Diablo 1 vs Diablo 2

All this talk of Diablo made me reinstall my original (D1). Man its been a while! :D
Though I was wondering, should I just go ahead and play it as it is or should I try and get a hold of Hellfire? Would I even be able to find it on sale anywhere? Back in the day I only played it without the expansion so I'm wondering if it even matters? Does it add anything significant enough for me to care?

Hellfire is okay - bought I doubt you'd be able to find it through any sort of legal means at all. At least, I'd be surprised if you could.

That being said, Hellfire is ok. Adds some new things and whatnot, but it's not a Blizzard expansion, it was done by Sierra of all people.

Hellfire added the ability to run, but I don't remember if you could use it in dungeons or only in towns. There were two new dungeons with 4 levels each and three new character classes, but two of them were locked away for some reason and you had to run it from the command line to unlock them or something.

Ah screw it! I'll just stick to the original, besides I'm already a bit of a way in with my warrior. Thanks for the heads up though.

Haha, that's the first thing I noticed to be missing when I booted up D1 earlier today.
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to speed walk my way into hell. :lol

Hellfire only adds the ability to run in town, which is really where you want it. The movement speed is fine, imo, for the dungeons. But when you're just selling items in town is really when you could use the speedrun, though it kind of takes me out of the "moment" to see my guy hyperwalking to Griswald.

If you like Diablo 1 or 2, and you have a PS3, you better buy Demons Souls. The atmosphere and style is very, very similar.

I've been thinking about this game. Just need to borrow a PS3. How is the gameplay compared to D1 and 2? I just dont want to spend hours grinding.

In Diablo2 vanilla very few items gave +1 to all skills so these items were heavily sought after. Silks of the Victor was one and Stones were the other. Since SoV's were ancient armor so took up 2x6 SoJ just kind of became the de-facto currency.

However it really isn't like that anymore. The de-facto currency these days are high runes and crafting gems.

Yeah when I was getting out of the game the currency changed to runes, but when I first stared it was the SoJ standard. Tahnks for the info, mystery solved.

I don't think I EVER found anything higher than a Gul
runeGul.gif
in D2 :/

Does anyone know why or how SoJ's became the currency? Like what's the origin of that? I've always wondered this.

Mainly because gold was completely worthless due to bots and people playing the game literally 20+ hours a day. You would have people join random games and just dump tons of gold on the ground for everyone to have.

SoJ was one of the few items that was useful to every class, so while there were more rare items, it was easy to use them in trades since so many people wanted them.

I definitely disagree with you about the article but Diablo 1 definitely has better atmosphere but not gameplay it's still an alright game but has been bested in almost every way by Diablo 2 including soundtrack but it all is just difference of opinion.

I also think that it's also some nostalgia regarding Diablo 1 now.

To tell you the truth despite putting thousands of hours into Diablo 2 the only areas I'm familiar with are:

-Tristram
-The Pit
-Mephisto's Lair
-The Council
-The Arcade Sanctuary/Tombs
-The Bloody Hills
-Baal's Minions
-Cow Level

Yes I know I'm ignoring/skipping entire sections of the game but none of those areas are "profitable". Aside from the few quests that hand out skill/stat bonuses there's no reason to fool around in there, best to just rush through all that and get to Baal's Minions for leveling.

I still don't know why I did it in the first place. Maybe I was just addicted to seeing greens and golds.

Oh I wish it was true! Just think of the possibilities! Undead Pac-man, Princess Peach succubuseses. *drool*

I played a ton of Diablo 1, but D2 never clicked with me. Probably cause D1 was so unique for its time period. By the time D2 came out I was into tons of online games and it wasn't as fresh to me.

i wanna use that monitor res mod, but I want to play battlenet (for the unique drops) are there any mods that mimic LIKE your playing on closed bnet? but only single player?

The one thing that I want them to change about Diablo 3 - one thing - is the music. At the moment it doesn't have any of the guitar of the previous two, it's all ambient, industrial sounding stuff.

I would like to see Gold having a trade value in D3.
It's really hard to work your equip up in trading, because no one will trade an item for a slightly better/rare item. And to do MF runs, you basically had to have the best items available in the game. If gold has a lot of value (like in MMORPGs), you could possibly buy good items and the game will feel more rewarding of your hard work.

so i have to search my cupboards every time for the CD key (i've bought the game 3 times in total, couldn't turn down that battle chest!)

You know you could put the Diablo 2 CD key into your Battle.net internet account and download either the Mac/PC iso whenever you want after that, right?

Also: Diablo 2 is fun gameplay wise. Online wise the economy is pretty much ruined with duped runes nows. And it's aged horrible in the ten years it's been out.

Late game items sold for insane amounts of gold, and it was worthless for anything except repairing and gambling.

SoJs are small (1x1), useful for every character class, and one of the more difficult items to find so therefore valuable. Really rare runes also became currency.

Ya, it's unfortunate that Blizzard hasn't done more to stop duping and hackers in all their games. Currently, Battle.net for Broodwar and Diablo II is full of hackers ruining the game. They still semi-support Warcraft 3 by banning a large group of hackers recently, but it's still not really enough.

I really hope their Battle.net2 anti-hack efforts are much more aggressive so Starcraft II and Diablo III don't become horribly infested with hackers after a few years.

Not to mention that RAMPANT bot usage. My brother runs bots on b.net and it makes me want to puke. Lazy motherfucker, go farm for your shit...not use EZMODE.

I did UberTristam with duped items
. But yeah, it's bullshit for "items" just to get good ones to find out they're duped with rust-storm.

