[Digital Foundry] Flight Simulator Hands-On

So, with this amazing global map with cloud based data transfer, can we get "Forza World", a collaboration between Asobo, Turn 10, and Playground. Pretty please Microsoft?

Drive the entire world (Playground), including to, from, and including race tracks (Turn 10), with real time weather and time of day (Asobo).

You can't get much more open-world than the entire planet can you?
 
Next-Gen needs to work on their animation. The planes move like they are on strings.

Its not coming the same day as PC which is what you are seeing. They have only confirmed its an Xbox game as well. I have a feeling itll be a launch game for XSX.

If this a launch game for Series X I'll be shocked. Why keep this info hidden? The real question is how long will it take to come to Xbox and will it come out on Xbox's not named Series X? I'm thinking Summer '21 and No!

Well.. this game/sim doesn't exacly rape the framebuffer;-) "Calm" scenes are always easier to scale than "caotic" ones. It's not that much different going on on a frame to frame basis.
It looks beautiful tho' and I can't wait to try it out!

It looks so nice, I just wish you did more than fly commercial planes that don't have 70 middles strapped to them. Give this groundwork to the Ace Combat Dev team.
 
It would be incredible if some other games - simulators - would also use this world of Microsoft Flight Simulator for maps, traffic etc. Then eventually transform it into MMO and we would have millions of real players exploring the world.
 
this is for all intens and purposes a pc exclusive. Makes sense they didnt show it in a console show
Was it a console show? I haven't seen anything that indicates that anything was running on Xbox Series X. I have seen everything that indicates that everything shown was running on PC. It is just stupid marketing to not show this. I have seen many people that don't know that this exists. It was a GamePass show and they should have shown everything ready to come to GamePass.

A lot of people on these threads assume that there are no PC exclusives. Well, we got one and it's a doozy. I don't even see CyberPunk matching the fidelity. The HB2 trailer did but that was cinematics. This sim looks even better than the UE5 demo.

Its coming to Xbox one? Also what fidelity are you talking about? Cities look great at a distance and the streaming is very impressive tech, but the moment you get close its another story. You realize that right?

Why is it running worse on AMD ?

My PC is AMD im not happy with this

They're running physics simulations on the planes. These simulations tend to work better with better single core performance. That's where Intel CPUs perform better than AMD CPUs. But I think with the new Ryzen things will be a lot better.

This game is doing amazing stuff but I think you're comparing apples and oranges. The really next gen stuff is the tech stack they're using. They're actually making good use of cloud services by streaming in assets, Bing maps finally has a reason to exist, machine learning models used for procedural generation, live streaming in real time weather and aircraft paths. This is the next gen stuff but a lot of this is offline.

Its announced for Xbox One and One X and they havent announced the launch line up for Series X/S yet. Believe thats in the August event. A few games that have been on PC such as this and Gears Tactics both have also been announced for Xbox One and I suspect that to help bolster the launch window for XSX they will hit sooner rather than later.
 
If 2080ti had problems, it won't be any better on RDNA 2 cards
According to the video, the 2080 Ti was struggling on Ultra, but the frame rate stabilised on High. So they can drop down to High and lock the frame rate to 30. Or keep the 60 refresh, but drop the resolution from 4K.

Other games are frankly kiddy shit in comparison.

This is genuinely spectacular.

I need a War game using this technology.
 
I'm so glad you can turn the simulation aspect right down and basically pick a plane and go exploring the planet.
Going to spend so many hours in this incredible looking game.
 
This is single handedly the most impressive next-gen footage I've seen. This is the first thing that made me genuinely think "wow, that can't be done this gen".
 


  • Map streamed by the Azure cloud service is several petabytes worth of data
  • Terrain generation, skies and clouds of unprecedented quality
  • Very heavy on hardware. 2080 Ti/4K/Ultra settings nets around 30-40fps
  • Scales very well with lower settings
  • CPU-bound at around 70-80fps on Ultra
  • Currently, AMD GPU's performs much worse
  • 10+ hours of play-time used around 7GB of data

Are there jet fighters in the game? Cool tech.
 
Judging from the tests Alex did, i should get around 60fps at 1080p medium on my PC, but i think i'll lock the game to 30fps, using Rivatuner, and go for 1080p High/Ultra. 30fps will be more than good enough for a slower game like this, and get that next gen goodness!.
 
So 2080TI strugle to run this game on Ultra

Any news when the 3080 dropping by?

To be fair, we're talking about Ultra at 4K here.. I mean, historically you had to wait something like 5-10 years to run MSFS on the highest setting :)

Damn, this looks terrific. I had only a passing interest in this, but I may give it a shot. It sounds like it has a decent filthy casual mode where I can just grab a controller and take in the sights, so that definitely piques my interest.
 
Also, I had no idea the developers of Plague Tale were behind this. They're about as indie as indie gets for a team with such impressive visual chops. Seeing them button up their suits and sit down with Microsoft for Flight Simulator is quite... odd.

They deserve all their success, though. Plague Tale looked fantastic, and was a great game, and this one is pushing tech boundaries further than people ever thought possible.

I would love to have a mode where planes control like in GTA basically, just to fuck around.

But some preview mentioned that even the most assisted mode isn't quiet that arcadey.

There are stunt planes tho and I imagine they should control quiet light in easy mode.
 
Quick fiery death seems pretty good given the alternatives of cancer, choking on a sandwich or dying on the toilet trying to force out brick.
Well dying of cancer on a toilet, choking on a sandwhich while while trying to squeeze out a brick is much worse than a plane crash.

The lighting in this game and the attention to detail is really something else. How technical is this game? Would this be like a hardcore racing sim?
