DICE: PC Battlefield 3 Getting "Special Effort"

I don't know why they feel the need to reassure PC gamers. We're going to buy it anyway and it's going to be good even if it ends up not being what it should have.

I wouldn't know, I put more hours into Desert Combat than BF2.

If it is another BC2 i definitely wont buy it at full price, for what it's worth.

I just realized, out first look at this game at GDC is this month isnt it?
I still remember the BF2 thread on here. It was fucking crazy, people were jumping over themselves in posting screenshots.

I remember playing on Savage: Battle for Newerth on huge real time 128-player battles. Shit was so insane and awesome!

Would love to see 128 player FPS after all this time.

Bots are pretty useless and not many developers have time to build a competent AI with pathfinding to be actually fun to play against in MP-maps.

And atleast i support unlocking of guns, its fun and gives some more goals while you learn the game.

Bots are never useless. They provide easy or hard cannon fodder to allow people to learn the maps or play low stress games without worrying about assholes yelling at them for being newbies. The bots in BF1942 weren't all that bright, but that never made it any less fun to wade through them. (unless they kept taking the vehicles and wouldn't give them up)

Which is so weird because aircraft in Desert Combat was really good (and had decent balance). It was shocking to see such a massive step backwards even though Chaos Studios were heavily involved in BF2.

Same here. Many more hours. And it completely ruined BF2 for me. It was an inferior game in every regard (although squads, commander, spotting system were good additions). And had that completely asinine unlock system as the cherry on top.

And they let you actually learn to fly vehicles. WTF at omitting this. Somebody needs a bitch slap over there.

I think a tutorial would suffice for this, i don't see enough people picking this up to play with bots to justify making it.

While I would prefer the bots (because I like a little mindless slaughter myself), I would accept this. Give a free fly mode. But something has to be there. I was never great with vehicles in the old games, but I was serviceable. I can't even touch the helis in BC 2 because it's instant crash.

Just like the PC version of 1943.

You know, I wonder if this is where that will finally end up, like the Vietnam expansion in BFBC2. If they retooled it for BF3, added a few of the European maps, and sold it as a $20 add-on, I'd be down with that.

I'm envisioning a goal orientated set of challenges. Take off and fly to x area within a set time, bomb this target as accurately as possible, pick up these passengers without crashing etc.

Would have been super helpful for Battlefield 2 in particular.

Considering how poor DICE have always been with balance I could do without jets, though I wouldn't be completely against them returning. As for prone, after having to suffer through the nonsense in BF2 I don't care if it's not added.

BF2142 fixed the dolphin diving problem by just adding a small accuracy penalty for a few second after going prone

No paid DLC ftw... most important since it split the userbase... (ala Warhawk)

I did play BF2 for 3 years while admittedly I've only been playing BC2 for a few days. Outside of things like commanders, conquest mode really isn't much different in BC2 than it was in BF2. Tanks, jeeps, helicopters, boats, class system, squads, spotting. Maps are smaller sure, but its a 32 player game.

Jets are fine and they are a big part of thew BF experience. They just need to be balanced better.

It's not just that, most of the maps are too straight. If you're losing one fight it's way too hard to go find another one because there aren't any. There are also ridiculous choke points.

It's not the maps being smaller that makes the difference, it is the general openness and amount of options that is missing. In BC2 you typically only have a few entry points that lead to progress, whilst in BF2 you can attack from pretty much any angle. A bigger map also makes landing a few guys behind enemy lines via a helicopter actually matter because there is a much larger penalty for death etc. Stakes are higher, strategy plays a bigger role and it is much less schizophrenic.

On paper they look similar, but in practice BC2 is almost closer to Modern Warfare than it is to BF2.

Treyarch on Call of Duty Black Ops:

We are a PC developer. IÂ’ve been running a dedicated PC team since the beginning of this project. We had one last project. We are making a true PC title here and I think itÂ’s a really important platform for our studio, and IÂ’m also really thrilled that we can support the PC community as much as we can.

