Digital Foundry - Tech Analysis: Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae

But then the thing would come out as a $60 game for what people ultimately will view as a PSP remaster, and people would have to wait months for the demo. That wouldn't sell as much what we have now.

Well it probably paid off more so then if they held out until summer.

I mean sure the demo may have been rushed, but I figure people would more inclined to buy Type-0 HD on day one if they could get the demo immediately even if they don't care about Type-0, rather then people buying Type-0 at launch and needing to wait a few months and then get access to a non-rushed demo.

It's a catch 22 for Square-Enix in this case. We all know that the Demo is representative of an incomplete product, barely a taste for things to come. So it would make sense of SE releasing the demo earlier than usual and push more sales for Type-0 as a sound business decision.

Well I'm worried about this myself tbh.

Then again if ditching XB meant more games(shorter dev cycle) I wouldn't be as upset. A bit but in the end I think my selfish side would win.

There is a reason why there is no FFX port on Xbox one. If there is a Kingdom heats PS4 port and not a xbone port before KH3 that will be the final nail in the coffin for serious SE xbone support (New games not FF, KH, or edios games). People say that they will obviously put all their games on xbox one because of its significant install base that does not matter if the install base does not buy the type of games SE makes as much.

It's as the pictures showed. More importantly, this demo shows that previous showings of the game were bollocks.

They're just different builds. The october build definitely looked better than the demo, but it also probably wasn't as stable for a playable combat-focused release. The rushed demo doesn't prove previous footage were bullshots.

SE have been pretty upfront and released some terrible PR screenshots from their trailers. Episode Duscae looks considerably better than these old screens when XV was revealed.

(The hair isn't even dithered below, but there's a crap ton of specular shimmering. Just differeint build priorities.)

I disagree, you can see jaggies and shimmering in the trailers, yes, but the detail was turned up in other things, most noticeably vegetation and the resolution of the characters' hair, which is hideously low-res in the demo.

Then again this may show that Squeenix is again using pre-rendered video for "real-time" cut-scenes in the game, like in FFXIII. IQ is also pristine here.
I'm not 100% sure but I also think the particle effects were higher-res.

Again, I'm pretty sure that was just due to different builds, as you can still see hair dithering in that pic that wouldn't be in a pre-rendered scene. The Jump Festa trailer showed a cutscene of Cidney where the hair dithering looked worse compared to Noctis' scene. Highly doubt the hair is fully optimized considering how much work they're putting into it, just like the rest of the graphics.

Here's the demo.

The framerate sure is dissapointing, but this is one of the few instances were the game seems to be far enough from release for me to belive this really is an early build and there is still a lot of work to be done on optimization later on

Why did they even bother with such an unfinished tech demo? It's going to be probably totally different when it actually comes out...Like over a year out, maybe two. Yeah it looks rough now but it's certainly going to improve.

TBH I'd even be fine if they just got the framerate to a steady 30 and made the hair not so dithery, graphics-wise (although I'm pretty sure we'll see nicer improvements than just those in the final game).

Also dat Cindy pic^

Nevermind the image quality or the framerate, what's up with the game? Overlong, pointless, horribly acted cutscenes aren't exactly inspiring.

The game is still likely a year and a half out, I'm amazed it's running as well and looks as good in the shape it's in. Obviously the ps4 version will be sharper, that's coming from someone who played and loved the demo on the x1.

I guess it's unfair to say it was bullshit, who knows what kind of optimization has been going on behind the scenes, but the JF and TGS trailers did look better.

Some comments here feel like they're jumping the gun and also show they've not read the full article. Seems on PS4 anyway the game will reach 1080p with a decent frame rate without too much problem. The game is well over a year away and graphics optimisation happens at the last minute anyway. Seems like a pretty solid foundation, it looks great.

Remember how much Driveclub I'm over in the space of a few months. Let's not get our knickers in a twist here :p

Something people seem to not be mentioning for some reason. GPGPU INFAMOUS PARTICLES! :D

Seriously seeing all those particles flying around both from the fire and the dispersing of the summoning after Ramuh summoning is just something you literally could not see last gen. Next gen level shit especially at night

It sure won't be 8 months, absolutely, but how much more than 12? There have to be bean counters praying for fiscal 15/16, surely?

Like I say, better, sure... Longer, sure... But longer enough for it to be dramatic, I'm not convinced.

Well going by the October footage they have already got the engine running at higher fidelity (that build still needed some serious optimisation in terms of AA and LoD), so I think they have time to optimise further to get more out of the engine.

Think that the fact that SE published it in EU has something to do with. Same for the first KH. So I don't really see it(the complete collection) coming to anything else. I don't think Sony would make the Bandicoot mistake again......
Come The fuck on Acti, just give me a sweet sweet Crash game again you dirty sobs....Please?
But yes, it's a possibility, pulling their "Japanese games", and I don't think it's worth it for MS to pay for games, at least not for any Japanese RPGS. And I don't think SE are stupid enough to try that. We're more likely to see a new high profile rpg from them on the Vita aimed for us in the West :|

Btw, if you ever buy grilled chicken from a store make sure not to eat it in the dark so you'll notice straight away if that shit is undercooked. Been puking my guts out for a few hours now and just waiting till the store opens tomorrow so o can ram what's left up that fucking assholes asshole that sold it to me. Fucking dickbag didn't even season it correctly and of it wasn't for the copious amount of garlic and "secret spice" I would probably have been able to taste the undercooked shit straight away.

I was wondering this as well. What's the point? They even mentioned that the developers have said this isn't even close to finished yet.

