Diet Soda (pop) and weird weight gain

That's not necessarily true if something is messing with your insulin production or sensitivity to it.

I think.

This is true. But there's no evidence (yet anyway) of diet cola messing with insulin production or sensitivity (or none that I have come across anyway). I wouldn't rule out the possibility cause you never know with these things, but I doubt it's the cause at this point in time.

The surest way to spike insulin is large amount of oral glucose intake...which is not found in sweeteners as far as I know.

6 diet sodas a day? jesus man. Drink some water. You shouldnt have more than 1 a day, or even like 3 a week. Or never. They have no value whatsoever.

If you really must have caffeine and you're working out, why not just add some instant coffee into your (preferably vanilla/chocolate) protein shake?

Bottom line is simple: soda of any kind is inferior to water. And this is coming from a heavy diet soda drinker. I've lost weight on diet, too, but I've also been heavier. But that wasn't because I was on diet. I've been heavier and thinner regardless of that because I've always drank diet since high school. My overall weight has been tied to food, exercise discipline, and overall awareness of what I put into my body.

Don't think of it as "this one thing must be screwing everything up!" It's everything. Look at all of your habits and see what's contributing.

it's hard to say. But if diet soda has lower calories then it has lower calories. As simple as that. The only way to gain weight is to take in more calories than you use them/output. Smiple as that as well.

After I lost weight (and during my dieting) I turned to diet soda. I rarely take regular soda these days unless the store doesn't have the diet version and I'm craving something fierce. I have not notice increase in weight due to this. Personally I don't believe the body would just magically build calroeis because it's been tricked by sweeteners that's impossible, but there's a chance that the sweet diet cola made you crave for more food and hence the weight gain <- that I think is very possible, and I get that craving sometimes too, which I have to force myself to control.

It's not that easy.

If you drink soda while trying to lose weight you won't be losing weight unless you're huge and can spare the extra whatever carb amount they have.

Has anyone else suspected something similar? All other variables being equal, have you noticed diet pop packing on some pounds?
When I switched years back, I do remember getting hungry more frequently.

I just chalked it up to the body missing the calories it was used to and ignored it. It eventually went away. Also lost 30lbs at the time just by switching to diet from regular + exercise.

Diet soda has 0 carbohydrates. Not sure where you are going with this.

Ah, well, the OTHER thing I forgot to mention is that about a year ago, I started putting caffeine-free MiO in my water (MiO is a calorie-free (and caffeine free) flavor additive that has sucralose in it).

So I've got the Coke Zero on TOP of the MiO. Yeah, I need to back off a bit....

It's not that easy.

It really is though. these are not my words. It's the words of a Endocrine consultant who runs a weight clinic as his speciality whom I was attached to for abit. We had many morbidly obese patients who came in and were put on certain diets like milk diets etc.

The balance of calories is what makes the major difference. Metabolism might play a small part, but it's inane to say that metabolism is affected so much when dieting that you stop losing weight, and there are sutdies on pubmed that look at this.

I've tried this myself as well, I've gone from 110kg to 82kg from exercise (Army) went back up to 91kg due to overeating with little exercise, went back down again to 75kg after controlling what I eat with some exercise, went back up again to 89kg after continuing to eat without exercise mostly due to stress and that I enjoy eating, and now back down to 69kg and stable and maintaining it for a few years now, thanks to little exercise bust mostly calorie counting/eating right with the occasional treat. This all happened from 2007-2013.

Now I'm not saying it's the same for everyone, as everybody is different, and some really do have hormone imbalances, metabolic syndromes etc. but for the majority who are trying to lose weight it's all about calorie input vs output

P.S. OP your caffeine habits are scaring me!! Have you ever sought professional help for it?

What happens is that you eat more.
Diet Soda doesn't just magically break the laws of thermodynamics.

I moved to diet sodas, but also calorie counted, and have lost weight.

you're fine. I typically have 6+ cups of coffee a day.

Just this morning I had 3 12oz coffees and 2 energy drinks!

Will have a couple more during the afternoon. Been drinking coffee this way for 5 years now, ever since I started drinking it out of necessity during my summer job after graduating from high school.

Nothing will cool you down faster than an ice cold glass of water.

Start cutting off the caffeine.

I feel guilty drinking any type of soda once every couple of weeks, much less six times a day. Thats insane! How is that even remotely healthy?

I haven't noticed diet soda doing anything to my weight, or my appetite for that matter. I average somewhere between 1 and 2 1.5 liter bottles of coke zero a day.

I did the same for years after and during undergrad.

Then my body realized what I was doing to it. Had to stop.

