DF: Dark Souls 3 Xbox One Frame-Rate Test

What is frame pacing?
Think of it like this.

Let's say, at 60hz, you want 30fps. Each frame must persist for 33ms but, really, you could look at it as a unique frame appearing for 16.7ms followed by a duplicate frame for the same amount of time.

So you'd get...

Frame 112233445566

Each frame persists for exactly the same amount of time. The frames are evenly paced and displayed.

When things go awry you end up with situations like...

112333445666778999

Frames can persist anywhere from 16.7ms to 50ms so even if the average frame-rate is still 30fps, different frames are on screen for variable amounts of time. This results in a very jittery looking game.

What is frame pacing?

Its a simplistic explanation for a symptom with a myriad of potential causes on a multi-processor system.

The symptom is intermittent frame-drops despite an average frame-rate remaining 30fps. Whereas "frame pacing" originally related to synch issues between multiple-GPU's.

I was waiting for this performance test. Time to preorder Quantum Break and I'll wait for patch for Dark Souls 3 if there ever is one before I buy.

What's going on with the frame-pacing issues in nearly every From Software game?
Aren't they capable to fix this issue? Nobody in the studio? Anyone?

Sucks for console players. Luckily for them the art design and gameplay are amazing but to push out bad performance just sets up disappointment, especially when they are churning this shit out.

Yeah, I've noticed a few noticeable frame drops here and there. However, it doesn't make the game in anyway unplayable. Besides, it's version 1.0, I wasn't expecting it to be perfect. Oh and we're playing it Three weeks before it's due out, I'm really happy with it so far.

Currently playing BB and the frame pacing is almost unbearable.
Glad I'll be able to go back to PC with DS3.
The fact that the developer that creates the best gameplay in the biz neglects performance like this is a tragedy.

The framepacing issue is never going to get fixed, most likely the framerate tanks when playing multiplayer.
I wonder if From is actually receptive of their player base because they wouldn't have done it yet again.

From has immunity from technical issues and immunity from criticism that all Souls games are very similar in design...unlike say Ubisoft who would get shat on even if they changed things drastically.

Shit frame rate AND frame pacing problems.

Incredible. What a developer.

Yup but they will still get a pass as usual even though they have asked for forgiveness before because of performance issues. Which was obviously insincere.

I'm just glad I didn't give into temptation and bought it from the JP store.

How is From so consistently crappy on the framerate front? Surely their recent success would have drawn some talented programmers.

Well, I have it pre-ordered on Xbox One. It is what it is and it will not be the first time I have experienced framerate issues in a Souls game. That is for sure, lol.

But it should be working properly at version 1.0, since when did we come to expect our games to be beta's from day one?

Hm, they're selling it in Japanese stores..

Sucks, but I survived Blighttown on the 360 and I'll survive this. I was going to hold out for the PC version, but with the MS loophole, the temptation was too much to resist.

This releases about three days before my "HP deal" computer with the GTX980ti arrives. I would basically be a huge putz to get DS3 on the PS4 over the PC in this case, yes? The thing is, I've only ever played the Souls games on Playstation consoles. How was the PC community for the previous games for those of you who double-dipped? More or less the same, or is cheating pretty rampant?

Haven't been paying super close attention to all the different frame rate tests. So it's confirmed already that the Xbox One version of DS3 runs noticeably worse than Bloodborne?

Because while that game had dips, I didn't have any personal issues with frame rate at all.

I'm expecting PS4 performance to match Bloodborne's.

Regardless, I'm getting the PC version.

From what I've played I'm pretty sure it's worse than Bloodborne. BB had fairly good framerate in most early game areas, the real issue came from frame pacing. Here the framerate is worse (at least in the early game, I beat 2 bosses and got pretty far in the third area) and there are still frame pacing issues.
