Did I buy a counterfeit Dualshock 4?

Jill Sandwich

The answer is probably yes. I 'saved' £15 buy buying a Dualshock 4 on eBay using Buy it Now. When it said shipping would be over a week, I immediately realised this seller is not 'based in the UK' as stated on the page. The PayPal username on the receipt was Chinese. I went back to the listing and scrolled down and sure enough it's coming from China. So, my bad, I should have been a bit more thorough. But they have PS4s over there so maybe it'll be a genuine model. I try to be optimistic. But...

-The tracking number given didn't link to any service.
-When after 3 messages asking which courier they used, the courier website they sent me to said the tracking number was invalid.
-The model number on the box is different to the one on the pad, and the box shows a black pad on the back instead of the white model I bought.
-It came sealed with a USB cable inside when the box states it doesn't come with a cable.
-The model number on the pad itself is for the Jet Black model, not Glacier White
-The battery in the pad buzzes, the analogue sticks feel a little stiffer than usual.

The pad itself is solidly put together, and you would not notice it was a fake apart from the above points.
So should I take the L and not be a cheapass next time, or is there any likelihood of getting my money back? Has anyone had any experience of counterfeit goods and eBay/Paypal?

I remember Zhuge linking to photos of fake DS4 on his twitter praising overall quality of the fake. So totally possible. Check his timeline.

Haven't seen any fake DS4s yet, but I once bought a counterfeit DS3 that served me better than most originals.

Sounds like you got a counterfeit device though. Send pictures.

He is @ZhugeEX on twitter and has an extensive breakdown of the fakes differences of course there might be more than 1 fake maker out there but this will be useful when contacting paypal to say x y z on the box are different from offical version. He also tells funny jokes from time to time.

If the rubber on the sticks feels 'weird' and 'wrong' and peels off after a couple hours of use..

Congratulations, you have a legitimate DS4

Man this might be off topic but how are there counterfeit DS4s and yet not a single third party controller? It seems like the demand for a different PS4 controller (maybe one with an Xbox layout and less battery draining LED) is through a roof...there were plenty of third party options on PS3 did Sony change its licensing for PS4?

totally wondering this myself.

My last encounters with 'high quality' counterfeits were easy to spot once you started using the controller. While externally everything looks correct once you start pushing buttons it starts to show. The button presses are harder and non-linear, there is ghosting or double registering of button presses, they feel a little bit lighter, the plastic housing doesn't feel the same, when you max out an analog stick and let go the sound is more mechanical and hollow.

I bought a counterfeit Wii U pro controller once (by accident). It looked super legit but you could tell when you press the buttons that it wasn't right since a lot of them didn't register in-game. I was kind of pissed. They were $30 a piece on ebay, and I bought 2 of them. One of them never made it and the one I got took 1.5 months.

I once bought a counterfeit pokemon crystal cartridge.

Still runs as of last summer. Pkmn blue and silver are dead. The battery or something.

Sometimes fake knock-offs are better.

It might be possible that he's selling stuff that failed Sony's QC. The buzzing battery would be an auto-fail on QC I'd think. So essentially you didn't get a counterfeit, just a production model with a minor issue maybe?

What. The last controller I got was $48.00 on ebay from a reputable seller. 100% legit. The same controller was like 73 dollars at gamestop after taxes.

And if you live in the states you can consistently beat that price by using Amazon Warehouse deals. Where you can regularly find DS4 controllers like new for $40-$45 and sometimes less.

LN on AWD is usually just a banged up box and thats it.

Honestly I rarely buy hw/accessories anywhere other than AWD. Also helps you can just ship it back to Amazon if it doesn't meet the description they put on it. Or get a big credit from them.

Buy your controllers from Best Buy and add the 2 year insurance which is like $8. Any time you want to replace it (you don't even need a reason) and they will give you a brand new one without having to renew the 2 year warranty. I've replaced 5 DS4's (these shits break too easily) and 2 xbone controllers for free.

Whenever the warranty is running out just renew it for another $8. Free (basically) controller replacements for life with bestbuy

Why not just get a legit one from a store? And then you picked the China seller lol

Because you can get legit ones cheaper on eBay. Lol. But yeah my observation skills were lacking that day.

So has anyone successfully got their money back from a situation like this? I should liaise with Hustle Time guy.

Game is selling 49.99 new and 37.99 pre-owned, I think that would have been a better option than Ebay.

The box is for a CUH-ZCT1U, the controller is labelled a CUH-ZCT1E.

If not counterfeit it may be a factory sample that didn't pass inspection and was sold black market out of the factory back door so to speak.

The control looks fine but the Box is the one that indicates you have something wrong. Usually copies fail with the box quality/ labels/ print / grammar
