Digital Foundry - Resident Evil Code Veronica X PS4 (PS2 Emulated) Tested

The PAL Dreamcast version of RECV actually did not have a 60hz option, but it was optimised and ran better than this shit does.

The PAL Dreamcast versions of RE2 and RE3 thankfully did have 60hz, so maybe that's what you're remembering.

No, Sony's attitude towards giving customers 60hz is a joke, and always has been.

However the emulation of PS2 games on PS4 (in NTSC at least) is fair.

I own CV and RE2 on dreamcast so maybe I am mixing them up. I remember a lot of ps2 games not having options compared to many dreamcast games.

50 hz?

I sympathise with anyone who bought this and got stuck with a poor PAL conversion of the game. That said, I'd easily recommend this to anyone with access to the US PS Store. It looks, runs, and plays great. Moreover, I would say it's better looking than the remaster. Those saying they want that version instead likely haven't done any comparisons between it and the older versions. The remaster does indeed run in proper 16:9, but it also completely retooled the lighting, and IMO, it was a change for the worse, making the game incredibly dark and murky looking.

In contrast, whilst this release is stuck in a 4:3 aspect ratio, it looks much brighter, cleaner and sharper than the remaster. It also offers better quality FMV's than that version as well, with no framerate issues or choppiness, unlike the remaster.

My only complaints are the motion blur DF pointed out, which is distracting at times, and that the game is very slightly horizontally stretched. Is that due to the emulator? I never encountered that issue with PS2 Classics on PS3, and it does detract from the visuals a bit for me, making everything appear just a bit wider than it did on PS2.

I really regret buying this in the EU Store without researching first. I guess that's what I get for being a loyal fan who purchases things blindly ÂŻ\_(ツ)_/ÂŻ

Don't feel like paying for the game twice, which is what would happen if I bought the US-version now ]:

What are the odds of Capcom fixing this release? If any?

Well said. I'm quite fond of the new lighting in some areas of the HD version, and it still plays great, but generally speaking the original releases were better.

dunno, that didn't bother me in 2001 (I have a PAL PS2 copy).

But your TV back then most likely operated at 50Hz, or had the option to. Since TVs went digital/HD, they have universally ran at 60Hz. The PlayStation 4 is unable to out 50Hz, and thus screen judder is introduced that wasn't present in the original. It's pretty unacceptable in this day and age to release it in such a poor state.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this game unoptimised 50Hz? So what's stopping them from forcing it into 60Hz?

Based on a quick test with PCSX2, nothing. The PAL version of Code Veronica X appears to run just fine with the framerate boosted to 60Hz. No speed or timing anomalies that I can detect. The only possible adverse side effect (that I didn't really properly test) was juddering in the FMV sequences, but better that than juddering throughout the entire game.

I feel like Code Veronica should have gotten the same treatment as Resident Evil 4, 5, 6, and presumably, Revelaitons. A physical disc production and 1080p port. Capcom has so many ps2 games that would be great releases, games that would never get the tender love and care of a big earning series like Resident Evil.

I feel like leverybody on GAF would buy a PS2 to PS4 port of God Hand.

It would be interesting if DF did a Face-Off between this and the PS3/360 HD version.

There's very little to do a full comparison between those versions. Texture resolution/character models are exactly the same. The only thing the PS360 remaster changed was a different lighting engine and wide screen. They both run at a capped 30 FPS.

Otherwise they are still the exact same game.

No thank you.

I don't even understand why Capcom didn't bother porting the remaster, they fucking remastered most of their RE games this gen...0-REmake-4-5-6 and REV 1-2 and they're remaking RE2.
