Did you ever think Lulu's (FFX) design was cool?

I wish some of the FF games let you choose. I mean, FFX even lets Tidus say he's not interested in Yuna. You can tell Lulu that she's more your type, and Lulu says something like "I'll keep you in mind, boy", and earlier in the game she even says that Tidus looks like her dead lover.

wait what???? i never knew that lmao. I never finished the game but who would expect that hahahaha.
Yeah, there was like...no romantic inclination between them at all. Sure, she was with his brother, but I liked to imagine that Wakka's brother was less of an idiot than he was. Though if FFX and FFVIII are anything to go by, someone at Square loves marrying hot goth ladies to dorks (looking at you, FFVIII Cid and Edea!).

I was a hormonal 15 year old when this game came out. I was not paying attention to below her waist. I can barely even recall the belts. I don't hate the belts though. It's...different I guess.
Ayy, this scene:

You made my day. XD
I put her at the lead of my party just for this:

Yep, still do. Her top is a bit ridiculous, but I think the design overall is really distinctive.

Dodging lightning bolts, however... that sucks no matter what she's wearing.
I got to 194 lightning bolts and blinked at the wrong moment. Sigh. She was also, objectively, an awful character. Completely unusable in hardest optional fights in the game because her limit break did piddly poor damage. You had to use...fucking Wakka.

Honestly if you took out the belts and weird dreadlocks / rat tail things I think it's a great character desgin.

I thought it was super cool when I was like 14 though. But it's pretty hard to say how much of that was due to boobs because, well, I was 14.

She's 100% viable in every fight in the game that doesn't take place underwater. The differences between party members in the post game of FFX is vastly overstated.

As for her design, I like it. The belts and her cleavage seem out of place on such a serious party member, but the rest of the design is great.

I hate how some gamers today think everything needs to make sense or be realistic. It's a fantasy game for Pete's sake, people wield magic swords and can summon beasts and gods, why would I think a belt skirt is out of place or stupid????

The dress part is absolutely idiotic. Could have made it some kind of mesh and it would have looked far better. I do like the overall "gothy"ness to it. Good idea, bad implementation.

I also got a kick out of her wearing that bulky fur coat while living in the tropics. Nomura is a moron.

Nomura must of had a midlife crisis goth runway model fetish, because since FF7 you just couldn't get away from that art style.

And yes, I thought it was cool when I was a teen and young 20ish but I look back and realize that I had bad tasted, but by a marketing perspective, it served it's purpose.

Its a fantasy game, who cares if makes sense or not, cloud big ass fucking sword makes sense ? some of the attacks of summons make sense trowing planets at you ?
But people goes crazy about some zippers and belts in some character cloths...

Its fantasy, its weird and that is why i love final fantasy. Its diferent from other rpgs.

No it always bothered me. She is from Besaid. It is a sweaty tropical island where people work all day in the sun. The rest of the people from Besaid look like they're wearing Polynesian inspired fashion because of course they would be in that climate. I mean I have no idea how Wakka isn't freezing at times his outfit is so exposed.

Lulu looks like she was kicked out of a Depeche Mode concert. All that fur and leather, how is she not fucking boiling?

I never noticed the belt skirt until I read about it online. The game's always busy panning the camera like this:

cfx1YhF.jpg

I would feel secondhand embarrassment playing the game with someone else watching the way the cut scenes pander to her cleavage.

All of it but the belt skirt is fine to me.

I was mostly like HOW DOES HER DRESS STAY ON HER BOOBS DOES SPIRA HAVE DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE EVERYWHERE. I don't think I really thought about it much other than that.

I love it. I always thought is was insanely impractical considering she's travelling all over the world in a floor length dress and also lives on a fucking island with all that fur, but it's so silly that it's endearing.

I haven't played since it came out and honestly didn't even know about the belts. All I remembered were her boobs being out all the time. Thanks you ruining it for me.

2004 on PS2: It was awful
2016 on PS4: Still awful.

I literally still debate who got the worst costume on X, Tidus or Lulu. It would have been nice if they added extra costumes for the remake to fix the horrors worn in this game.

Also, it gets on my nerves how 99% of the time her fingers seem to be glued together and stuck in a straight position. The few times you can partially see her hands, they are never animated. Even in cutscenes.

Wow, I never noticed her skirt was made out of belts all this time. I guess because of SD TV back in the day and I still haven't played any of the HD ports?

