Did you ever think PS4 graphics could get this good?

The ultra preset wastes a lot of performance at 4k for virtually no visible gain, though.

I'm running it at 90+ fps all the time everything ultra at 1440p on my rig (Titan x pascal).

Gears 5 on xbox one x runs at 60 all the time, even though it's more like medium-high compared to pc. Still, it's a sight to behold.

PS4 exclusives are still on another level, just because Sony puts a lot of effort and has a lot of talent. The specs are what they are, and it shows in 3rd party titles.

There's no such thing as "secret sauce", just hard work on limited resources.

People can shit on sony all they want. but atleast they are still trying to somewhat push visuals on animations etc.

Nobody else seem to care even remotely. Maybe microsoft to some level but more like a afterthought.

Stil if you actually play those games on the consoles the limitations are visible everywhere.

About botw, the game looks great. but when i connected my switch to my pc monitor i had to disconnect it directly. God it looks horrible blow up on a bigger screen.

On the X it's doing 60 fps minimum, which means a shifting, dynamic resolution. Everything has a cost.

But seriously, these games are groundbreakingly beautiful... the hardware only has to unlock the full potential of the talent and passion that has been poured in.

Absolutely not, at the beginning of the gen i was very worried about future graphics with these shitty hardware.

Lucky for us, sony basically has wizards in their first party studios...

I'd be good with PS3 level graphics (if they actually made interesting games and not your common AAA dumbed down bullshit)

Take that trade off in a nanosecond.
 
I don't know if it was the YouTube compression but I wasn't blown away by TLOU2.

The recent FFVII Remake trailer though. I came.
If you were watching the State of Play version, then yeah, the YouTube compression was horrible. The standalone video is much better.
 
Order 1886 and driveclub have impressed me much more at the time of release.
Killzone has so much render problems(low quality volumetric, anisotropy filtering, lowres dynamic shadows and bad implementation of taa). so it has not impressed me.

TLOU2? I can't say The plague tale(4k with no CA) looks much worse.
 
I remember being heartbroken when they announced battlefield 4 as 900p and shadow fall being "60fps most of the time"

They turned that around pretty well
 
Things are about how I expected them to be for this gen. I thought things would look cleaner mind you, I never predicted awful TAA being smeared all over the majority of games. It's also a shame framerate still isn't a priority but it most likely never will be at this rate.

Most likely going console free next gen unless anything exclusive particularly interests me.
 
Astro Bot is one of the best looking console games this generation but its on psvr. Reprojection 90fps too. Some of the best water effects I've ever seen.

Yeah, I would. I've bashed Microsoft several times. I even went fuck Xbox and play mainly on my high end gaming rig I bought several months ago.

Early this gen when like half of GAF was whining and trolling about these new consoles hardly being an upgrade I was already really impressed with the visuals in Killzone, Infamous and then a a bit later Dragon Age:I and Driveclub.

So I fully expected that, as with almost every previous gen, visuals would just continue to improve over time

Shake my freaking head, people saying that ps4/xb1 games will not age gracefully. Look at this gen! Look at all the definitive editions, remasters and such. Just a bump in resolution and frame rate and the games look awesome.

Since the ps2 era most games age great. Just look at emulation of gamecube and ps2 on pc. Hell, even look at ps2 era games that have been released on ps4 like Final Fantasy XII.

Nintendo games do a great job dealing with the limited hardware with a strong art direction, but don't act all superior.
 
Only God of War on Pro for me so far. While i'm looking forward to LOU2, graphics where they're just acting even if rendered in real time don't impress me. I like to judge them when there is lots of action going on not just walking in some scenery with the sun setting.

this gen pushed me to buy a PC next gen like no other. No way in hell am I playing Cyberpunk 2077 on these machines.

What do you mean with performance? 60 fps? Because this generation have much more games to 60 fps than older generations, besides PS2 generation or PS360 generation had problems with 30fps at the most games, when you have this generation almost all games are 30 or 60fps locked.
 
Botw wasbt beautiful to me even when it released.. It was typical Nintendo shit with huge sacrifice in emptiness and repetition. Switch games don't get a pass from me.
Except that BotW is a wii u game that was ported to the switch at the end of development, it would be like comparing a cross gen game from ps3/ps4 like yakuza 0, anda say that you are disappointed that the ps4 doesnt do better than that.
 
Well yes. I have been through enough gens to know that second and third gen games look vastly better than launch titles. When i saw how good KZ shdaowfall, Ryse and Infamous looked, i knew we were going to be in for a treat at the end of the gen.

All you have to do is compare AC1 to AC Black Flag or Uncharted 1 to Uncharted 3, and you will see the massive gap in visuals.

The only complaint i have is the draw distance or the LOD in the distance. Death Stranding's gameplay vids have shown vegetation almost missing in the distance and some pretty harsh LOD pop in on rocks in the distance. it looks fugly and ruins the immersion. FFXV had a similar problem. i wish they had used the extra horsepower of the pro to push the draw distance LOD instead of just pushing pixels. I am seeing a little bit of that already in TLOU2's trailer. the buildings in the distance dont look as detailed and Ellie's face on the horse is pretty low res compared to when the camera is right up at her face. The LOD on the Snake in the hub world was so bad it looked like Thor's punch blurred him to oblivion.

Horizon did a great job masking this issue with the PS4 hardware by adding fog everywhere, and going with a stylized look so the smudy trees in the distance blended with the artstyle. RDR2 uses fog to a similar effect but they are very good at rendering distant objects and terrain. Spiderman's draw distance is absolutely amazing, but rendering buildings is always easier than rendering geometry and foliage.

other than that, i am really happy with how this gen turned out.

I do not think PS3 or 360 had such a massive difference from start to end.
360 looks similar-ish throughout the gen, probably down to easy tools
PS3 looks better at the end, because their first gen titles look worse than 360.

Are you not surprised how a PC GPU part, actually out-special sauced custom parts of yester-years?

Xbox1, is not even a contest here. Late expensive, and probably down to the use of 384bit memory bus.

To get a shoot-bang example and a platformer. Xbox 360 made huge steps in terms of visuals throughout the generation. And these examples are actually ones with comparable performance over both games.

But i guess Cerny was right about the 3rd-4th years when developers will unlock his secret sauce and make games look better than ever, bigger environment, more animations , more polygons.

I mean I'm sure Naughty Dog is showcasing the game on PlayStation 4 Pro comparable specs which is essentially double the GPU power as when Killzone came out. It's not just time and being more seasoned; its that they also have more power to work with too.
 
TLOU2 doesn't look that much better than Uncharted 4, Tsushima and Death Stranding also don't look much better than Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War or Read Dead Redemption 2.

I'm pretty convinced that they could look much better if current consoles had a bit more power at launch, but to me it looks like they already peaked roughly 2 years ago.
 
Ghost of Tsushima is the one that really impressed me visuals wise. I'll probably get it on the PS5 honestly
 
Not at all, I got a gaming pc .... then I haven't use it at all because of ps4, spider man , horizon, god of war and many others.
now I can't stop playing Judgment even that the graphics are meh. Still feel better than other pc game lol.

Every console eventually surpasses their limits once the Developers find the tricks to the hardware. The PS4 is no different.