The only thing I want duped is the quest items (for UberTristam) since getting those to get the reward for your class is a crapshoot and a bitch and a half to get legitly. I'd rather it be an easier quest finding thing. Like UberD (UberD is now hard to find since you have to get on irc and hope someone is selling duped SoJ to spawn him and hope you get into a lucky game to kill him).

I did get UberD to spawn for me and got his reward and the UberTristam reward last ladder (but the 1.12 patch hit) it was a pretty awesome feeling for me. :D

I really want to get into this franchise soon. I've played D2 a couple of times on my old PC but never got into it. Now, seeing how awesome D3 looks, and how I could really use an amazing RPG to waste time, Im thinking of buying the Diablo BattleChest (as it would look nicely alongside my SC BC) and going through all of them in order.

Any advice for a newcomer? If Im not mistaken D1 is SP and D2 should be played with friends co-op, right?

I think Diablo is better co-op as well.. there's no reason to leave the multiplayer experience only in D2. Diablo over LAN is awesome...

It's the music in Diablo 1 that really did it for me. So incredibly atmospheric.

D2 has a good score too but nothing touches the original.

I enjoyed Diablo much more than Diablo 2 and probably spent more time playing the Diablo demo than I spent playing Diablo 2.

I think it was just the thrill of getting a real graphics interface on top of the roguelike gameplay I had always enjoyed. The thrill was gone by the time D2 came out.

Seems to run fine on my laptop, whit a slight stuttering ever now and then.

D 2 for me, I couldn´t get into D1 after playing D2. No running is painful :lol Sadly I could almost never play online, because we had not flat-rate.

I never could get beyond the dungeons of Andariel´s castle on hell with my paladin, damn immune to physical damage ghosts D: But he slaughtered everything on Nightmare. He got deleted at level 74 or so, when the family pc was formated, nobody told me they´d do it D: Even though I had a 1.08 Arcane´s Valor I never even could try because of my low level ;_;

I started to play again with my first ever Amazon, how do you do the enemies 8x more powerful, but 8x more experience thing? I always forget that.

I gotta ask, i couldn't get into D2 because i tried it 2 months ago and it was too dated, and i don't have the nostalgia glasses or anything.

Did anyone here play Mythos? And if so how similar is that to Diablo? I want an idea of what the game is actually like because i'm really, REAALLY tempted for D3.

What really sucks is I have my LoD key just fine, but my cousin borrowed my copy of Diablo II years ago and broke the case, which I've lost over the years (and therefore the key). So I'm agitated, I was really excited to register my game, but also sad they do not offer Diablo for registration (as it has no key).

And it was the Diablo II Collector's Edition of all things!

Could you get the key out of the registry entry?

Mythos was pure fun for a week for me. But in the end the game was just a beta (I'd call it more like an alpha) and due to the poor quests, bugs, reptetitive environments, and lack of real storyline I quit shortly after. The gameplay, graphics, loot system, skill system, and all that were awesome though. Diablo III obviously won't have the problems Mythos had, being a polished gem like all Blizzard products. This is why it's my #1 anticipated game right now.

Btw, if you're looking for some Diablo-style action with updated graphics and haven't already played this, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "Titan Quest" and the expansion "Titan Quest: Immortal Throne." This game is mountains of fun for a singleplayer run-through. This game's true downfall was its lack of a secure server-based multiplayer component. Had it had that I'm fairly certain the company wouldn't have folded and the hype for this game would have grown huge. But that doesn't stop it from being an awesome game for a solo play or two.

Diablo 1 vs. Diablo 2 is like Terminator 1 vs. Terminator 2. Terminator 1 was the original, low-budget action-exploitation movie that put Ah-nuld on the map. Terminator 2 was the big-budget glossy action-vehicle that made Ah-nuld the future Governor of California. See the difference? Diablo 1 and 2 are the same way, direct comparisons are kind of pointless.

Yes. It's for real. Sign up at Battle.net, input CD keys for WoW/Diablo 2, LoD/Starcraft, Broodwar/Warcraft 3 (Diablo 1/Warcraft 2 is NOT supported) and they'll match the CD key to your account and let you download the iso for Mac/PC whenever/wherever.

That's nice, but I really don't wan to have to buy Diablo II again for the feature, but it sounded awesome.

Well, if you find one of your three CD keys you don't ever have to find another CD/CD-key for the game again. Which is what I'm getting at. :lol

Yeah god knows how many times I've bought Diablo and Diablo II. I have two copies of LoD and original Diablo just here in this weird looking sack.

Edit: found another copy of Diablo II, in a case, but obviously not its original case, thusly, 2 copies and counting and no cd key. I quit for today or this week to this month. I was just about to dive back in the game.

Well... IIRC you can buy another CD-key from Blizzard themselves. I dunno about the price, but if you can't find your keys and really are jonesing bad to get back into Diablo 2... it's an option.

i liked the diablo 1 expansion and even beat that all the way thru. the new dungeons were neat and it was challenging. Plus the search spell was the best addition =)

Wanna hear something sad.

Even though I don't play the game anymore I still go to Diabloii.net ever once in a while to look at items and things. Probably the most pathetic thing I do.

Oh yea? Well I have read the story in the Diablo 1 manual more times than I'd like to admit.

Not sure which one is worse...

Ah man. I loved that manual, but in my youthful stupidity, I took some scissors to it and stuck some of its awesome art to the wall of my old bedroom.

Oh how I regret doing that.
