Did Nintendo bork the volume of DS Lites?

So awhile back I was working at Best Buy when someone comes to me asking about headphones for DS lites, upon talking to him he said he didn't relize that headphones were essentially required to hear the DS lite's sound, immediatly I suspect something is wrong with his DS lite, but a coworker confirmed to me that his system was also like that. Is this something Nintendo changed from the normal DS to the DS lite? This is something that would keep me from upgrading if true, however I also remember when I first got my DS phat that the volume was turned all the way up, and it took me forever to relise that there was even a volume control, so I'm wondering if Nintendo just did the opposite and these two people were confused about the situation.

The volume through the speakers on my Lite is extremely low...even with headphones it's a major problem. I brought it on a plane trip a few weeks back and it was near useless because of the volume.

I forgot how the volume was on my DS phat. But the DS lite is pretty quiet. I use headphones for my DSlite and it sounds awesome through it. It's not a big deal for me.

From my experience, the Max volume on a Lite is lower than the original, but for me it is the volume I am used to using. Not only that, but though the Lite is lower in the max range, from my experience, the quality of the sound output is better.

The newer model of Lites are much louder than the original DS Lites, though. Not as loud as the original brick, but better.

I don't get this headphones thing though. My 'newer' model of Lite is super-loud even on a busy high-speed train (as I've discovered on those evenings I forget to plug my headphones in!).

So the DS lite is essentially useless as an alarm clock? I actually use my classic DS as an alarm clock now I've played most of the good games on it.

Really? I've used several different pairs of cans with mine and the volume on high is still noticeably lower than most of my other consumer electronics.

I've been using my lite as an alarm clock for about a year now and it works great. I suppose it depends on how loud you need your alarm to be, as some of the roommates I've had would barely be stirred by a crate of beeping lites.

My 1st gen DS lite is my primary alarm clock and has always worked fine for me.

I'm surprised at how many people in this thread use their DS as an alarm clock.

Awake Training DS is the hot new non-game it seems.

I only use it when I'm on vacation for the most part; but in a pinch, I've used it otherwise. It's not great but it works.

Thought this was about quanitity to retailers, as in Nintendo's making way for a new redesign soon. :lol

Never had DS phat, but my DS lite is kind of too loud on maximum, usually I keep volume on medium so it won't disturb other people and I still hear it pretty clear. Maybe it's just because I bring it too close to my face.

I've always been suprised by the sound quality that can be gotten from the DS lite.
I never had a DSphat, but I usually am either playing a game on silent or with headphones on my lite.

I'd say yeah. I always seem to see them sold out at stores.
Joke?

yeah most of the time i have volume off anyway. but now that the question was asked i think my phat was louder (sold it before lites came out) but its not a big deal to me.

WOULD YOU PEOPLE STFU?!! I'M TRYING TO PLAY A GAME ON MY DS!!! >:^(

Y'know...
We all know that Nintendo is terrifed of class action lawsuits and has lots of safety warnings etc.
A couple years back people began to accuse ipods and MP3 players of ruining an entire generations hearing. Not just because they were listening to ugly MP3 audio (badumching!) but because they were blasting themselves throught the ears with max volume.

I would not be suprised if Nintendo purposely used a weaker "amp" to make the audio less likely tp damage hearing. Gotta protect them children from the dangers of hearing loss. Its something few adults even really understand.

:D :lol

While it is a bit lower, I can still hear the volume on my DS just fine :\, hell I usually have my TV on lower volume than the Lite :D

The sound is crisper too. I noticed the Phat DS has a crapload of noise when you plug some phones in it while you can barely hear it in the Lite, might have something to do with that.

The built-in speakers are horrible with lots of distortion anyway. I use headphones all the time, and never had issues. Some games even use dolby prologic if you hook it up to a surround system. Certainly it sounds interesting. :)
