Digital Board Games Thread: Async Multiplatform Meeples

I'll grab those IAPs and play Star Realms if anyone cares to drop me an inv (AstroLad). Such a great game.

I grabbed Lanterns and played through the tutorial so far and it's really well done. Looks like the online requires an account so if anyone needs friends on that I'm AstroLad there too.

I have all the Star Realms IAP, too. HotHamBoy.

Hopefully they add the new Colony Wars stand-alone expansion sometime next year.

Would love to see a digital version of Epic too!

Any impressions on Space Food Truck?

Sent everyone an invite for Star Realms! I grabbed Fleets + Fortresses and would like to give Gambits another look down the line. Any thoughts on these mini-decks so far?

I put off buying this because a gamer friend played the table top and hated the randomness they introduced, and Gambit felt that way to me. Took his word since he likes Ascension so he has a tolerance for BS but going back to Ascension has made me miss uniting off bases and attacking the player.

Apparently he Kickstarted the follow-up game, Hero Realms, and it's arriving this week. Said it addresses his issues with SR.

Oh man, I'm going to have every game in this bundle, for sure.

The iPad sure has been an incredible device if you like board games. The games cost a fraction of their physical versions with none of the clean up. Plus, online multiplayer! Who needs friends!?

I have Ascension plus all the expansions, except the newest one, and I paid less than I would have to buy just one physical expansion (dat 99 cent sale!).

If anyone wants to play I'm HotHamBoy, that's my tag for everything on iOS.

I paid for the $10 sub to play Dominion Online. All the expansions included for a one-time payment! Great way to try-before-you-buy if you want to get the physical expansions, they are pricey.

I've also recently been getting back into Solforge. Game is so fun, despite the flaws. The client is still busted to shit, though. Shoot me an invite if anyone wants to play that, too.

That reminds me, if anyone who plays Solforge has cards to trade, I have plenty.

Star Realms, too, as I mentioned.

humble only does android mobile bundles (IOS doesn't allow side loading apps by default), so if you only have an ios device it won't be an issue if you have everything anyways as you wouldn't have been able to buy them through the bundle.

Ah, yes, I forgot about all of that.

My phone is a Galaxy Note 5. I never really play games on my phone, though.

.

You have until December 31. Then they lose the licence and presumably shut down the servers for good.

The wait for a decent online version of Dominion once Isotropic shut down has been a long one :D

I knew it was only through this year but I didn't know about the license issues.

And so the wait begins anew.

Still, I think it's worth $10 to try all the expansions for two months.
Yup, make the most of it. If it's any consolation the people behind new version sound like they know what it needs to do. More than Goko/Making Fun etc.

Humble Bundle is up.

https://www.humblebundle.com/mobile/board-games-mobile-bundle

Carcassonne
Scotland Yard

$3
Splendor
Catan
THE aMAZEing Labyrinth

$5
Ticket To Ride
San Juan
Galaxy Trucker

I bought a previous mobile bunde that included Ticket to Ride and that android app stopped working several android updates ago. This is actually a recurrent issue with the humble bundle, there apps frequently get out of date and stop working.

I wonder if they fixed it or if they're selling a new version and previous owners are screwed?

Have you ever approached them with that question? They used to have application which handle side-loading and keeping track of the update but that is no longer available. I thought the app still get updated but I have to check it manually instead.

Does anyone tried or know these new digital games?

TreasureHunter by R.Garfield di Queen Games
https://appsto.re/it/6rOPeb.i

(Drafting game by Garfield, no less).

Nyheim di Happy Hobgoblin
https://appsto.re/it/eW5Zeb.i

(Inspired by Elder Sign:Omens and Warhammer Quest ACG according to the devs)

So Treasure Hunter is a recent Richard Garfield tabletop card game. It's mostly card drafting and then trying to get the right values to claim treasures on the board (high or low) with some modifications available and a few extra little things. I enjoy the game, but I love Garfield so that might help. :P Just start playing the app and seems really well done so far.

Thanks for the impressions!!!
I knew nothing about the game since one day ago, but it seems like it could be a great digital boardgame.
Is multiplayer async?

Just played AI and man it's pretty good. Or I just suck at this game (can never figure out a great strategy for getting the low Treasures). :P

I can't tell for certain about the online. Looks like it uses BSW, which I think is live, but have to create account first to figure that out. Not even sure it has pass 'n play actually.

It's like Queen's Kingdom Builder implementation then. Only live games with people on BSW (who don't know you are on an app).

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/?nation=en

Online site where you can play games online, but live instead of asynchronously. I think they wrap the online element of iOS games to play people with BSW accounts.

Ah I see, thanks.
I assumed it was async because in one AppStore screenshot I read 'active games' (which I assumed meant concurrent) and the game (from the videos I saw) seemed to have consequential turns, but I'm probably wrong (I would have greatly preferred async over online).

Anyway the game seems solid enough.

TreasureHunter by R.Garfield di Queen Games

Haven't tried out the digital game, but I did end up getting the actual game. Played it once. It's a solid, goofy drafting game. Along the lines of 7 Wonders, Fairy Tale, and Among the Stars. Having owned those three, also having Treasure Hunter seems a bit redundant now, and with the size of the box being the same as all of the standard Queen boxes, it needs to find a new home sooner rather than later.

I imagine the digital game would be fun to divert from not having a 7 Wonders app yet.

Playing the app made me realize JUST how light and swingy it is. Like if you get a 1 and there's a really high-value card on low then you can usually get a ton of points for very little effort. So I guess that is a differentiator that some may see as a negative, but I actually see it as a bit of positive since it's filling a slight void. Balance-wise I think they probably should have made two separate treasure decks with the high deck being slightly stronger overall since it's almost always more work to shoot for high cards. But I still like it. Love the art and just the total package makes the cut for me.

