really loved the season. The actor that plays dexter, is it Michael C Hall? Is great, he was excellent in Six feet under as well.

They still follow the broad outline

Emphasis on broad, in this instance: I'll equate it to the work done by Spielberg and Co. on adapting Jurassic Park to the screen. They are all ostensibly based on Crichton's two novels, but they pick and choose their desired elements based on what they believe to be good filmmaking (Regardless of one's opinion of that viewpoint). It's all the same scenarios, but the stories they tell and the characters they create are entirely different. They're not a slave to the material in the least.

In the case of Dexter, there has been the expansion of various secondary characters and the increased development of certain characters which has sent them in vastly different directions. While they're still following a rather simple template, there is nothing that will keep them from branching outside of that even further the more seasons the show provides. Right now, Showtime is getting a lot of awards mileage out of this series with both Hall and the show getting a lot of raves. The chances of them "playing it safe" by sticking to the books (And likely growing stale as a result) as opposed to opening up new possibilities to keep the show moving forward is extremely slim.

So, in other words, be prepared for the series to be willing to expand its horizons in the future.

I don't particularly think so. At most they are using bits from the book. Season 2 has nothing that significant to do with the books. Season 1 does. The books really aren't so hot. They have chosen wisely.

Anybody know when they are going to begin airing season 3?

I can't wait to watch some new episodes..loved both seasons, I'm reading the first book now and ordered the second one..

A LONG time from now.

Just started watching this show (thank you Writer's Strike) and it is rather interesting.

Only seen the first two episodes, but it really reminds me of American Psycho in a way which is a good thing.

I have no idea on the GAF consensus, but I really enjoyed Season 2 more than Season 1, even though the finale was a bit of a let down for me, personally. The show blew its load in the second-to-last episode, but the last scene for Season 2 was fantastically sadistic.

Based on what I'm hearing about the plot for the second book, I'm not a fan. Pass.

all I know is when Season 2 comes out on DVD I am so buying it day 1. I rented Season 1 from blockbuster on a whim, and DAYAM this show is good. Can't wait to see Season 2...

I just finished marathoning this show (both seasons). Great stuff, though I have to admit to being slightly disappointed by the last two episodes. I'm actually feeling a bit down now that I've finished, since there's no more to watch, for now.

While i'm looking forward to S3, anyone know if they are completely changing direction from the books? I heard about book 3 and well, big lololols to what was introduced in it (supernatural shit and crap).

And it may be even longer due to the writer's strike, unfortunately. We'll be lucky if season 3 shows up this year, but I'm betting it won't be until sometime in 2009.

Based on previous experience with HBO and Showtime, I'd say you're probably right. Won't start seeing the new season until after Christmas.

What's the score with Dexter coming to primetime (I forget which channel). Does that mean repeats or new episodes?
CBS is going to air the first season with a TV-14 rating, so it'll be heavily censored.

I don't know why they would even bother. Thankfully it's just the repeats. I was going to have a nervous breakdown if I were to find out that new episodes would be written around a prime time audience.

In the books LaGuerta was murdered by the Ice Truck Killer and Deb knows that Dexter is a serial killer. They've departed from novels a long time ago....

I don't know if Deb knows he's a serial killer, but she knows he has some skeletons in his closet.

Starting with Season 2, they aren't even following the novels anymore, at least with the first season it followed it fairly closely.

Just finished S2 last night. What a great season.

Sgt. Doakes will be missed. Such a shame he died at the hands of the horsejawed amateur and not Dex himself. :(

Any word on when the next season is scheduled to air?

Just a head's up for people catching the show on CBS tonight, my box is showing it as starting a few minutes before 9:00.

This will be my first time watching season 1. Hopefully it won't be too traumatizing X_x

Rent the DVD instead, I have a feeling this will be like Sex and the City on TBS all over again.

For anyone that is interested, Target has Season 1 for $19.99. I've already seen Season 1 and 2, but I still wanted to own the series. I still might watch the CBS network version tonight out of curiosity. I'm still curious how they are going to handle Doakes' lines. Motherfudger! :lol

Honestly, CBS might be able to pull this off. It seemed like a really bad idea when it was first announced, but 80% of the time, the show isn't that bad. Take Season 2 for example, there really wasn't too much violence overall...either way, this can only work in the show's favor. The Showtime ratings were amazing, so we know we'll get a Season 3 regardless of the CBS performance. The show can only pick up some extra fans that wouldn't have seen it otherwise. :D

Just out of curiosity, whats the possibility of the show being continued only on CBS if this turns out to be successful?

I know it sounds weird, but this has been in the back of my mind.

Oddly enough, my girlfriend and I ended up watching the pilot episode on dvd at the exact same time that CBS showed it. So I missed out on the CBS version. Now that I'm rewatching the show, I've noticed Deb has just as bad of a potty mouth as Doakes. I guess she could start saying "Fudge."

Doakes is one of my favorite side characters of any show in a long time.

Every single time he says something, I follow up it (out loud) with "Fucking Doakes!"

:( :( :( :( :( I miss Doakes!

yea poor Doakes. I really started to hate him as a character since he wouldn't get off Dexter's back and got captured for that but when he died I really felt bad for him. The way he died was just sad. But yea what a great season.

I never thought season 2 would be this good. Looking at most other shows, if season one is good then season two usually means crap. But not with Dexter and hope they keep it like that with season 3.

Got season 1 yesterday............ wow, this show is bad ass, you actual like the characters, this is the first TV series i really actually like........... that isnt a animated. :lol
