Diablo 3 PS3/4 - Console exclusive dodge mechanic!

But the entire point of Diablo is that it is a loot-athon collection, isn't it?

Not really, it's the dungeon crawling which has strong ties to collecting loot. Building your character around uniques in diablo 2 was a huge part of the fun but diablo III gives you that option with the ability selector.

Basically though you can still do your loot collection but blizzard seems to hint that it is not meant to take as long as it does on the PC version.

I dont know I hate defending blizzard and diablo III, but I don't think these are the proper faults to attack.

The core problem of diablo III was always the stat system, it's too rigid and very unfun. Most of the great diablo 2 items had crazy cool stats like a chance to teleport you away when you get hit, or grants you additional levels to a certain skill.

Legendaries offer that flexibility to some degree but it will never reach diablo 2 levels, the most you can do now is get an azure wrath on a witch doctor and use rain of toads to perma freeze stuff.

The reason diablo gets called a loot-athon is because of how fun the items were in D2. But in D3 this isn't an accurate description at all. It's more like a shump with RPG elements.

Blizzard would have to patch in a new UI, tweak the gameplay for the controller, play test it, etc. There is very little ROI for them on that when they can tell people just to buy the console version.

That is straight up BS! It wouldn't take an extensive amount of work to implement it. That is just poor game support.

Lame! Too bad Blizzard once again chooses to screw over its customers. To think I bought this deal too.

Future IGN article: What can Diablo III (PC) learn from Diablo III (PS4)

I think I'm finally in for this when I get a PS4 some time next year. The fact that it can be played offline was enough to sell me on it, but I wasn't sure between PS3 or PS4. Seeing the chopping framerate from the (probably) PS3 version has sealed the deal on PS4.

Interesting that they went for left stick controlling movement+facing and added a God of War style analog dodge. I was thinking they might go twin stick style, with movement on the left stick, facing on the right, and main attacks on the shoulder buttons.

That would've been the smart and fun way to do it.

Instead we get jank.

Ps4 will finally bring it to Vita too! Unfortunately that only means in my bed and on the shitter and not on a plane or bus :(

Could not withstand the Apple style bullshit white background PR talk, so thanks for the timestamp.
Also does D3 count as a PS3/PS4 exclusive in list wars or does it not count because it's on the PC?

This video embarasses me. The way they talk about controlers feels so... 1998.

Good bye Blizzard, you used to be cool but after DIII, I doubt i will ever take them seriously again.

How do you place AoE spells with a controller? Or for that matter, select an enemy you want to shoot/attack with a spell directly. (I'm honestly curious)

Obviously auto target within a specific distance, or some form of select to go through enemies. Maybe some spells can be targets with the stick but i doubt it.

So how do you aim where certain abilities of the Witch Doctor land without a mouse? Also, didn't get filled with hope for the PS3 version when the guy talked about the PS4 having a better resolution and framerate, meanwhile the video in the background continues to play choppily.

Precise aim is PC exclusive.

Video is absolutely hilarious. The music and D3 praise is so ridiculous considering how shitty the game is.

That's what I was afraid of. Precise aim is a huge necessity if you're playing as a Wizard/Witch Doctor. Unless you're playing a CM Wizard and all you have to do is spam shit.

dat screen flickering. The framerate looks bad too. I've put over 700 hours in D3 and I can't even imagine playing it with a controller. KB & Mouse all the way. Might get it down the road...

No way to separate the direction of the dodge from the way your character is moving/facing on PC.

You can just make them dodge toward the cursor. I believe some games do have mechanics like that.

Though dodge is unnecessary. You can move and get out in a lot of different ways. Using skills like leap, teleport, vault, or spirit walk to get out of situations or kite was very common when inferno was really hard in the beginning. Even using stuff like i frames on some moves with the monk to dodge an attack can be done. Though the game is now more about killing everything while maintaining speed to farm, which is why a lot of people sprint around and whirlwind through mobs without skipping a beat, so dodge would be really unnecessary.

I agree that dodge is unnecessary, but wouldn't dodging toward the cursor even be an awkward motion? You'd have to stop moving, whip the mouse in a new direction, then hit a dodge hotkey to use it...

not really, usually your cursor is already where you want to go. And dodge in a different directions isn't too hard because a lot of people already are used to stutter stepping if they are used to kiting and it's a skill used in other games like LoL. If you needed to dodge in a totally different direction and kite at the same time, people already have done this using skills like vault and teleport, back when a lot of people used kiting builds and you can be melted fast. It's really easy once you try it.

Holy crap at the number of entitled PC players in the comments section. Of all the things going on in the industry to rage over, Diablo 3 on consoles is not one of them. It looks like it'll be a great port - Blizzard is obviously putting a lot of effort into getting it right.

