Resident Evil 3 Remake Demo: What's Up With Xbox One X? All Versions Tested

"Capcom continues its excellent work in remaking its Resident Evil series - and not for the first time, it manages to balance the move to new technology with respect to the original. Oddly enough, the Xbox One X version sees changes in the way it performs, at least for this demo, raising questions about how it'll run come release. "

Maybe 30%? Even if so, none can save them (PS4/XBX) from Jaguar curse.
Its 40% and PS4 uses the same Jaguar cpu. In fact, the X1X has a better cpu than the Pro.

This is a case where the PS4 version was priority one due to higher install base. I expect the XB1X version is a little behind and hopefully gets fixed before final release or via a patch soon after. RE2 was superior on XB1X.

Yes. That's a known fact by now. Point being?
The difference between the two versions 1620p vs 4k both are using a CB technique.
But X1X performance suffers at the cost of the higher Resolution.
I'm confused why they didn't use that 40% to keep a locked frame rate instead of pushing higher and having the framerate suffer.
Surely 1800p would have been better?

  • The game is always powered by the RE Engine.
  • The HDR is excellent when it is well calibrated. It is one of the best implementations of this generation for DF.
  • The XBO X version suffers from quite significant drops of up to 40fps in game and 30fps on cinematics, it is sometimes even below the base PS4.
  • The PS4 Pro version is the smoothest of all, often at 60fps with small in-game drops. In the cinematics it can go down to 50fps.
  • The XBO version is the worst performing version.
  • The XBO X goes from 1620p from RE2 in 4K resolution to RE3 with reconstruction elements.
  • The XBO X displays more pixels than the PS4 Pro but the result is not perfect.
  • The PS4 Pro version is in 1620p as it was on RE2 Remake with reconstruction elements.
  • The PS4 version runs in 1080p native.
  • The XBO is in 900p~1080p dynamic resolution.
  • The resolution is related to the breakup of pixels in the hair so : X > Pro > PS4 > XBO.
  • By design, the game is more taxing than RE2.
  • The X version has a sharper DoF bokeh visible in the cutscenes and better shadows compared to the other versions.

The OneX is obviously a badly made console, and proves that specs dont mean anything. Power is overrated..
its a simple case of the bigger install base version (PS4) being more optimized at this point. Read all the tech articles on XB1X being praised. Power does matter. Look at RDR2, or the majority of DF head to head articles where many XB1X games are running at significantly higher resolutions with higher settings versus the Pro. Pro rarely ever even hits native 4K. It's why many Pro versions of games only hit 1080p

There is 'no better CPU', unless they're using different cpu. Both are Jaguar. But but clock, no dude. Jaguar is Jaguar.

You could and should read the article. Xbox One X have less perfomance than base Xbox. They need to reduce resolution on Xbox One X just at point of not trash perfomance.

I was breing sarcastic lol, of course power matters.

Wasn't XB1X native with RE2?

Look at the spec sheets for the XB1X and Pro. XB1X has the better Cpu. No? No kidding Sherlock. That's why I mentioned that the XB!X version needs more optimization.

Japanese dev of course.

Capcom is undoubtedly the best Japanese publisher of this generation.

If the X doesn't manage to maintain 60fps it's not because of the capcom developers but because of the 4K at all costs, while the console also has its limits.

You have to choose either the 4k or the 60fps, but both at the same time you can forget about

What an odd sentance. It's like the changes could be some positive changes somehow. Usually they say: The worst performing version or something very negative. But here they succedded in staying neutral...when they really shouldn't have as it performs very badly.

I really hope they'll fix the performance issues on XIX, it's really grating. That's weird, RE2 was silky-smooth on it :-/

If not, well, PS4Pro version it is.

it and Code Veronica are the only RE games I've never played. I very rarely get scared by anything and an not reactionary to jump scares and such, but Mr. X really made me feel tense in the RE2 remake, if it's true RE3 is going to be a LOT of that even in safe rooms I'm not quite sure I'll enjoy it.

If you liked Mr X, you will love Nemesis lol. And likewise unfortunately, if you hated MrX in the RE2 Remake, you will probably despise Nemesis in RE3.

Think I'll wait a little bit until after launch to see which version is better once we have the retail release. Just bizarre the XboneX version seems to be kind of weak.

I'll still get it, I'm just so unused to actually being effected by a video game in that way.

Out of the games I've been interested in/bought this gen, there's only a handful I can think of where not having an enhanced console was a huge disadvantage. Glad I decided to skip the One X and wait for next gen; at least the SX should be able to play these games in a significantly upgraded manner, instead of just being "good enough."

It all comes down to prioritizing. X1x is the sub-segment hardware of the least successful console this gen. Of course devs won't pay the same attention to it as to base ps4.

Did anybody else notice on the RE:3 demo that the PS4 pro version was the only one that utilized Dolby Vision for HDR? I was really surprised when my TV let me know it was enabled. There was quite a difference when comparing the PS4 version with Dolby Vision to the xbox 1x version that only ran standard HDR10. I did calibrate the x version for best visual experience with its HDR implementation and it looks great but the dolby vision on the PS4 was absolutely stunning. The smooth frames on the PS4 and Dolby Vision was a no brainer for me on which one to get.

Ill pick this up eventually on the PS4 as I own most REs on that system lol

This does actually bring up a significant concern for next gen for me...

we know both consoles are beasts pushing well above the current gpu/CPU limit, XseX and PSV will be monsters, but with the improved lighting, models, RT, effects etc will extreme resolution 4k to 8k be a priority at the expense of framerates?

We know the Jaguar CPUs in the current gen are a detriment, we also know with enough dev time even amazing looking games can push the res/fr obstacle effectively (RDR2 on X IE), but for some reason both Sony and MS seem to think resolution should trump a solid frame rate almost every time...

Both the Pro and X have suffered at times (mostly third party) due to this...

I don't know what your TV might have smoked, but the game does not support Dolby Vision on the Pro. In fact, the Pro does not support Dolby Vision at all.

Hey you are right (thanks for confirming!!), I checked on that and what you say is true. I game on a 55'' TCL Q-LED 6-series TV and whenever I launch the RE:3 demo the dolby vision status pops up followed by HDR shortly after. I rebooted my TV and this behavior no longer persists, I just get HDR status when launching the game. This was a bug then with my TV. Both versions look good but the PS4 version seemed to have more inky blacks and natural looking lighting compared to the xbox version, I had to really calibrate the xbox version to get it to look good, such as turning down my backlight settings on my TV and other recommended settings in the xbox calibration wizard/tool. Turning my backlight up any higher on my TV the blacks would start to look more grey and image in general washed out but if I turned it down too much it was just too dim and the lighting no longer looked as natural. I just felt that on the PS4 it seemed like the most optimal experience for me right out of the box without having to dick around with my TV settings.

Did anybody else notice this also when trying to compare the two versions, while close the PS4 version seemed to be a bit more spot on with the lighting?

DF states this demo is probably from a older build. I wouldn't jump the gun yet. I'm sure the XB1X framerate will be fixed in time by release or via a patch soon after release. I would wait.RE2 was best on XB1X.

I was already getting the game because of how good RE2 was, but I am pretty damn pumped after playing the demo. It looks like this will be another great job by Capcom.

Would be nice if the next time they also push out like a high end PC system how it performs on there for comparison sake.

To be honest I could not see a difference HDR wise, unfortunately both versions are gray instead of black exactly how RE2 was. I'm playing on a 65' LG C8 using PC mode as recommended by Rtings.com.
