Digital Board Games Thread: Async Multiplatform Meeples

Pandemic looks like it's on sale at $1.99.

Has anyone played Plague Inc? Was recommend but not sure if it's really a board game.

It isn't really a board game (on ios), more of a real time strategy game.

It is ok, I wouldn't go out of my way to get it but you can enjoy it for a while.

Anyone up for a game of Lords of Waterdeep? Want to start a game w/ a friend and would like to have 1-2 more. lmk your playdek username if so!

see a nice huge annual subscription fee. nice to see they've learned nothing. donald vaccaroni must be some special kind of clown

Took a look, it's defaulted to a year but you can bring it down to a month minimum for I think 4 euro?

Yeah if the implementation was good I'm not a huge fan of the model but...maybe? Part of the problem is that sure Dominion is still the gold standard when it comes to generic abstract deckbuilders, but it just feels really antiquated to me now. Most of the art sucks and the gameplay just isn't that fun to me compared to the 20 other deckbuilders I play (some on digital like Ascension and Star Realms).

But back to that implementation, here's Donald's comments on it, which really don't seem like a resounding cry of support:
Shuffle iT spent last January and February making an early version of the program, and showed it to us in early March. We were impressed with how much they'd gotten done in 2 months, and felt like they'd manage to do enough by today.

I was disappointed with the released version. Obviously the interface needs a lot of work. One big thing is just how much the program depends on the log. I think most players do not want to have to look at the log, like, ever.
...
After MF we wanted some established company that had done good work already. Shuffle iT pitched showing us what they could do in two months, and here we are, once again giving some new guys a shot.

They are the guys now; I can be optimistic or pessimistic but it won't affect the outcome. Good luck, Shuffle iT.

So I recently got an Amazon Fire and have been playing Pathfinder Adventures. This game is good. Way too small to play on a phone, but on a tablet, it's great. Hell, I'd probably pay for a PC version. Not having to set up anything really makes the game shine as that's pretty much the biggest complaint I had when playing through it physically. I'm hoping they continue with the other base sets.

Is it pretty easy to find a match of Twilight Struggle on Steam? Thinking about picking it up since my g/f doesn't seem to like it as much as I do.

Damn Mysterium got a really bad review on PocketTactics:
The Verdict

I believe the developers of Mysterium did what they could to bring this one to life on mobile devices. The game is attractive and I very much like the ability to zoom in and check out more minute details of the cards. There is also a clear intent to expand the game. Story mode additions for five other psychics will be released for free in future updates. Hidden Signs—one of the game's expansions—will be coming to mobile as well. The existence of a "DLC Shop" suggests that even more is planned for Mysterium.

Unfortunately, I just don't believe this is a great candidate for a digital game. You lose too much by not sitting across from your fellow players in a game like this. It's very tough to replace table talk, non-verbal communication, and banter with a chat room. The remaining multiplayer setup issues and lack of a compelling single-player experience are enough to make me very wary about recommending this game to all but the staunchest of Mysterium fans.

Mysterium is a big hit with a couple of my groups but I can't imagine playing it e-version style. Definitely not the same without the interaction.

Anyone need yet another digital LCG? :) Eternal is pretty good:

https://www.eternalcardgame.com

It plays quick and is simple while still offering a lot of decisions to make. It's pretty slick looking too for an early access game. Not quite Hearthstone level but definitely on par with Faeria/Infinity Wars type games. A little slicker that Gwent/Legends/Solforge etc.

One point of concern is the deck building, however. Decks contain a minimum of 75 cards and up to 150, which is a LOT. It'll take a lot of playing (or money I suppose) to get to the point where I have enough cards to mitigate the randomness a 75 card deck has (you can have 4 of each card).

Overall I'm really enjoying it, though. Find Slacker on there if you want to check it out with me. It's on Steam and Android now, iOS apparently in "Spring."

Potion Explosion is up on ios and probably other things https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/potion-explosion/id1162628471

Kind of an odd app given it is a simulation of a board game simulating an app...but I suppose it'll work?

It is a WONDERFUL adaptation of the board game!

The animations are gorgeous, and the whole experience is very charming.

I'm a big fan of the game. And I see this as a great supplement to it. Especially because my wife beats me EVERY TIME. Need to find some strategies!

But, on the whole, definitely recommended.

That's awesome. Star Realms is great, so I have faith.

Have you played Epic? I was a bit confused because I'd seen White Wizard's other deck-builder Epic Realms and just assumed they were the same game. This looks like an interesting take on MtG with a huge focus on playing draft games.

Yeah honestly at first I thought you were referring to Hero Realms, which I've heard really good things about (and which I was really hoping would come out digitally so I could try it). We'll see about Epic though -- have not tried that one.

Having played all of them (Star Realms, Hero Realms, and Epic), I have to say I like Hero Realms the most because of what they've done with it and what they're planning on doing. Since campaign-style games are so in right now, they're still working on making a co-operative adventure campaign, but the core game is solid, very similar to Star Realms. The class decks you can buy add some nice variable player powers which are pretty cool.

Meanwhile, Epic isn't a deck builder at all. It's more like a CCG like Magic or Hearthstone, except for the fact that nearly all the cards are "epic". You only get 1 coin per round to play a card and most of the cards you have cost 1 coin. These are all seemingly overpowered. Then you have a couple 0-costs which are much much weaker that you can play for free. It's a crazy bit of tug-of-war set in late-game antics of CCGs. It's pretty cool, but the rules were pretty meh, so a digital version that takes care of that would be awesome.

I backed, it looks cool. I also like that you get all the cards instead of having to buy packs. One of the reasons it's hard to jump into new games in this genre is how long it takes to get to a competitive level unless you're willing to drop $100.

I bought the paper copy of Epic on Amazon and will get it Friday to try with coworkers.

Would be cool to get a GAF draft going if they have it during the alpha.

Drafting is the only way I enjoy MtG-like games anymore. I'll be interested to read your impressions of the game when you get it.

Just played a game IRL, took like an hour but it was pretty fun! My friend who has never played Magic managed to beat me, but it was a constant swing. We just each took 30 random cards from the 120 that the base set comes with.

There's a lot of responding to what the other player is doing, so I'm not sure if the digital version would be async or not. Are any of the iOS Magic games async?

Woof, that's a pretty early sale on Potion Explosion...

WHICH I wholeheartedly recommend. Awesome adaptation of the physical game! While it (obviously) loses some of the charm, the effects in the game more than make up for it.

Yeah it's way better done than Colt Express which I thought was kind of a mess.

A new Ascension update/expansion is coming today.
sweeeet! perfect timing :D best digital BG ever. just wish playdek had actually been able to create that system where you had chat and rankings and stuff but at least they're still cranking out expansions

oh shit new update? nice la

edit: so this war of shadows expansion is to be played together with dawn of champions right? i remember hearing something about the way this game works is that the latest 2 expansions always work together

The cards that require the center row to be all day or night to acquire for free makes me think it's probably standalone or with the next expansion.

Dang I wish I could find people for live Galaxy Trucker multiplayer. Game is so damn good and the implementation is amazing. :/

New Ascension expansion seems cool. I like that it actually changes up some of the base way the game plays (ie you have to buy Mystics AND Heavy Infantry early) instead of just adding more broken/complicated insanity that I could never track in a non-digital format.

Haha yeah. It's a fun twist, but crazy how they add some insanely swingy cards like: If every card is Day, get this card and a billion points for free.

I like that the Mechana constructs still keep their value based on runes, even if it costs attack as well. Feels like it makes them feel a little less overpowered than usual. Biggest gripe is the art, looking through all the avatars and I really miss Eric Sabee's style.
