime so I could see the episodes as they air. Any impressions?

Tonight's episode was one of my favorite in the entire series. This season is really shaping up to be very good. I was worried about them straying from the books, but tonight's episode really gave me new faith in the writer's decisions.

Excellent episode, definitely my favorite one so far. I was at first afraid the pacing was so off but we did
get to see blood at the end
which I wasn't looking for.
