Did MS really pumped US$100m in the Xbox One controller?

Superior to 360 pad in every way apart from the LB/RB as most have said. But yeah, its hard to use 360 after tuning yourself to XO. The weoght, coating, rubber sticks make it the gold standard, thats perhaps reinforced with its uptake in the PC market.
Not knocking the 360 pad as it was also the best during its generation.

Love it. Best control on the market. The bumpers bugged me initially because I tried to click them like 360, Dualshock, and the Wii U Pro, but then I adjusted to a slight index movement instead of removing my finger completely off the trigger and I have zero issue with them.

Glad they spent whatever amount they did on it, controller is God tier and looks so slick in titanfall colors.

I slightly prefer the DS4 for its symmetrical and shorter sticks but both controllers are great this gen.

The D-Pad is probably the worst part of the X1 controller though. It sucks for 2D style games. Click click click

My favorite part is the impact triggers. They feel really awesome with racing games.

yup i can agree my dualshock 4 broke after my sister used it for about 3 hours of far cry 4.
left stick rubber peel just went straight off.
called sony they told me ...

"oh you got a lauch ps4? yeah that happens all the time."

well at least they where honest to me :)
no questions asked got a brand new controller after 10 work days.

so yeah sony did screw up with the ds4.
but hey their return policy is amazing.

so i'm not complaining :)

I wish Sony would here. Rang them up on Friday but they said I need to take it back from where I purchased it and present the receipt. Who keeps receipts for everything they buy?

If the bumpers on the xbox one gamepad being awkward is such a common complaint from people who had no issues at all with the bumpers on the original playstation, ps2, ps3, ps4, xbox controller s and xbox 360 controllers, and those same people didnt need to figure out a certain way to hold any of those systems controllers to make them feel comfortable the xbox ones controller is flat out designed wrong.
This argument reminds me of people who blame the deteriorating thumbsticks of the ds4 on the hygiene or gaming habits of the users of these ds4's instead of the thumbstick material itself even though these users never had the issue with any previous systems controller. It just magically became a factor with the ds4.

None of those controllers even HAVE bumpers besides the 360 controller. The idea that it's like L1/R1 is false. You bump them with the inside of your index finger which rests on the triggers. That's actually how you're intended to use a playstation controller too it's just not as well designed for it. The one controller is flawless in that regard.

The XB1 controller is ultimately worse than the 360 controller because the sticks are too loose, too small, and too tall. I simply aim worse in games like Halo because of this. Very disappointed in the controller and I hope the rumors of a new build are true.

I've only held one for a few minutes, but that was my first impression as well. Loose sticks. I prefer the stout stiffness of the DS4.

Love the XB1 controller but it has a couple of flaws including bumpers and overly noisy dpad.

Still a great controller. I think some of the $100 million had to do with opening new facilities for the R&D

Xbone controller is the best ever made IMO. Feels perfect in the hands and all the buttons are just right, really wish MS would step up and make a wireless adapter. I almost want to go back to my 360 controller since its wireless on PC, but damn if the Xbone isn't close to perfect.

-I love the LT/RT, the feeling when pressing them just feels right, and especially when Trigger Rumble kicks in.
-The clicky Rb/Lb is something that I've learned to like a lot and the positioning all around is nice. I honestly don't understand how anyone could not like the positioning. They are perfectly designed to function with the LT/RT behind it and is suitable for all controller grip types (crabclaw and normal etc etc).
-Controller finish is great all around, from the tops of the analogs to the controller grip; it's an extremely comfortable design.
-Analogs feel perfect.
-Button positioning is perfection as well. I hated the Back/Star/Guide positioning on the 360 controller. I was bound to hit Guide or Start at any given moment and the first controller to perfect the positioning was that piece of shit Razar controller; which is very reminiscent of the Xbox One controller.