I was kinda waiting for this, actually. I was curious what resolution and framerate things were running at, because honestly, this game looks fucking incredible, IMO, and the fact that it will look and run better on release is just icing on the cake.

Yes, this game looks pretty outdated. And not just in terms of resolution. Previous FFs always had a little bit of a wow-factor, but I am not seeing anything impressive here.

edit: I know it is early, but it is FF, so I expect a lot.

Did you even read the article?

I think everyone else would say the game looks really good barring the texture filtering, Resolution and frame rate.

Lots of pretty amazing things in the demo from a technical level, and the freedom should make you go "wow" a little after what Square has been doing with the franchise lately.

Ultimately, Final Fantasy 15 Episode Duscae is an impressive preview of what's to come, limited only by the unfinished, unoptimised nature of its rendering technology. The engine displays all of the expected next-generation features while bringing its own unique flavour to the experience. As Square-Enix's first internally developed open world game, the attention to detail really is remarkable and easily comparable to the best from Rockstar. Compared to other sandbox fantasy games from the last few years, Final Fantasy 15 really feels like a true next-generation leap.

yeah and I as much as I love the demo I disagree with that part. There is vey little detail in the world. its all empty really. the same trees, the same grass, a few signs and a few simple buildings.

its the lighting that makes all really come to life.

Speed tree at its finest.

I noticed that. It kind of bothered me to be honest. Like they just took a copy/paste tool and called it a day.

I took a screen from PS4 version, it's actually not THAT worse.

it's clear that they're making the game on PS4 and then porting it on Xbox which has also lower specs.

Isn't this game being developed on PC first? Though we may never see an actual PC release, wouldn't that mean they would be able to run the game at higher resolutions and filtering presets and demonstrate those at press events?

All of the Luminous Tech demos so far have been running on PC, so I wouldn't doubt that the trailer footage released so far has been from the PC version of the engine.

"Final Fantasy XV is being created at a quality higher than next-gen consoles are capable of, and the game is being ported down to consoles capable of running DirectX 11. Nomura specifically says that Square Enix will consider releasing the game for other hardware capable of running DirectX 11 as well."

How many solid-60fps (or 30, really) open world games are there on consoles? FXAA's not great but it's only the texture filtering that looks bad.
MGSV doesn't seem to have fancy architectures, crowded cities, party of four people, or giant summons firing lightning bolts from the sky. If Fox Engine can pull off FFXV at 1080p/60, then it's amazing.

Nevermind the image quality or the framerate, what's up with the game? Overlong, pointless, horribly acted cutscenes aren't exactly inspiring.
I've played the demo and the graphics are the least of this game's problems. You won't be awake long enough to count pixels if the final game is as boring as episode Duscae.
Wrong topic guys.

I have a feeling that the demo is going to be a good representation of the final game unless it spends another decade in development.

I imagine the X1 version will be an after thought made to cash in on what little fans there are. I'm honestly surprised they're still going with it, KH3 will bomb ever harder on X1.

I do wonder if SE ever tried to go to Sony and ask if they would moneyhat exclusivity as that would probably make them more than what they could likely count on from xbone sales. It would absolutely suck for fans but I'm guessing it would probably make business sense.

When hardware is so similar, and when the AAA market is as competitive/cut-throat as it is right now, especially for Japanese developers, you don't go about surviving that by cutting off revenue streams.

If they did, Sony probably turned them down. why bother spending a cent when the game will still run better, sell better, and be identified as a Playstation game regardless.

heh, as if there are any FF/JRPG fans that play exclusively on xbox.

Even if it's only ~15% to 20% of consumers that's still a significant chunk of change for SE. You can't pick and choose when you're in SE's situation, you take what you can get.

About what I expected. Considering the final version is probably about a year away, it should be about up to par by launch. Heck, still looks fairly pretty now for the most part.

Also, people need to remember, optimization comes fairly late in the development cycle.

heh, as if there are any FF/JRPG fans that play exclusively on xbox.

I was at one point before I got a PS3.

My first experience with FFXIII was on the 360, then there was Star Ocean 4, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Magna Carta 2, Resonance of Fate, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, and lets not forget Tales of Vesperia.

All of these are JRPGs on the 360 and a significant portion of them were / still are exclusive to the 360 before ports were made to PC and PS3.

Both the PS4 and XB1 are on x86, so Square will sell more copies of FFXV and KH3 on the PS4 and XB1 as opposed to the PS4 alone, it's not a worthless effort.

Regardless I don't own an XB1, so I'll be picking up the PS4 version, but that still doesn't discredit the XB1 version from existing.

Hell, I'm having flashbacks when FFXIII was announced for the 360 and many were up in arms about it because it wasn't a PS3 exclusive as initially announced, and let me tell you this isn't a pleasant memory to be reminded of. I care not for console wars or platform specific loyalty. If people want to enjoy a game, outside of first party exclusives, then they should have the right of it to do so regardless of what platform they prefer.

Yea, I think its easy to forget that for a long while, the 360 was the place to be for JRPG's(and RPG's in general).

Also, I'm sure the final release will be in a better state than this, cuz this will have cutbacks made purely to get a playable build out, but I don't think its safe to assume that its going to be hitting 1080p or a solid 30fps on any of the consoles, either. It does look as if they are doing some impressive things with the graphics and combined with a large, open-ish world environment, it could prove limiting.

The amount of games we've seen that do not match early showcase footage or screenshots(particularly with multiplatform games) should have taught us that optimization is not some miracle process that occurs and everything is suddenly better. There are constant compromises that get made in the process. Resolution may well still be one of them in the end. Or performance. Or other things.
