[Digital Foundry] New Scorpio Spec Leak: ESRAM Gone, GPU Features Revealed

Yup again this machine will have 6+ Teraflops of raw gpu power, newer architecture, 12gb ram, 320gb/s memory bandwidth, and a stronger CPU no matter what type it is

There's already hints of a new dashboard too can't wait to see the entire package soon :)

Not to be difficult, but it is not confirmed to have 12gb ram, even if a picture of the architecture has been released. Everything else is true, though :)

Were back to next gen talk again? Scorpio is next gen, it's just not dropping XB1 as an anchor yet. Three or four years after Scorpio is out a new Xbox will be made and XB1 support will officially stop, but games will work on Scorpio and the next Xbox. I guess if you want to call the point where XB1 support is dropped as next gen then ok, but there will probably never be another clean break.

No Xbox Scorpio loose lips yet. Where they stunned into silence. Still stuck in a moment of Zen.

I really liked lips! Mics were awesome.

I expect the article Monday to confirm something small and not huge. Basically something we already know, but hasn't been confirmed.

Can't wait to see if they'll have any games for it.

i love this one and it's not a exclusive but no other console can do it!

What do you mean "no other console can do it?" It's coming to the original Xbox One and PS4, and while it's not unreasonable to assume that it'll be enhanced for Scorpio at some point, the game is almost certainly shipping months before the new console launches. Color me confused.

I do think it's reasonable to expect Scorpio to be a pretty compelling piece of hardware and to point out that software is the biggest open question. Archictural details will be interesting, but they won't contribute to success as directly as a killer app or two.

Newer architecture and stronger CPU? Did we have any confirmation?

12gb of ram in not confirmed, but Phil hinted that the amount will be different than whats on the current system.

Phil:
"The box is more powerful than just a 6 (as in 6TF). When you look at the memory bandwidth, when you look at the amount of ram, when you look at other things. Your looking for the balance in the system."

New Dashboard? Where are the hints? I find it hard to believe they'd do all the work on the Xbox One's current dashboard and be working on a new one in parallel.

I also don't think that the OS will be significant different. Perhaps slight differences that perhaps reflect more computational power (meaning more stuff going on) but at its core it will most likely be the same.

A pity. Now would be the perfect time for a refresh.

I am not arguing against a refresh but against a difference between the interface that the One has and what Scorpio gets. If there is a refresh to Scorpio, it will most likely also apply to the bone as this shouldn't be highly dependent on the underlying hardware.

I dunno..based on the comments from that windows dev it sounds like a completely new from the ground up OS that takes full advantage of Scorpios extra horsepower. I'm not being optimistic either that's the genuine impression I got from the quote.

Of course it will, perhaps I wasn't specific in terms of os. Of course the hypervisor will be adjusted and thus GameOS will of course have access to the additional resources. What I am doubting is that OtherOs will be so much different to the bone os as the user interface wouldn't benefit much of it (yes, the current ui seems slow but this seems rather network related and not computing performance related).

I can't find it but it essentially said he was excited to utilize Scopios extra power in building the new dashboard (new effects, animation etc)..or something close to that.

Ah ok, yeah I misunderstood you.

anyone else barely used their Xbox
I think I have around 150h max in all these years
but is totally down for the Scorpio and looking forward to it?

Yes!

I flogged my launch XB1 which is something I never do. I usually give my consoles away at the end of the generation. Now I have no consoles. But Scorpio looks decent and should have games at launch which are right up my street. Namely Forza, Crackdown and State Of Decay. Then RDR2 and whatever else on the 3rd party side.

With Switch being decent too this gen is finally warming up for me which for me has so far been the worst in history.

I was also going to get a PSPro but might just wait until PS5 so there's lots of games to play at launch, as it should be back compat. But if Spiderman is great I might crack if they dont gimp the swinging!

Patiently waiting for Jez to drop the bombs /s

Jez was was a podcast from true achievements and it seemed that he has a list of 3rd party games that will be launching "with Scorpio" or Scorpio ready. That may be the news. He said he wanted more confirmation before saying anything.

I would say to listen to Xbox Central podcast... it's on Windows Central site

Yeah, I think there was also a hint that he was aware of some of the 'native 4K' titles that would release also

A lot of weight is riding on Scorpio's shoulders, i don't think Native 4k will be enough to distance it from the ps4 pro and 60fps seems to be out of the question if the cpu isn't up to par.

imo if the scorpio targets all games in 2160p checkerboard and include exclusive scorpio console effects like vxao, tessellation, higer quality depth of field, better lighting, better textures (pretty much a given with 12gb ram), better draw distance. That will make all games noticeably stand out rather than xbox one level of visuals at native 4k.

I would love to see scorpio exclusive effects maybe only in 1080p mode that supports voxel global illumination. That would get a lot of people interested.

Jez seems like a good dude but I wouldn't go hoping that they are going to blow the lid off of what Scorpio is or what it isn't.

He might have info about which games are getting patched but I dont see him having any info on the specs, yet.

this would satisfy me tbh

Podcast was released an hour ago and there's no mention of it, in the description anyway.

I just listened to the podcast and he just says the same thing again...that he has some news regarding Scorpio, just waiting on hearing it from other sources and will release it sometime this week. He did say that it will excite some people and others it won't. So I would dial down the hype meter. He says this in like the last 2 or 3 minutes of the podcast.

Jez is probably just going to throw around some Graphical settings he heard about games that will run on the Scorpio most likely. Waiting for a 2nd source to confirm is my guess on the wait. (since the first source told him the info)

Did they even do the Sony thing of enforcing that devs can't make superior versions on Scorpio? I mean obviously it's in their best interests to make a good version for XB1, but you'll get significant increases in performance with this thing. How can they not take full advantage?

Sony cant do that...

Can they?

yo, i just seen that twitter updated their webpage so that if you are not signed up and logged in, you cannot view their tweets + replies. The time of me stalking phil's replies, mat ybarras replies, and other heads of entertainment business is over!

It's good that MS are seemingly ahead of schedule with the Scorpio hardware. Hopefully that means all devs are going to get a good 6 months of time to prepare their games for this holiday.

Crank those sliders up, if Red Dead doesn't have one extra Horse turd in the distance compared to other platforms I will be pissed!

Maybe with games they have marketing deals with? Red Dead, CoD, Battlefront, Destiny 2. Not saying the Scorpio versions won't be superior but why would those studios spend extra time and resources on trying to patch the Scorpio versions to look that much better than the PS4 Pro versions besides a resolution bump?
