Just watched the episode. That was probably the weakest of the season so far, and it may have had some of the most overt problems in the series so far (the whole showing Dexter's Michael Jackson-look-a-like sponsor the bodies, pointless go nowhere Doakes plot, LaGuerta soap opera shenanigans), but I didn't think it was that terrible. More of a spinning its wheels ep, but not bad.
I would like to do some general bitching though. Keep in mind that most of it isn't about this episode specifically. Some of it isn't even about this season specifically.
First and foremost, my most objective complaint: this season doesn't look as good as last season. Cinematography is lax compared to first season (which I recently rewatched). Maybe this has to do with the move of the production to LA, maybe it has to do with new crew members; I dunno, but it's kind of striking. It looks like a normal TV show now whereas previously it looked like a shining example of the production values you can get on cable.
This applies to the first and second season, in bits and pieces, and I am bringing it up now because it has especially been evident in the last two episodes: Is Dexter really a sociopathic serial killer? In season 1 I chocked this up to it probably being very difficult to write a realistic unemotional psychopath, but as the season went on, I wondered if they intentionally gave Dexter feelings. It's even more obvious now, to the point where I am wondering how intentional it is. Dexter talks about hope and caring, and he has feelings for his girlfriend, Darla, and the kids. He evidently cares seriously about the recovery process for god knows what reason. Anxiety over being caught is cool, but it's like we're getting a bit too much of the full spectrum for me to really buy that duder is a psychopath.
I still don't care about anyone else in the police department despite the show's (usually half-assed) attempts to make them interesting characters. Gimme Dexter, gimme Debra (although she's been boring this season, too).
Young actors with hideous moles all over their faces should be glad that the show requires flashbacks of Dexter at various ages, lest they be standing in the bread lines.
So who do you think is going to discover Dexter's secret first? Michael Jackson or Rita's mom? Lundy?
Overall I am digging this season. It's not as manically paced as the first, but there's time to get it on.
