DFC Intelligence Analyst: 'PC games have surpassed console games globally'

The PC games market has now surpassed the console gaming sector in terms of revenues, an analyst has claimed.

DFC Intelligence owner David Cole told PCR: "On a global basis PC games have surpassed console games but the new console systems means consoles should show an increase.

"The MOBA games League of Legends and Dota 2 dominate everything else by an order of magnitude in terms of more usage than other products," added Cole. "In the first part of 2014 we saw some signs that may change with the introduction of new titles and some increased play of games outside the MOBA category. But MOBA is dominant. Beyond that it is a nice mix of MMO, strategy and first person shooter.

I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner - and the new consoles will not reverse this trend.
Games designed to work on a huge range of PC's like League of Legends, for the initial cost of absolutely nothing, was pretty much destined to explode all around the world.

I know for a fact the constant stream of sales and more typically console games making it over to PC means I overall spend far more money on PC gaming today than I ever spent on 360 games. It's a good time to be a PC gamer.

Hard to imagine that there was a time where the PC was declared dead by almost every person in the gaming industry just a few years ago - by far my favorite platform

There are more active users of 'Schlongs of Skyrim' than all the console users combined. FACT.

Let that sink in for a moment... because I just made it all up.

MOBA games?

Nothing to see here...

The 3 PC games that people play a lot surpass the console market in revenues.

Of course they have when you include stuff like league and dota and other "games as a service" games.

damn. a hat trick of salt

This.

If PC games generated more revenue on average, that's something I want to hear. Not be bloated by 1 or 2 mega titles.

Of course you would. Console gamers would rather die than let PC get any positive acknowledgement.

From "PC revenue is the highest? Take away the top 3 games!" to using all 6 consoles vs PC as a measurement of why PC sucks.

Take away CoD, Assassins Creed and GTA and consoles aren't looking so good. It's only fair if the top 3 games on PC don't count right?

To be fair, this analysis is a bit misleading because it includes revenue generated by titles that aren't cinematic third person action adventure games.

You could say the same about COD or Open world games.

This news is actually pretty consistent with the Ars Technica study on the most popular Steam games. In other words, most multiplatform game sales are still probably lagging behind consoles. It's just that the few games that are popular on PC happen to be extremely popular.

Dark Souls 2 just sold a lot of copies, I imagine a comparable number to either console.

Oh right it doesn't count to console gaf because the games are f2p.

Again completely missing the point. Steam does not represent the majority of the highest revenue PC games not remotely. F2P mmo's and games like them bring in significant amounts of revenue. LoL isn't that much above many of them, in fact it's below them according to some charts.

So this statement is completely misleading..

There are numerous high revenue pc games

Not really surprised personally. Console is still the place for things like AAA games and American sports titles, but the PC has some pretty massive juggernauts that take in money long after their initial purchase and/or install.

I started playing WoW nine years ago and am still paying for my subscription, just upped it for another few months last week. Same thing with League of Legends. Been playing it for years and I still buy the occasional skin or champion.

I can't think of many games like that on console. I have no doubt there are exceptions, but it's mostly an upfront purchase and that's about it. And think of all money spent collectively on Steam sales. Getting great games for under $10. Plus the thriving indie community. Makes sense in the end.

This is crazy, how can they sell more, there are like 5 PC games at gamestop????

What is this internet thing you speak of?

I think that chart was average spent per user.

There was a list of the top 10 F2P games by revenue a while ago, and LoL "only" came in 2nd or 3rd. Not sure how accurate that was though.

Doesn't count. It's all consoles vs PC. They're like brothers, you can't separate them

until LOL900P xbone sucks. but they are united against PC scum

damn. a hat trick of salt

Not really. I game a lot on PC. I build my own PCs.

It's just obviously a little misleading. The PC market is a lucrative market, it's just that only a few genres really dominate it. That's not to say it isn't worth releasing other games on the platform, they wouldn't do it if it wasn't worth it,

"b-b-but those games don't count! because reasons! so console revenue is still higher if you only count REAL games"
