Diablo 1 vs Diablo 2

I guess atmosphere is more important to me than gameplay because I think Diablo 1 is the better game.

And I just happen to have played D1 and D2 back to back (played through D1 with my brother, and we are now in D2 - act5)

but then I never had fun doing the "high level stuff", like mephi/baal/cow runs, grinding to level 99, etc etc. I only enjoyed playing through the games with a friend, without rushing or anything. I guess if that's your cup of tea, D2 wins by a mile because it just wasn't possible in D1 (or at least I wasn't aware of it)

Because of this thread I installed the original Diablo because I never beat it. Sadly I became disenchanted when I noticed it had fewer slots for equipment thus less loot whoring possibilities. I realized that is the main reason why I play these games so it stopped me from a playthrough :(

But the less slots the more special an item feels Stoney. I find it hard in some games to be impressed with all the shit I have cause I can barely keep track of it all.

Kind of off topic but:

Will Diablo 3 have the same "click to attack" style gameplay that 1 & 2 did? The only reason I stopped playing Diablo was that I didn't want to break my mouse from clicking it so much. :lol

Seriously though, I'm worried.

Lovely comparison between the two (and some starcraft thrown in) at The Action Button Dot Net. (link)
Came in here to post this. Diablo 1 all the way, because 2 is a soulsucking vampire dressed up as something playable.

Yes, they're the same.

That's why you buy a couple of throw away mice for diablo/starcraft purposes.

For me the appeal of these games is the stacking of all the loot and all the potential combos. If I could I would add toe rings. Your body is just an excuse to hang as much crap on it as possible in loot games for me.

And the more often I run across a new item to replace an existing item the more I feel rewarded.

That's not to say I wouldn't have enjoyed the original. I almost certainly would. I was just turned off by the idea of having less rewards than I did in Diablo 2.

If Diablo 1 had running in it...I would have picked that one. I dug the skill set of the Rogue and Wizard more than the Amazon & Sorceress (though they did kick ass in D2 it just felt a lot...easier?).

But Diablo 2, it was a faster paced game and I could run through it countless times. I only played through Diablo a handful of times in comparison. Though still more than most other games.

Diablo 1 started mailing it in after the first couple of bosses/quests. It's almost as if they went, fuck we still have how many levels left? Screw it, let's just make the bosses reskinned versions of other monsters and the and the quests are to kill them.

Some guys here have issues.
And actionbutton... as far too often, he is way wrapped up in his ego.

Okay, D2 took a different direction. Yeah, Act 3 wasn't really hot with the pygmies. But that kind of reaction, "...it took Unreal Tournament from me...", I'm sorry, but please play what you want, not what you feel you have to because it's new or has the most players.

Can also happen when you are older. :-P

Diablo had better quests, and was way cooler and demonic. I remember reading those massive tomes about all kinds of stuff about the war between heaven and hell. Taking about blood of virgins and demons. It just had a freaky and endless "there is no escape" feeling which really just left you to go deeper and deeper. A sudden change of scenery. You are no longer fighting the Butcher and his gore drenched chambers, but deep underground. Edging towards the burning infernos. Demons watch, they follow and consume you. Bodies impaled on poles. Ancient armor from a fallen hero. Diablo is waiting. You can only go. DOWN.

But Necromancers are totally kick ass. More dungeon crawling in D3 please.

Its hard to take actionbutton's essay seriously when the author starts the piece by demonstrating that he has no idea about tactics, tennis, or fighting.

Diablo 2.

Diablo has a charm and atmosphere that's totally individual and doesn't feel replaced or topped by Diablo 2, and that's what makes it (for me) a classic. However, Diablo 2 builds on the gameplay of the first and improves it (in my opinion) in every sigle way possible.

It's bigger and better.

D2 for sure.

I'm surprised that the interface isn't dated at all, even for a 9 year old game. Going back to D1 is frankly frustrating for me.

I played D1 more than D2 back in the days (modem with friend and B.net).

D2 is somewhat better, but D1 was just something really new at a time where all we had were FPS (Duke3D, Blood, Doom) and RTS (Warcraft 1-2, C&C) games.

Old post, I know.

Anyway, isn't Diablo 3 going with some kind of a WoW skill setup? You know, how you configure an action bar at the bottom of the screen and simply press the corresponding keyboard button when you want to use the skill? So you'll still be clicking a lot, but with the keyboard instead?

Or is the skill bar at the bottom of D3 just an easier way to visualize your hotkeyed skills (rather than having to look through a submenu as in D2) and you'll still be clicking the mouse 972469726397 times per minute?