Lulu strikes me as a flat character in general. She really doesn't have much of an arc or any serious development like many of the other characters. The Chappu stuff seems to be a bigger deal to Wakka throughout the game, and Lulu has just sort of already accepted it by the time the game starts and continues to accept it. Oh and I guess there's some stuff about how she failed another summoner once before but that never really manifests in anyway that is terribly interesting or central to the plot.

Contrast this with the development that we see Wakka, Yuna, Auron, hell even Kimahri helping Tidus open the Chamber of the Fayth in Bevelle when before he's been militant about not letting him anywhere near them is a stronger moment of character development than I feel Lulu ever has.

Feels like there was maybe supposed to be more to her character that was cut or something...?

Yeah, she was definitely underused.

She was cool when she was on screen though. Very composed, pragmatic, distant yet caring. I liked her character. Never even noticed the belts back in the day.

Honestly, it's a pretty terrible design. It doesn't make a lick of sense in the context of the world, the costume is at odds with Lulu's sober character and it just never looked good beyond "wow big tits".

FF X has by far the worst character designs in a mainline FF.

Lulus design always stood out the most to me. Yeah the belts are kinda weird but I grew to like her design and kinda wish we had more unique looking characters like that in FF games.

The thing that gets me about Lulu's costume is how nobody in-game treats the belt skirt as unusual, not does it really suggest anything about her character.

The belts are just there; no reason besides making us laugh at Nomura's excess.

Agreed:

I love Lulu's design sans belts. Like a lot of people have said, I think I kinda forget the belts are there, and my brain just assumes she's wearing a nice dress, not a hundred bloody belts.

Seriously, was that a joke at Square that went too far? For a laugh, did Nomura go, 'hey, what if I make a dress out of belts?', and then was surprised when no one complained?

What makes the Belt dress so absurd is that the belts could(should?) cause Lulu to trip.

Spira forbid she ever walk on an even slightly rocky road.

Yes, back when I was 14 I of course thought that a big breasted goth girl was pretty cool.
Sometimes I wanna punch 14 year old me in the face for various reasons.

I never really noticed that the dress was made out of belts until a few years ago though.

Looking back, on some level, I knew Lulu's costume was cosplay bait. Probably the first time I ever saw it.

I was a teenager, so I approved. But, was it 'cool'? Not really. FFX's designs aggravated me.

I liked Lulu's design. A belt dress for a gothish black mage just makes sense. I do agree it doesn't fit the context of the FFX world.

Yeah, my beef with her design is that it doesn't fit the world she lives in.

1. she's the only mage in the world who dresses like that.
2. she walks around like that while living in a beach.

They could have had some black mage order that wore goth clothing somewhere in the game, but alas.

From interviews you can feel that Nomura went overboard with some of the designs in X because he was excited about what the power of the PS2 allowed them to do. He wanted to see what they could accomplish and went nuts with the details. It's literally the only reason why Lulu's belts exist.

"There were some big changes made upon moving up to the PS2 platform. According to Nomura, with the PS2's capabilities, it was possible to show the details of the clothing and accessories, so he drew the character designs out to the smallest (and hardest) details he could. With Lulu's character design an example of such would be those belts on her skirt. He mentions that there is actually an order and certain way those belts are supposed to be buckled. He made specific requests to have everyone working on the game keep the order of the belts."

Think what you will of his work, but, for better or worse, he's always been very focused on how the in-game models would turn out while drawing (the opposite of Amano in that sense).

Wakka does 1.3 million damage per attack. Lulu can't even break 1 million, in my experience. If you have a video showing otherwise, I'd appreciate it.

That's how I felt about ALL of the FFXII cast, but I never felt like Lulu lacked development. She felt like the "big sister" of the group, and she had a lot of important emotional interactions with characters. That's more important to me than backstory, personally.

No one dressed like Auron, either. Something about the origins of black mages would have been good, but at least this isn't FFXII where every character can inexplicably cause explosions all over the screen before the plot is even unveiled. Such an awful game.

Her magic is fine, but if you use some black magic spheres to teach Yuna a couple black magic spells early in the game, you'll end up using Yuna in every battle and never use Lulu again which will cause Yuna to level up incredibly fast while Lulu falls behind. You can basically cruise through the game using Yuna-the-wonder-child for 90% of all battles that way.

On topic: I thought her dress was cool as a 16 year old and I still think it's cool today as a 28 year old. It's aesthetic is aging but I don't mind, I still like it.