One look at the BLOPS PC forums disagrees.....

I have a lot more confidence in DICE than Treyarch but it's more I'll believe it when I see it type thing.
Blops actually does play like a PC game on PC. It doesn't feel like a console port. There are very few multiplatform FPS games that feel like that, and BC2 isn't really one of them. BC2 does have more PC specific features perhaps, but the controls don't feel good on PC. And that's central to the entire experience.

I think the CoD PC gamers want the ability to mod the game and have more control over the experience, but the core game doesn't feel like a port.

lol?

The controls and feel aren't really far divorced from CoD2, which was chiefly a PC game. I mean, the server browser isn't up to snuff, but janky server browsers isn't something atypical in PC gaming. :lol

edit: What it comes down to is that BF3 mainly needs these things to feel like a PC game.

- The ability to run in more than one direction
- Prone
- Lean

I think you're absolutely right with this statement. I only hope DICE decide to build on the things that made BF2 great instead of going down the MW or BC route.

Cod2 was rubbish on the PC, epitome of consolified, turned me off the entire series >_>
Relative to BC2, CoD2 feels like a PC exclusive. I don't really see how it was consolified. They increased the speed and responsiveness of the game and created that distinctive Call of Duty feel with it, but it didn't feel consolified. It just felt dumber.

Jup - and it never changed again.

Won't be satisfied until it's able to be modded to have large scale naval engagements. A battleship with player positions for forward main guns, aft main guns, secondaries on both sides, and AA guns... Or heck, somebody needs to make Battlefield 3 Pirates.

I hope Dice releases some sort of Frostbite SDK for the mod community. That'd show they're serious about the PC side.

It feels that way because all cod's are based on ID Tech 3. The last two cod games have been really neglected on pc.

I just remember COD2 putting me off the entire series for everrrrrrrr, and it had to do with PC port issues... I forget exactly what they were >.< too long ago!

I understand that criticism, but I am of the mind that the destructible buildings in BC2 were made to compensate for its smaller design philosophy - to provide what is essentially a dynamic play environment whose geometry and tactical opportunities vary as time goes on.

"OMG RANDOM DAMAGE WTF" etc. I doubt it. Ported BC1 would probably still have kept the absolutely pants on head stupid "hold to run" button.

For the love of God and all things Holy in the world, DO NOT have a singleplayer mode for this game. Battlefield has established itself as one of the premier multiplayer shooters out there and any singleplayer/story mode, only seeks to take away focus/resources from the awesome multiplayer mode. Seriously DICE, nobody cares about your shitty singleplayer mode, so don't include it. Use that limited disc space for more MP maps.

DICE pulling a Modern Warfare 2 confirmed. The special features will be taking out the lean and removing dedicated servers in favor of player hosting. I am excited.

Why it's from the Desert Combat Mod Team, and Frontlines(Same game that had 50 players on consoles and big ass maps).

BF3, I'm not liking the sound of it as of now. The fact they have to give a "Special" effort for the PC port. Instead of just saying PC comes forth with no compromises, then we water down whatever we need to port it to consoles. It's not just Mod kits or a bigger rez. It's about the game being designed for a system in the year 2010-2011. Not 2005, limited HDD space, and far lower bandwidth specs.

You make it sound like Mirror's Edge was offensively bad. :lol :lol

One thing I want from Black Ops is the amazing feature where all games are saved so you can make awesome clips from them.

Mirror's Edge isn't Battlefield. They can continue to use that franchise as their singleplayer focus but keep that shit out of Battlefield. The Storymode in Bad Company is so atrocious and such an insult to the Battlefield Franchise.

ehh? renderaheadlimit set too high? Mouse acceleration enabled? Frame rate too low? Nothing wrong with the responsiveness with the controls here, and I frequently go from playing bc2 to cod4/blops.
