Digital Foundry: Face-Off: Assassin's Creed Unity

I can only say I've been incredibly lucky given the way they talk about the PC version, not once have I had a crash in what is by now probably 10-15 hours of play. Graphics are incredible, game performs smoothly (i5 4670k, GTX 770 4GB), and I've only run into like two glitches in all that time. To me, it absolutely doesn't feel like an unfinished product, but I guess (most?) other people haven't been nearly this lucky.

What a pile of rushed-out-the-door horseshit.

Anyone who has bought this game up to now should be ashamed, and is part of the problem.

I'm a very satisfied customer so far, this might well end up being my GOTY.

Won't touch this with a stick until I see a patch to fix those frame rates. I'm not even that picky about frames but dipping towards 20fps is just lazy.

THis game should have never released in this state. March or April would have been such a better time for the optimization alone. Feel sad for all those hundreds of people working on it and were forced to ship a unfinished product.

They should have made next-gen versions of Rogue and delayed Unity till next November.

How is shit like this acceptable in a final product?

Looks like that Giantbomb letter was fake... It said they had the game running at 9 fps months ago.

I'm never buying another Ubisoft game day one again.

As I don't require the 60fps lock (thanks to G-Sync), the games performance on PC has been surprisingly good. I expected some real bad performance glitches, but haven't actually run into any notable ones. Maybe my expectations were incredibly low beforehand though, but as I said, I'm having a good time with it - and it looks great.

I still haven't had a single crash in the game. It's really weird how much variance there is in experiences even on relatively similar hardware.

When your processor alone is almost the cost of a newly released system, and you have almost a grand worth of GPUs, I don't think you can qualify your situation as relatively similar hardware......

I can't believe they released such an unoptimized game.... i pre-ordered the Notre-Dame Edition, but i will not buy this game until ubiscam release an almost 30fps-locked patch.

i will not buy the game at all if the patch will never see the light.

It's worth nothing tbh, not when the average fps is only 19 more. what a joke.
Its worth something when talking about what kind of performance one can actually expect.

Not defending the performance overall, just that <10fps isn't representative of how it normally runs.

patch 1.2 really really improved performance for me. constant 30fps with highs to mid 40´s. enjoying the game, haters gonna hate.

DF is trolling us

On PC it works on a 760 but it's a beta, on console we have an average of 20 - 25 fps but they are "stable"
Just wow

"Stable" as in not crashing so often.

Sooooooooooo......

X1 > PS4 > PC?

SIX FRAMES PER SECOND!!!!!! oh lord

Those highs are damning, but jesus are the lows fucking atrocious.
PC still >>>>>>>>>>... X1>PS4, if you get it to work, as far as performance and IQ go.

I can live without 1000s of people in a crowd. I don't know why Ubi has such a hard on for that.

To be honest a complaint often heard about earlier AC games was that theit cities felt too empty.

It isn't worth dips to 20FPS but for 'Next Gen starts here' marketing purposes I can see why they didn't really want to reduce NPC count.

This makes me sad; I’ve owned all of the console Asscreeds and had been really looking forward to Unity, but once they announced 900p parity I pretty much had written the game off, and these issues are just mind blowing for a released product. Won’t be picking this one up. FC4 looks solid though.

I can't say I've run into the same problems they have on PC. Frequent crashes is not something I've had to worry about.

I went from AMD to nvidia while playing. Uninstalled drivers with DDU. The only time I've had a crash is while testing overclock stability.

I wasn't referring to that 6 fps image alone. Dips into low 20ies and even below is a slideshow. To average at 25fps, the dips have to pretty common.
Not arguing with that, definitely.

Unnacceptable performance full-stop. The lack of ability to play it at 60fps is also stopping me from getting it on PC.

There is no good reason to release a game in this state. I really have to hope that people won't support this.

One year in on the new consoles and we already have the crap performance from the end of last gen, thanks Ubi.

I just started this game on my Xbox one and the glitches are way more noticeable than the frame drops so far. Falling through the floor and having people spawn from the ground are just silly.

Even with that the game is pretty awesome, I'm having a blast. Best Assassin's Creed in a very long time.

Pc version fine for me since 1.2 patch. Getting 40-60fps on a 970. There's the occasional juddering npc but, generally speaking, it's probably the best game graphically I've seen. Gameplay wise I think it's a marked improvement for the series so far too.

I don't think this is spoilerish but there is a point in the game where there are no npc's in the city and the framerate is fine (on console).
The amount of npc's is definitely the main problem with the framerate, the game doesn't need that many people. Halving the amount of people would still mean a high amount of npc's but would probably of improved the framerate greatly.

Since we aren't dealing with scenes crammed with NPCs in these instances, it's hard to see what exactly is causing the PS4 to be hit so hard - the difference cannot be explained by the 10 per cent boost in CPU clock-speed on the Xbox One, perhaps suggesting that the underlying netcode issues are more to blame here.

Holy shit! So not only is it broken janky mess but it's a broken janky mess because of net code! Why? Because UbiSoft insist on shoveling BS "micro" transactions and forced app checks to open damn chests. Are you kidding me right now?!?

You can't make this shit up.

Dat parity oh wait. I picked up two copies of this (1XB1, 1 PS4) and it's interesting tbh.

Even with that the game is pretty awesome, I'm having a blast. Best Assassin's Creed in a very long time.

Agreed, I'm liking it a lot more than ACIVBF and ACIII.

damn ubi giving the finger to ps4 owners. bigger user base, 40% more powerful hardware, yet the game runs much worse on ps4 with out any graphical advantages.

Ubisoft botched the graphics engine for Unity. Poor performance on every platform. Poor anti-aliasing solutions on the consoles with blurry upscaled graphics.

Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, but Unity on the consoles doesn't compete with the best looking next-gen games (Ryse, KZ:SF, Infamous:SS). Heck, GTA V is arguably better looking.

Yeah the only thing these NPCs do is stand in the way while running.

No. Article makes it clear PC > XB1> PS4.

Yup.
On consoles :
Very high environment (goes up to ultra on PC)
Medium/high textures (according to DF, goes up to ultra on PC).
High shadows (no PCSS)
SSAO (no HBAO+)
No tessellation (will come to PC in a future update).
900p capped.

And for 30fps + better visuals you don't need a monster of a PC at all.

Holy shit! So not only is it broken but it's broken because of pointless net code in a single player experience. Why? Because UbiSoft insist on shoveling BS "micro" transactions and forced app checks to open damn chests. Are you kidding me right now?!?

That's not about the SP mode.

Really excited to try this at some point, hoping to see some nice deals at the end of the month

Also, I'm wondering how the game would perform wuth a GTX750ti at 900p, FXAA, Very High Environment and High textures... just as console version setting.

This game is the perfect example of why I want nothing to do with PC. My PC is light years more powerful than consoles, but the performance I get is barely better and in many cases worse than consoles.

Running the game offline totally fixes the problem guys

*sighs* feels odd not playing a assassins creed game this year and what played at mates house Rogue is just terrible but suppose it works

Honestly, this is a really fun game. Don't let this article sway your decision to buy it if you're on the fence, especially you AC fans.
