I was checking out the recent review for The Sims 4. It got a lowish score, a 6, and was looking for the comments from the peanut gallery.......and there was none there.

I went back and checked the review for Dead Rising 3 for PC....the explosion of comments there, also gone from the review page.

Did Gamespot finally get fed up with all the reviewer-trashing the comments usually devolve into and remove them altogether?

um, that's not true. It would be a good place to correct the reviewer if he stated anything factually incorrect.

can't remember how many times reviewers at Gamespot and IGN, misinformed readers with statements that were not facts.

like years back regarding MLB The Show.

I usually HATE there not being comments in a video/article/anything no matter what. It just makes me feel alone.

Review comments are normally absolutely terrible so I actually don't care about this.

If they did that is fine, it is their site they can handle it however they like, but isn't normally customary to publish some kind of notice before hand? Like a general "We are making these changes and here is why" kind of thing? Did they and I just didn't notice?

There's value in a comments section, but the problem (and the point where I agree with you) is that those on these sites are CNN-level comment sections, which means complete trash.

I tried viewing separate reviews on two separate browsers, one of them being IE where I don't have adblock. The one thing I could think of is that maybe their comment service is just down and so the comments won't load for the time being.

comments sections, particularly on reviews etc. are the fucking worst. What was that case study that one website did with its science articles? People who read the comments were more misinformed about the article than those that read the article without comments?

Yep IGN is a great example of this. So many console wars. It's sad when I focus solely on making puns in comments, but I am still more relevant than 60-70% of posters

I commented there all the time on a ton of articles and yeah, I'm pretty happy it's gone for reviews. Even though I have a GAF account I still do comment on Youtube videos, Gamespot, IGN and the sort.

I'm confused by it too. I was happy when IGN said they'd do more with moderation but they really don't seem to have done anything since then. It's still one of the worst comment sections out there =/.

If you're making a comparison between the general posts in GAF with comments on YouTube or gamings news sites, don't try. Those comments are a whole new level of useless. I don't know what causes it either, maybe because people seek out a forum vs just stumbling into a comments section?

I don't agree with it. Comments sections should probably be moderated to get rid of useless dreck, but I enjoy reading them. Slashfilm often posts movie reviews and the comments sections under them are usually pretty entertaining and worth a read.

To me, getting rid of comments just seems like you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater, even if the baby is incredibly tiny and there's a hell of a lot of bathwater.

I get that the comment sections of most game sites are a bloody mess that should be avoided, but I think completely purging the idea is a bandaid fix and nothing more. It's nice to discuss things.

Of course the problem is getting mods to police that and crack down on unnecessary bullocks.

I feel like the few good discussions I've had on sites like IGN outweigh the garbage I've had to sift through to get to them.

I don't blame them considering the usual content of comment sections, but I was looking at the site and checked the Dead Rising 3 PC review. It was incredibly awful, told me nothing.

Lack of moderation is a big factor. So many people should get banned. Hell, the IGN comments during the whole Tomodachi Life thing and all those homophobic comments should have been purged but never was. No useful discussion is ever taking place in those comment sections, just name calling and an endless amount of slurs.

Who are those people in this thread, did you mean people pointing out specifically comments on news articles and reviews?

The structure of comments on a news article is different from a forum thread is different to a video is different to 4chan.