I can't buy the game right now but the dev just answered me on twitter saying it's actually async (yeah) and if I understood well, it has even iCloud sync.

EDIT: at last Internet works again here, bought.

Ok played many games of Treasure Hunter.
Actually I'm liking it a lot, it really shines against 5 players...you have to prioritize some loot over other because with so many players you are pretty much guaranteed you won't get everything.

It's really a tragedy when an opponent swing the odds in their favor using a special power, and it's really fantastic when you do so or counteract.

The app is actually very well done, both on iPhone and iPad, with some caveat.

Not sure why, music is non existent (sounds are nice), multiplayer require you to register and confirm (and change password) in a German only website (!!!!) and for the life of me I can't start a multiplayer game.
Tried to invite you Astrolad several times, added you as a friend...but nothing.
The app DOES ask you if you want notifications, so it's promising.

Oh...and then there is the goblin part...which is a almost a game on its own.

Looking forward to play more and possibly start some multiplayer games.

Looks like Castles of Mad King Ludwig is 50% off at least on Android. Comes with campaign and bot. No online multiplayers as far as I know.

I'm on there as CzarTim if we figure it out.

Hi!
After a tons of tries I've finally understood how it works (the german only online thing didn't help).
And I must say the async game is damn cool too, it introduces a new mechanic that enhances the strategical component.

BUT....as far as I can see to actually start an async game, ALL PLAYERS must be online.
When it's started, you can pause at will and took your turn when you want.
(I don't receive notifications but maybe it's a bug only for me).

When you play a 2 player game, at the end of the drafting phase you can permanently discard a card, and this enhances a lot the possibilities.
Actually now I had the most fun playing a two players game online.

If both are online, transition is seamless.

EDIT: Added you as friend...sent an invitation...but I don't think it actually send anything. If we are both online (green dot) we can start and then async away!).
I'm online on and off, in the next hour, in case.

Tried this in the BG thread without any bites, so will try here :)

Oh man, yucata.de (free, asynchronous online lay of mostly great games) has some amazing games up now.

If you want to play any of these please post your username and what games you'd like to play and I'll create a game once I hit the requested player count. Only real request is you try to check at least once a day after we start. :)

Automobiles (4p)
Carson City (3p)
Can't Stop (4p)
Castles of Burgundy (3p)
Port Royal (4p)
Rattus (4p)

Any of you played Caylus on ios?

The physical game is in my top 5 of all time, but the reviews for the app have been mixed, so wanted to hear what you guys thought before I splash out.

Also how is Eclipse if you have never played the physical game?

The game is solid, and the multiplayer works. I've played a fair few games with people on here in the day.
The problems are that you need to be on top of notifications and checking your turn. If you forget or miss it due to the game not telling you it's your turn your game will get zapped off the server after 3 days.
Some annoyances if I remember over poking you to confirm that you can only pass and niggles like that.
Same applies to Eclipse if I remember - miss a turn for 3 days and you lose something you might have been playing for weeks.

Caylus: I don't like the iOS interface, but I'm not a fan of the physical game either. Maybe if I were I'd be willing to get used to it.

Eclipse: iOS version is pretty solid with a pleasing UI. Letting it track all the fiddly components is nice. The major drawback is that you can't see everything all at once (it's a big game on the table, too) and have to keep your eye on several screens. There's a decent tutorial included (IIRC) for players who haven't played the tabletop version.

Wow never knew about this thread. And you guys are actually talking bout Star Realms. Sweet!!!! I really enjoy that game :)

Hello my new friends, lol

Ticket To Ride has got a new map - Germany £3.99

Steam - update says "Cross-Platform Asynchronous Multiplayer" + SALE
I've played a couple of solo games against the AI a long time ago and a couple of times IRL.
If anyone is interested I've set up a multiplayer game as DieselPioneer
the password is superrobot

You guys where spot on about Star realms! What an excellent app.

Can also highly recommend the app version of Brass.

Twilight Struggle landed on Android. Using Playdek for online multiplayer. Does this means I can play with people from other platforms?

Any good suggestions for local multiplayer games for a family over Christmas? Have ticket to ride and carcassone but doesn't pass-and-play spoil it a little? When playing the real version I like having the board always visible so you can be planning what to do, and you can see someone as they make a move so you can start swearing at them immediately :)

Do any of them let you use another phone as a way to manage your hand? Seems that would be a good combination - iPad as board and phones as controllers

Pandemic worth a buy? It's discounted at the moment

Carcassonne might be a good one, with maybe the Inns&Cathedrals and the Traders (the one with the goods).
There's no secrets so it's just what you do with the tile.
Plenty of fun with stolen cities and trapping meeples.

I sent an invite, didn't get a response.

So after I told people I would play these games I totally forgot about them. I've been playing pinball, real and digital, almost exclusively. And I never enable push notifications. Sorry!

Anyway, I know it's been over a month but I'm still down to play! Especially in Dominion if anyone bought the $10 pass for all the expansion. Their license end January first and a new app will replace it. I bought that pass a couple months ago and haven't played one game...

Btw, did i just picked up Twilight Struggle in ipad for $5! Nice price.

Has anyone played Space Food Truck? It's on sale for $5, too.

Pandemic is a great game and a good choice. Space Food Truck, the game I'm interested in, is also a co-op game with pass n play.

I also think Dead Man's Draw is an excellent same-screen game and it's free.

Other good picks for family pass n play:

Galaxy Trucker
Stone Age
Forbidden Island
Forbidden Desert
Splendor

The only game I know that uses the iPad as a board with players using their phones for their hands is Scrabble.
