Digital Foundry: 007 First Light PS5/PS5 Pro Review - Performance, Features, Mode + More

Obviously, but still kinda pathethic, i bet u on ps6 we would get 1080p native with ai upscaling to 4k similar to dlss4 quality, making the resolution bit below native 4k, but still above native 1440p, so once again ps6 cant come soon enough xD
Is it though? You are getting a pretty decent 1440p resolution in the quality mode with some drops to 1152p. The issue is only with 60 fps modes that are pretty much new to these kinds of games this gen. Last gen's best looking game RDR2 still doesnt have a 60 fps mode.

I am actually perfectly fine with ps6 games targeting 1080p internal resolution upscaled to 4k using AI. The jump from PS5 is only 3x. So from 10 tflops to 30 tflops. Just getting two 1080p from 720p will take 2x of that 3x leaving very little GPU headroom to upgrade graphics.

it definitely sucks for base console owners but there is an option for them. The Pro uses AI upscaling from an internal 1080p resolution reconstructed to 4k, and uses quality mode settings. Ultimately you get what you pay for, and right now 6 years into this gen, its unfair to expect games pushing both graphics and framerates at high resolutions. Blame should be on Sony and MS for delivering consoles without AI upscaling. Not the devs who are hitting the same bottlenecks that everyone else has hit so far this gen.

The delta between the best and worst performing games this gen is really, really stark. Games like Ratchet and Clank, Horizon FW, Death Stranding 2, Indiana Jones etc all look better than this and run at like 4x the resolution. It's weird.

RTGI is absolutely destroying performance. the only ones that seem to get it right is iD Tech

Yup, couldnt agree more, what i was saying ps6 launching holidays 2027 wont be some early next gen launch no1 needed but most welcome event that many of us waited for :D
Even here on gaf i see ppl hoping/thinking ps6 gonna be delayed and not by a year but even longer, and im like wtf this thing coming as soon as sony can produce it even at higher than normal base console pricepoint coz ps5 is already on its last legs :P

The graphics are bad for the performance/resolution it's delivering. Low res textures, poor AF, poor animations. I don't think this game looks or plays better than Uncharted 4 based on the limited gameplay I've seen.

I'm actually not. Devs will target it and miss the target by a wide margin. Hopefully the ps6 hardware is strong enough that they can target 1440p internal. This way when the underperformers release their games, it'll still hit an internal res of 1080p.

Way too many games seem to be using RT just because the tech is there. On console the trade-off is really extreme: often cuts resolution in half and the results can be really poor. The worst I've seen is Alan Wake 2 (I think just on Pro?) The reflections all just look like noise. They obviously look worse than SSR. I literally played it at 60 just to keep it off. If you can figure out a way to use it to transform the lighting, great. Otherwise you're better off just waiting till next gen when the tech is really ready.

Exactly, this is the point.

There wouldn't be any issue if the game looked like Hellblade 2 or even The Order: 1886 at those resolutions and framerate on base consoles.

But awful shadows, very simple last gen foliage, obscene textures (the outdoor desert/shipyard footage in the DF video is shocking), simple animations.. what the game does well (like destructivity, that was however also in Uncharted 4 and probably even more extensive) isn't enough relative to the resolution and framerate it's delivering.

To everyone comparing Uncharted with this game, you're full of shit.

If this was a cooking show, Naughy Dog did an omelette while IOI is serving a 3 course meal.
The amount of different systems and mechanics, freedom to approach situations, NPC routines, conversations ... what are we even talking about?
Show me a game with the graphical prowess of Naughty Dog / SSM and complexity of Hitman.
Did you bunch complain back in 06 that Blood Money looks worse than FarCry and HL2 from 2004?
Games are having different priorities.

Yep. It's not some hard limit all devs are pushing up against, like some posters would have us believe. This is a middling current gen game and should be easily possible at 1080p60 on the base consoles. Even something really ambitious like SW Outlaws, which had proper hardware RTGI, while it COULD drop as low as 720p, generally hit around 1080p60.

If for sure has more gameplay systems.. but Uncharted 4 also has open levels with vehicles, and optional outposts similar to Far Cry.

AI is also worse than Uncharted for both stealth and combat. And U4 has for certain sequences that are much more complex than similar from 007. Take the basic driving sequence in 007 and compare it with this absolute insanity:

And not only 10 years prior, but a generation prior as well. It's not unfair, Uncharted 4 is not Ryse or Hellblade or The Order: 1886.

What does any of that have to do with it running at Ps3 era resolutions?
If the systems and mechanics were making the game hit a CPU bottleneck then performance shouldn't dramatically increase by lowering the resolution.

Most people here aren't complaining about the visuals themselves, but rather how shit the game runs considering it doesn't look very good. There would probably be way fewer complains if this was 1080p/60fps on base Ps5 (and like 1440p 60fps on the pro).

really bad example with Alan Wake 2 there imo, because that game's SSR is also insanely low resolution and noisy as hell.

I wish they'd let us turn SSR off in all games, but especially in games like Alan Wake 2 that rely on super noisy raymarched SSR it is just a complete eyesore.

all i know is the reflections looks worse with RT on.

It looks like shit compared to many other games thats for sure.

Im still likely gonna grab on ps5 pro. Pssr2 has been a game changer for the system

Wonder what sw2 version will look like. Less performance than series s but better image quality i guess.

I heavily doubt that... although they had to downgrade them compared to PC by quite a lot... still tho their SSR is also awful, even for SSR standards (which are already very low)

In my experience I didn't really notice the reflections without RT, either good or bad. With RT it's not so much the actual reflections that look bad (ie in glass/mirror like surfaces) but in anything shiny like metal. It's just pure noise. It might as well just be extra aliasing for all the benefit it offered me. So I turned them off, and I'd still have turned them off even if I had to drop to 40fps, instead of vice versa.

Not gonna happen, PS5 is a 6 years old machine

Has nothing to with the ps5 this is a badly coded game recent games like resident evil are beautiful and run at 60fps on ps5 this is simply a very average looking game by 2026 infact if it didnt have the bond license and was simply called "secret agent" looking like it looks and runs would get ignored completely

Resident Evil 9 on base PS5 is not any technical achievement...

You mean, PS6pro?

PC version is sharp

PS5 on base looks terrible, aliasing, shimmering, flikenring, low resolution
