Digital Foundry: Uncharted 4 on PS4 Pro: How Much Of An Upgrade Is It?

John takes a look at Uncharted 4 on PS4 Pro. It's still the most technologically advanced game on the PlayStation 4 - but can the same be said for its Pro upgrade?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsiqSUe4MhI

- same Performance as on standard PS4 with 30fps 99% of the time in SP, almost locked 60fps in MP too
- resolution bump to 1440p in SP, 1080p in MP
- subtile visual changes (lightning) -> Example1, Example2
- improved loading times
- HDR works quite well on both systems

Still looks great, but can't really notice that much of difference, especially on youtube. Hopefully they take more advantage of the pro with the SP dlc, I'll probably be upgrading around the time it releases.

On my 4K HDR TV it definetly looks more clean, you can notice a lot of vegetation details in the long distance that you couldn't notice before. But it's not night and day.
HDR is stunning on elements like the sky.

I noticed more detail and less blur on Pro but as it looked great already not a huge difference. HDR was huge though! The Madagascar level with HDR was insane! Gone were the over saturated colors and now it had very realistic colors. Amazing!

Why have they stopped doing articles with full resolution images??
Those image comparisons were actually useful for this, these videos especially on YouTube show very little difference.

DF haven't done many articles with screenshots lately. Pro screenshot comparisons are like rocking horse shit.

From the outside looking in it seems like they dropped the ball and missed an obvious opportunity to have UC4 be the title that sells everyone on the PS4 Pro. Now I'm no expert but the base game seem to run pretty well so theoretically they should have had more headroom to work with than the marginal increase in IQ we currently have. Hardly anyone is talking about this game in terms of its Pro upgrade and it's been easily overshadowed by the likes of CoD and Ratchet. Multiplayer actually received a much more pronounced boost going from 900p to native 1080p but the player base for that is pretty miniscule.

Hopefully there's another patch on the way to push the game further.

It was TLOU the game where they were probably looking into frame rate again.
Not Uncharted 4.

Cerny did mention that they were retooling U4 before the Pro launched but no one knows if what they did at 1440p is the retooled version or just a stop gap for launch.

I watched this vid on a 1080p TV at my regular gaming distance and I couldn't see a single difference in terms of image quality during the campaign. I guess that speaks volumes on ND's TAA solution.

Multiplayer looks considerably better though, much sharper and cleaner.

Yes it's a shame that the written portion of DF seems to have stopped.

I think that sadly the retooling in this case was a downgrade from 1800p checkerboard to 1440p to match the OG PS4 framerate.
Of course if that's not the case and they are still working on improving it we'll hear more news, especially when they announce the DLC.

So , Mp is more stable.
Loading during SP is faster
And HDR is in + the bump in resolution

It's very good , as a regular player of Uncharted Mp .. this is great.

So Sony is straight up lying on the PSN Store web page?

PS4 PRO ENHANCED:
- PS4 Pro HD
- Greater Draw Distance
- Anti-Aliasing
- Visual FX
- Vivid Textures
- Deep Shadows
- High Fidelity Assets
- HDR

DF is saying the only thing improved is the resolution.

Biggest benefactor of Uncharted 4's Pro patch is the multiplayer. Significant improvement in picture quality and framerate. It just feels smoother because now it's 60FPS 99% of the time, where as before it was maybe 90% of the time.

No that's not what they are saying.
It has a better resolution , HDR support , 1080p60fps on multiplayer , faster load times and less artifacts on screen

The artifacts being reduced is immediately noticeable. Makes the excellent IQ much better not having to deal with them.

Looks to be a change here with the leaves and blocks

I'm sure the shadows are cleaner on the Pro version but it could be placebo. I don't have my OG PS4 to compare now. The IQ is fantastic though, but I expected a much, much bigger leap forward given that Pro has double the GPU power.

The fact that we're playing 'spot the difference' and failing says it all really.

Perhaps they improved the other things a little bit too ... but it is not really visible.

PS4Pro is only a little upgraded PS4, enough for a little resolution bump but not much beside that.

jeez people, this is not a ps5, the pro cannot make the game look insanely different, it looked great on the OG ps4, now it looks even better

So the downsampling in Uncharted 4 doesn't really provide much improvement to IQ? I know it depends on the person, but I just want a ballpark.

of all the games I've played on the Pro it's the most subtle benefit of downsampling but it is definitely noticeable IMO

I find UC4 to be the most impressive Pro game on my 1080p TV.

The IQ boost to an already great looking game just makes it look fantastic. The reduced artifacting because of the AA method is also a huge improvement.

Chapter 10-12 are just mind blowing to look at.

Well, I'll know soon enough. Thanks!

MP is a nice improvement. SP is good, I mean can't ever complain about being a little better than already great and not fucking anything up in the process.

But I feel like the real SP Pro patch is still to come whenever U4 SP DLC comes out. I can definitely see them spending more optimization and having even better improvements when that DLC comes out. I wonder if they can do a 900p/60fps option for SP.

I actually am not the biggest fan of MP right now. The FPS boost is nice and the resolution as well.

However, there is a really ugly sharpening filter (likely to offset the original 900p) that really ruins some parts of the map.

It's most notable on the loading screen when the characters are looking at each other.

Seems like more games should be targeting 1440p on the Pro to keep the framerate steady. Certainly seems like TLOU would benefit from a drop in res.

Dropping from 1800p to 1440p would probably be overkill, it only runs about 4 frames slower at worst. MWR is 1620p and hold 60 better than the standard PS4. Something like that would probably work if it can't be buffed out with an optimization patch.

1620p for TLOU seems like a no brainer change. Makes no sense to me that they're using 1800p foe 60fps when it runs worse than the base PS4.

The game looked unbelievable from the get go, so if it looks any better on the Pro I think my eyes would melt.

I'd like to see it in person, but don't have a 4K TV yet and don't feel like re-downloading the 50gb game/patch. I have too many other games to play, so that's the main reason; but I just beat it in October too.
