Did anyone enjoy Kingdom Hearts? I mean, really?

Even if you loved it, you agree that the story is horrible and the voice acting worse, right? And that the pointless collecting ruins any chance of good pacing?
I just can't believe there are people out there (a friend of mine) who prefers this to Wind Waker. Boggles my mind.

No, I disagree; the story was fantastic. Although, I did have lowered expectations, since it's, well, Disney and all.

Bell going off = me finally playing KH

"OH NO! I DISAGREE WITH HIM ON A GAME! HIS OPINION SHOULD BE LIMITED!"

yes KH sold like mad but no one enjoyed because you can't see anything good in it. Yet you still tout TWW as the holy grail when its a flawed derivitive Zelda.

That's moronic, and already limited.

Folks bought Enter The Matrix en masse, too. Certain licenses can reel suckers in like nobody's business, and this thread is proof.

Enter the Matrix was unplayable. KH just has a shit camera. But I see your point.

Yes, except the difference is that people in general didn't regret buying Kingdom Hearts.

Perhaps if I started this thread on the Matrix forums instead of this intarweb collection of mincing nostalgic femmes, I'd get a very SIMILAR response about Enter The Matrix.

The game kept selling well, on GBA too. The interest is diffinately still there.

Chances are Path of Neo won't sell as good as Enter the Matrix because of what people got with that game -- even though PoN looks better.

Because if you made a thread like this for Enter the Matrix, no one would say "Yes, I did!"

Very very few would. Whereas KH was a bit of a phenom - even if it was just with otaku crazies. It still spawned a great deal of fandom.

EDIT: Drinky, I have to say that at least in my case, i enjoyed in in spite of the FF/Disney connection. I actually was prepared for sappy and mundane, and i really do believe I got epic and (slightly) moving.

Continue to shit on the Disney lovers but don't include me.

Just to be clear my post was on Kingdom Hearts sales, heck it sold more than FFX in the states, but yeah Path of Neo looks to take a big stumble even if it was the game Enter the Matrix should have been.

As long as you approach it as a platformer and not an RPG it's pretty good. Great production values, great music, passable story... well, it's not the second coming, but at least it has Pooh.

It's about as much an RPG as RayMan.... so approach it as a platformer and you'll be fine. It's a lot of fun to play... I don't regret the purchase, and I hate ATB combat and think of Fallout 2 the last True RPG. So, make of that what you will =)

Platformer?! The platforming in KH was deplorable. Quite frankly, that is the last thing that comes to mind when I try to describe KH.

I liked the game but the level design was awful. The story was barely passable and most of the characters are just there for a cameo. Combat was fun but the camera could've been better even if I could deal with it.

Guys, there is no point in arguing with olimario. Whatever he says is the absolute undeniable truth. Remember, he is never wrong; he wouldn't be olimario if he was. Our opinions mean nothing. Even so, I still think Kingdom Hearts rocks...that is in my warped reality it does.

The game has its flaws, but I definitely enjoyed playing it 3.5 years ago.

And man darkx10, do you copy and paste the same reply over and over or what?
No, but the hate burns so strongly within me that I can't help but repeat myself.

See, this was back when I thought Kitsune was legit. He had recommended a number of games with very high praise, and generally, he was right. Heck, he was the one that suggested I try out Tomato Adventure...and that was a fun little game with some great reading practice. However, Kingdom Hearts failed on every level. Even if you ignore the awful design of the product, there was this strange, low level feeling I got from the game (the atmosphere perhaps) that actually pissed me off. I think it was the jungle area that really convinced me to hate the game.

I just can't fathom why they made some of the choices they did and I truly can't understand why anyone would like this game. I mean, when I insult stuff like Mario Kart and whatnot, I can at least see that there is a good game there and understand why people can enjoy it (though not how it could be GOTY)...but this, this is just...a really bad game.

I really liked the game, but I can see why others wouldn't (for the reasons stated). However, I always wonder why Secret of Mana gets so much love and this so much hate even though this is a direct descendant of it. I understand it's in 3D and the camera isn't perfect, but to me anyone who likes Secret of Mana would like this (unless you have a vendetta against Disney and anime)

Well, I like Secret of Mana and Kingdom Hearts is a pile of shit. So there you go. No vendettas here, Square just doesn't know how to make ARPGs anymore, and they have been quite anxious to prove this over the past few years.