Are they just mad that the console version will have offline play and no RMAH? I can understand being annoyed at that, completely. But some of the shear venom being spewed towards Blizzard over it is bordering on psychotic.

They're mad cause the features that the PC community have been asking for are coming to a seemingly console exclusive version of the game. It's a slap in the face.

Your mouse is always moving in Diablo, and your character is always moving. Some characters already have straight up dodge moves (like the demon hunter) and there is nothing awkward or unintuitive about it. The right stick dodge is actually way more awkward, you have to take your fingers off the face buttons to use it. It would be much better if it was just a button on the shoulders you pressed and you dodged in the direction you are currently going with the left stick. When I played the pax east demo I thought the right stick was really inappropriate for it, you really want to have all options available to you at all times with Diablo. You should never have to touch the right stick in Diablo 3.

Do not want. Bunch of auto aim and dodge keys? Nah, they can keep that. And lord knows it will be a mess when the PC version is getting major patches and expansion while console version gets slapped with a "Coming Soon".

Nah.

Not really

What? You are crazy. Diablo is nearly 100% about the loot. I really don't know how you could say it really isn't.... The fact that they got itemization wrong is the games biggest problem. You can complete the story mode in no time. After that its pretty much all about loot chasing and leveling.

Welcome to every Diablo 3 thread ever since May 2012.

Why add dodging to one version of the game, but not the other? Isn't that just asking for balance issues?
The statement I last read is that there will be a common PC version which will act as the basis for the console version, and the console version will have its own unique aspects added to it throughout development from that point.

As it stands, dodging would be rather useless in PC D3; as previously stated in this thread, there are several skills which basically give that functionality, and the most effective way to play the game is to face tank everything regardless. There are no viable long-range / kite builds currently in D3, at least in comparison to melee range builds.

I have my doubts that they'd alter console D3 to such an extent that a dodge function will actually be viable.

That is lame! Why the hell not?

They spent so much of the lead up to the *PC* version mouthing off about how they had full Gamepad support going on the PC version and it felt so "natural" and was a great way to play through the game.

Then they tell us we're never getting Gamepad support for PC even though they had it working a year before release and wouldn't stop talking about how perfect it is.

BUT if you *really* want gamepad support, you can buy the console version of the game, which is basically the exact same thing, but now there's controllers!

Diablo 3 Console: The world's first $60 controller support patch.

I like D2 with all its flaws, skipped D3 because the friends I play Diablo with stop gaming. Wasn't a fan of DRM either. Now, I'm contemplating if I should give this a shot. If I do, it's probably after a couple of price drops.

Funny story, I was play Diablo 3 starter edition today and just unlocked that skill for Demon Hunter. Seems to work well enough, but adding it to every class seems a little weird.

That skill for the Hunter uses mana (or whatever its called for the Hunter). I wonder how they're going to handle that in the console version. Why have a skill that uses up your mana if you can just use the right stick at no cost.

I don't know what video you were watching, but the one in the OP was silky smooth and looked great. You're fucking nuts, dude.

I'll be there day 1 on PS4. I'm all over it. I hope the Vita lets me play it on the go, remotely. That'd be mindblowing.

Diablo 3 has always been fun to play to be honest. The gameplay has always felt really polished and spot on, D3's problems arise from mismanagement and misguidance from the dev team. I always lose interest quickly when I play diablo 3, I planned to play it this weekend with a friend for the first time in nearly 6 months and make hardcore characters for fun, because the core game is fun.

The problem is as soon as you get to the item collectathon part of the game at the end to keep pushing up MP levels, items don't drop so you have to sell the least shitty drops for spare change till you can eventually afford that big shiny skorn that isn't really an upgrade damage wise but has life on hit while yours does not.

I really think that diablo 3 couch co-op with friends and items that dont suck dick dropping more frequently will make for a much more rounded experience.

Also release inferno difficulty was stupid.
Same with hotfixes every 2 days during release.

God this game has an awful history.

Completely spot on. The core of the game is fantastic. It's the mismanagement on the dev team's part that really fucked this game up. I also think the expectations were so high it wouldn't have mattered if they have away free blow jobs with purchase, GAF would still hate it.

I actually still play D3, it gets old with people constantly spewing hate about it because there are people playing it consistently having a good time, and it is getting better post launch support than the vast majority of games.

Then to make it worse is all the "I played 100 hours and it fucking SUCKS". As if you aren't interested for 10,000 hours it's just terrible, people expected D3 to be the messiah that would unite all religions of the world I guess. The loot isn't even bad anymore either, when you find a good piece it's incredible.