After having this thing since launch, I've got three things I'd love to see addressed:

1) ABXY button pressing is loud as hell; it would be nice if they weren't so distracting. Oddly enough, I'm okay with the Lb/Rb, so I don't know whats up with me. All I know is playing Killer Instinct, I just want to put a bullet through the controller to shut it up.
2) D-pad is a massive improvement from the 360 controller. But it's not perfect. It could be...
3) The guide button light. I see people complaining about the bluelight on the PS4, how it reflects off of their TVs and such. Well the Xbox One doesn't do that, due to its' positioning, but it does shoot light upwards. It's not lighting up the ceiling or anything, but if I'm playing a game in a pitch black room for; the light is enough to cast a very dim light on my face. Like if someone had a faint remote control LED light near you, it's just enough to annoy the hell out of me. It would be great if Kinect and it's all seeing ways could sense the lighting in the room and adjust it accordingly. I know it is capable of lower light modes and it would be great if it dropped down a few when you're playing in a very dark room.

Maybe Sony should have spent that type of money with their pad? Maybe. Terrible battery life and triggers that break or get jammed. I dunno if its justified if Microsoft really spend that much on the R and D for their pad but atleast the its held up pretty well,I have 3 of them.

They spent a lot of money on Kinect, and that resulted in Hololens and presumably other unreleased sensor technologies. I have no doubt that if they really did sink anywhere close to $100m in the controller, theres more than we see in the current controller, coming down the pike.

For me personally its replaced the 360 controller as the best ever so it was money well spent. The sticks do seem to be a downgrade in terms of how loose they feel and how high they are, but its nothing you cant get used to easily.

$500 mill adverting Kinect, maybe $350 mill but an absurd number in any event. Especially when they very few new exclusives at the time.

At least you won't run into that problem the ds4 has with its sticks. Bloodborne got the rubber finally coming off my controller.

Its a really nice controller and its a marked improvement over the 360 for sure. The sticks are the GOAT in my humble opinion.

Now where is that wireless adapter for PC? That would be really nice to have soon as I am going to be trucking through Witcher 3 with a wired X1 controller draped across my living room.

So thinking of the Bone's pad to have even worse build quality is mind-blowing to me.

The OP is massive hyperbole. He doesn't like the XB1 pad so he's saying it has inferior build quality. It does not. I play games EXTENSIVELY on my XB1 and I'm still rocking the same two controllers since I started (my day one controller, and a Titanfall controller I bought a few months later when it released). So my controllers are a year and a half, and a little over a year old respectively, and they don't have any drifting, any dead buttons, or any other nonsense that EVERY 360 controller I ever owned had prior to their redesign with the transforming D-pad... those are a little more reliable than the earlier ones.

I take issue with a lot of things regarding the XB1, and I will say that ergonomically I prefer the 360 pad to the One pad but I think I'm in a distinct minority there. But build quality? Nope, they're solid.

The One controller improved on some things but others felt the same or worse, which makes me think, where did all the money go to?

I think it's a marked improvement in ergonomics and function from the 360 pad (minus the bumpers), but I'm surprised they touted that high expense for what it is. It's certainly the loudest controller I've ever used besides my keyboard, and there's a weird contrast with how some parts of it feel cheap and others feel premium.

Overall I think it has the best build quality for this generation for consoles, though considering how forward looking MSoft was with the 360 it's surprising that Sony left them a step behind with features like the share button and headset compatibility.

That's the thing with R&D... you can try a lot of stuff that doesn't work.

Does feel like a lot though. What if they'd spent $10 million on R&D and $90 funding a better launch lineup? They could of bought 90 exclusive indie games for that.

Will they did spent $2.5 billion to buy one "indie" game.

Your math is a "little" off and crazy thing its not even exclusive!

Xbox One Controller is a big improvement over the 360 pad, and I do prefer this to the DS4 although the DS4 is also solid. I use the Xbox One pad to play MK X and it is perfect and the d-pad is night and day from the 360 pad, btw I have never been a pad player with fighting games as I am mostly familiar with Japanese/American sticks and buttons but the XB1 controller has made the transition from stick to pad for MK X very easy for me.
