This is probably what the next version of GAF will by like at least.

Just take away the banner and stylesheets and there you go.

well i'm going to take a nap and hope everything is back to the way it was when i wake up. already have my external avatar in place.
 
I'm not *that* sensitive. Anyway, I was just getting extremely aggravated trying to update the NPD thread with these partial page loads and hangups going on, so enjoy avatar-free GAF for a moment.

We're going to keep trying to figure out a way to optimize the internal avatar system so that I don't look extraordinarily silly for changing us over from the external urls. ;b
 
I'm all for external avatars coming back, because then we can have rotating avatars again!

I know avatar hosting is always a better solution (better control + you don't have avatars disappearing depending on which external services are used), but I can imagine for a place this big they indeed have to be a sizable increase on server load.
 
Everything is so much easier to read without avatars creating so much whitespace. Well, except now I can't assign anything said to anyone.

Have you upgraded vB versions yet? I would think that the new version would be better on resources... but then again, vBulletin is a mess anyways.

I never realised how damn near impossible it is to tell people apart. It's all just one blurry wall of text.
 
Everyone knows why the avatars are off right? We have two huge threads in gaming, the NPD numbers came out the same day that multiple outlets leaked the new Nintendo console.

I think GAF doesn't thank you enough. I realize you do a ton of behind the scenes work to keep GAF as the forum we all know and love and I appreciate it. So thanks.

Let us just go back to the way things were before. If internal avatars are such a huge strain on the servers, go external. I do not want to see the stability of the forum come E3 if we're still using internal avatars.
 
Whoa....ALL avatars have vanished for me, including mine which I uploaded per the new rules beginning of this week. I can't even find avatar options under my User CP.

I do have see avatars checked so they shouldn't be invisible. What's the problem here?

Edit: Ahh. I see. Well boo.