I don't get why people are so quick and eager to defend soda (diet or otherwise). It's interesting.

Jeez, 6 diet sodas a day can't be good for you. If that's a positive change then the rest of your diet may be just as questionable. You may be eating more (or more calorie dense) foods when changing to diet soda, or you could alternatively be putting on water weight due to drinking more liquids.

I would agree that my body probably can't hold up with the treatment I've given it. Horrible diet, very little sleep, drink lots of caffeine. My pops has done the latter two, and seems to have been developing the former since his meals now subsists off of a big lunch, small dinner, and alcohol. He's done fine, and doesn't exercise nearly as much as I do.

My little amount of time in this life has lead me to mostly look at your overall lifestyle. I was surprised when I went to the doctor recently--expecting a horrible bill of health due to my bread, pizza, banana, alcohol, French fry, protein shake diet--when she wanted to know what my diet was because I had outstanding health. One one issue(blood pressure too low) indicated that I needed more sodium intake. Stay active and don't lay on the couch all day, and don't overeat. Drink water at meals, or diet coke. It makes you less hungry during the meal.

At age 32 I have finally started to get a little belly fat. After cutting out soda (a little freaked by the death of Ryan Davis, no matter what anyone says I find it hard to believe his diet choices had nothing to do with what happened) and doing a 1/2 hour of cardio every 1-2 days over the last week, I believe my belly has gotten slightly smaller. That fast. YMMV.

Well, not everyone's physical makeup is the same as yours.

If the research comes out in 30 years and shows that today's obesity has been caused by overeating and more sedentary lifestyles, I'll be fucking amazed. After seeing all the research my wife has done on the topic, there's clearly a variable(s) that's popped up in the last 40 years or so. Her guess is sugar and sugar substitutes. She makes a good case.

And yeah, I had the same medical situation. I ate like shit, and the doctors said I was always good to go. Doctors still say the same, but I've completely shifted my diet. Anecdotal, but I feel a million times better (and more awake) than I ever did before.

Maybe i'll go cold turkey on the diet sodas and go back to 4-6 liters of straight water. Oral fixations are bad.

You'll take my Vanilla Coke Zero when you pry it from my cold bloated dead hand.

Oh wow, I haven't seen this in a store yet... Sounds good.

I haven't had a soda in awhile though, sticking to mostly water outside of coffee/tea for my caffeine fix in the morning.

Diet soda definitely increases weight gain.

You probably aren't going to change - but you really should cut them out of your life and just drink water for a while. Detox your body.

You linked to two websites that both link the same study which was linked in the OP. Which merely says that Diet Soda makes you crave sweet things, and therefore Diet Soda drinkers are more likely to eat sweets. Diet soda is fine.

From the Perdue article.

There are five FDA-approved artificial sweeteners: acesulfame potassium (Sunett, Sweet One), aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet), neotame, saccharin (SugarTwin, Sweet'N Low), and sucralose (Splenda).

All of them are chemicals. “Saccharin was one of the first commercially-available artificially sweeteners, and it’s actually a derivative of tar,” says Swithers.

Do you really want to be drinking CHEMICALS? No thank you, I'll stick to my non-molecular based natural sugar.

Until they can prove that diet sodas in and of themselves cause weight gain, I'll continue drinking my one Coke Zero a day with my dinner. Never had a problem losing weight when I wanted to by watching what I eat. Lost over 20 pounds in the last few months by simple calorie counting, not via any crazy diet or very particular forms if abstinence, and without starving myself. Everyone's different, but I think people try to make losing weight more complicated than it is.

Not really on the exact topic, but I used to drink alot of soda, like 2 months ago. I remember I drank probably over 90 cans of gamefuel when Halo 4 came out in November alone.

But in May I decided to just cut out soda from my diet, and I havent had soda since, other then probably 3 sips in total from other peoples beverages. I always read about caffeine addiction and how terrible it is to just stop drinking soda. I honestly was afraid and thought I was screwed, but nothing really happened other then I was alittle more tired during the late afternoon. Milk, water, and powerade are my main drinks now

Powerade isn't much better for you, honestly. Lots of sugar in sports drinks.

I tried drinking diet soda with my whiskey, but it seems to fuck up my weight loss way more than juice or soda + whiskey. I think I'm just going to use normal sugary mixer and take the carb hit but mix it stronger with some ice.

This is very important. Is it a Canadian whiskey?

Sparkling water killed my Diet soda addiction.

Pellegrino and this if I want more fizz.

It's almost as if diet soda only helps slimming and weight control as part of a calorie controlled diet.

wait a second, that sounds really familiar...
