$$$$ Did you get an allowance as a kid...?

Nope, I was allowed to do what my parents told me around the house. At one point they tried it and then decided they didn't need to pay for what I was supposed to do anyways.

Haha, no. That's why I saved up every bit I had, worked my ass off and was only able to buy 1-2 games per year on maximum.

Everyone else who got $5 or $20 a week for doing nothing made me confused as a kid.

When I was a teenager I used to get $20 every two weeks I'd also save up my lunch money along side that and occasionally I'd do stuff for my grandma and she's pay me, growing up my siblings and I have always helped with chores around the house so you could say we earned our allowance. As a kid I didn't have an allowance but my parents would buy us stuff if we'd ask and even when we didn't and we were not wealthy or upper class by any means, my parents have always just been hard workers and very generous with us.

I would get a dollar a day for cleaning up the dog shit in the backyard. When I turned ten I started mowing the lawn for an extra five dollars on top of the seven.

I mostly made money through pocketing my five dollars meant for buying lunch at school and our schools Pokémon card trading ring.

Nope, when I asked for one I was asked for rent money.

Instead I did chores around the house, saved it up and spent it on video games.

Good times.

Got something like $5 per week for doing chores; Sweeping, mowing the lawn, cleaning up dog shit, making my bed, keeping my room clean.

Into my early teens, I started doing yard work for neighbours and the allowance eventually stopped.

Spent most of my early money on junk food from the local convenience store and saved up for a few games here and there.

Yes, but it was very sporadic...

But my mom would give me $3 a day for school lunch which I got for free so middle school and high were pretty good for me!

Barely, we weren't well off when I was a kid.

Literally saved loonies and toonies for an N64. You can only imagine how sweet it was to finally get it, saving a dollar at a time.

I got $2 per week IF my parents had the money. (This was mostly during the early-mid '90s.) EDIT: I managed to convince my parents to bump it up to a whopping $3 when I was a freshman in high school. The money was still inconsistent.

May as well use this time to rant: there was a year or two in which my dad started a family football pool. Didn't cost anything to enter, but the winner got an extra $2, so the prize money was really only if me or my brother won.

However - my brother was obsessed with football, memorized players, stats, etc. religiously. Me? I hated it (we only had one TV and I was only allowed to play video games on weekends, so football took away half my potential game time) and didn't know a touchdown from a field goal.

So during that time, I was lucky to get my $2 allowance, while my younger brother won an additional $2 almost every week during football season. My dad's a dick.

ÂŁ20 per month, I was pretty happy with that. That meant either a pre-owned game or two every month, or a new one every 2 months.

No .. although I did get $20 a week for lunch money. I'd usually not eat during lunch & use that money to buy videogames lol.

Nope, I also didn't have to do any chores and I basically got whatever I wanted but I was raised in a modest manner so I didn't ask for much.

No, but if I wanted something, my mom would give me a list of special cleaning tasks, like cleaning the bathroom spotlessly top to bottom or scrubbing the kitchen floor of washing, drying, folding, and putting away all bedding and clothes in the house.

Made me a hard worker and I usually got what I wanted, even if it took a few weeks.

Zilch

I did get EMA tho. God that was awesome. Having money for the first time...

Gave half of it away to homeless tho.

Never saw a cent from them aside from my birthdays. Got a job putting newspapers together with my brother a day after turning thirteen and haven't stopped working since.

Your dad is a dick for trying to get his sons to enjoy a past time he enjoyed and creating a reward for participation? Sounds like you have some repressed anger.

No allowance, but plenty of chores.

I did get a job at 12 though, and made around $50 a week, which was more than enough back then.

Yeah. When I was young, parents gave me like $100 per month. Well, 100 reais because I still lived in Brazil at the time. But the money came with the condition that I was meant to buy everything I wanted - like, soda and stuff like that had to come straight off my money. They just paid for the essential things, which didn't include my school lunch :P they probably would have paid for it if I just ran out of money, but that never happened.

I remember as a kid thinking that $100 a month was so much money I'd never spend it all, but then it started to add up with things like fast food, bus tickets and I was like "Wow. I have to like, calculate what I spend each day if I want to do X." I know I was a fairly spoiled kid, but having to actually manage a budget made me realize how expensive things felt if that makes sense.

Parents said they did it that way to teach me to manage money as a kid. I think I'm fairly good with money now and to be honest I can safely attribute that to that time.

I got $2 a month in elementary school, $5 a month in middle school, and $20 a month in high school, but my parents would also give me money specifically to go out with friends because they knew I'd never do it without an incentive (took me a long time to be properly social). And also got a few bonuses for doing chores that were above and beyond what they normally expected of me (like crawling under the house to get rid of rats). I'd also sometimes take short term jobs for neighbors (like dog-walking or looking after their cats or whatever).

And this taught me how to be a miser and obsess over every purchase. I basically bought everything used and agonized over anything that was over $10.

I mostly just got lunch money from my mom during the week. If she had it, she'd give me money to treat myself to something inexpensive but I usually tried to save that up for a bit to get something I really wanted. I was pretty good at saving money when I was younger.

We were poor growing up, my parents still aren't well off. No money for chores but I feel like this was a good thing. I didn't do my chores because I got a reward from it, I ended up doing them because my family needed help.

It's crazy to hear about how some of my friends have still never done their own laundry or mowed their own lawn. That was like age 12 for me lol

I have never received an allowance, always had daily and weekly chores to do with no pay. Took small paying jobs here and there as a kid (eg. mowing neighbor's lawns) to afford money to do things I wanted to do. Bought my own first car, paid for all college expenses that weren't covered by loans, etc. FWIW, I grew up in a low-income house, 4 kids, single parent on a substitute teacher income. I think me and my siblings never really expected an allowance given our household income situation :-P I did have buddies at school that got $20-50 a week allowance, they had all the good video games and I'd just hang out at their place and play all the time. Pays to know the right people, even as a kid!

i never got an allowance but if i wanted to go out they would give me spending money for dinner and movie tickets and things like that

$20/mo from around middle school onward.

I started doing paper routes from 6th grade and continued till middle of 10th which netted me ~$100/mo. The per hour pay was atrocious but it was pretty easy once you got into the rhythm of it.

No and I still had to do chores. I'd be lucky if I wanted to watch a movie with friends and my parents gave me money to go. I had to recycle cans on weekends that I picked up from parks where my dad would have his league soccer games. It took a lot of cans to get that BFG gtx 6800 lol. Did make me appreciate the value of things so it was ok in the end.

28 dollars a day? Jesus christ thats rich.

actually i think it was 28$ a week not per day, that was so long ago so its a bit fuzzy. still since it was so long ago (12yrs+/-) it felt like a lot of money things were cheaper then

that been said, it meant also that if i ever wanted something that wasnt clothes, shoes, etc for example toys or video games i had to use my own money