I couldn't stand this game. I like Square, hate Disney, but this game... was a broken mess with its horrible camera, extremely droll hack and slash gameplay, shoddy platforming. It just wasn't any fun to play, the level design didn't feel cohesive at all (just wander back and forth through closet-sized rooms, and the angsty anime style storyline has been done to death at this point. I loved TOS though...

I loved the battle system and had zero problems with the camera.

Story was shit, though, and fuck the gummi ship.

On a related note, anyone else just baffled by the sales of this game. It honestly seems to have sold greater than the sum of its parts. Disney has never really been a powerhouse property in the games market. Square and Final Fantasy are pretty popular but KH thus far has outsold even FFX. The reviews were generally positive but not overwhelmingly so. What gives?

I don't have to read all 180 replies to know that oli is a fagot and I'm ashamed to live in the same urban area as he.

I liked Kingdom Hearts a lot except for the gummi ship parts which are pretty much universally hated. At least they aren't difficult.

Also =W= has a neat avatar.

I liked the game as a whole, but hated certain parts of it. I could never do the Gummi Ship stuff properly and the battle with Ursala was fustrating.

So what happened to that guy again. He was pretending to be Japanese or something? (not to derail topic)

yes he was pretending to be living in Japan but a mod did a ip check and found out that he was actually in New York! :lol

Then he went all batshit crazy and left the forum never to be heard from again...

I think the style of game is probably easier to pick up than a turn based RPG. Plus the Diseny character worked better in a game like KH. I don't think a FF game with Disney character would sell as well.

Keep the story straight! He was actually at UC Irvine.

Tales goes on my most hated game of all time. Cause I actually purchased it for full price thinking it would be a good game.

SoA = best RPG ever.

What I don't understand though is, was he pretending to be Japanese and living in Japan, or just living in Japan. I got the impression he pretended to be Japanese also. I somewhat remember some of his posts from back then. I always thought it was funny this guy typing a 1000 word post on a forum in perfect English would throw in a disclaimer line at the end saying "sorry for my poor English" :lol

:lol did he really do that?

His posts were very in depth and that was the best thing about the guy. Probably the best poster on gaf ever.

One thing I've noticed about the KH fanbase is that a lot of females are buying the game and loving it... probably moreso than many other similar titles.

I think he actually is Japanese, just not living in Japan (of course he could be Japanese American, hence his perfect English).

I'm also pretty sure that he did post after that fiasco, as I remember some posters making fun of him.

I liked Kingdom Hearts although it had minor flaws (that damn camera....).

On the other hand, Tales of Symphonia is a great game with a simple story. I played the PS2 JP version so voices are perfect and the "tales" unique battle system is the best one I've ever played. Anyway, ToS isnt as good as the other tales for me, Namco 3D graphics isnt nearly as perfect as their 2D are.

I hated the camera, gummi ship, and level design. TERRIBLE.

Yet, for some reason, I kind of liked the game. 7.5/10 I would say. I think it was mainly do to a couple AWESOME boss battles, and tons of cool stuff to find.

I felt the graphics were great, for what they were trying to accomplish, and the story was interesting (although even more incomprehensible than typical FF plots).

I have no major nostalgia for Disney or FF characters, although I like some of each.

Supposedly KH2 fixes the camera and gummi ship. If the level design is good, I will thoroughly enjoy it.

I went out today and rented it since I've wanted to play it since it came out, and lordy, it's such a horrible "game".

Not only am I made to listen to the most awkward and forced dialogue ever, I have to wade through this cheesy, pseudo-emotional crap story also. While the combat is mildly fun, it's broken up by huge spans of shitty platforming and pointless collecting.

And no, I'm not impressed by the graphics either. The CGI is very nice, but in-game there is no attention to detail and absolutely no interactivity with the world.

I hope the second one has a more solid story and combat as its primary focus, because the series DOES have potential. I'm going to play on, but it's so bad right now that it's giving me a headache.

:(

I think must have been wrong game in your sleeve, or your feeling especially grumpy today? Like any other action rpg, it doesnt offer much depth or controls(kinda like that game WoW here that every raves about) but fun light little experience.

If you're talking about his actual posts, they were never very good and never took them seriously. If you read them, most of them were fluffy marshmellows except not as tasty. I think I have his Suikoden 3 post still where he goes off his horse he had or something when he was younger and goes on about that for 3 paragraphs. I swear he spent more time talking about how the game made me feel than talking about the actual games.

I usually just skimmed those things, but that skimming along with the praise others gave him, gave me some faith. Of course, after both KH and Sui 3, I had learned my lesson. :\
