I won't call for Kiki's head yet...

Voting for Porco Rosso. We're at the real meat of Miyazaki's oeuvre, and in my opinion the remaining films have few outstanding flaws. They are all excellent works. The only way to sensibly order them is by judging relative strength and weaknesses compared with each other. Porco Rosso is a fun ride, with breathtaking scenes of the northern Mediterranean, dogfights, fistfights, fascists, cowboys, unrequited love, and deeper feelings of guilt. It's also Miyazaki's most autobiographical work. Compared to the other five films still left though it is more conventional, somewhat less inventive. It is possible to imagine some other filmmaker creating most of Porco Rosso (on their best day), but it is not possible to imagine anyone else doing the bulk of work in Spirited Away, Mononoke, or Kiki.

+2 (1 point for me agreeing with it, and another for it being so nicely written)

You people voting for Kiki's Delivery service have no heart!!

Also the dub has Tim Hartman!! Really, no one has given reasoning for voting for Kiki yet.

I vote for Porco Rosso again.
How dare you get Phil Hartman's name wrong!

So the only Miyazaki I've seen is the first half of Princess Mononoke, but I liked it. Is there any particular order I should see his films? Is it rewarding to watch them chronologically?

Also, should I watch with dubs or the original audio track? (I assume the DVDs allow for both options.)

No order, just watch them as soon as you can get your hands on them. I prefer the original audio track.

Nausicaa was his first major work (besides Cagliostro, which isn't entirely original), and is a fantastic film. Start with that, as it's a great introduction to most of Miyazaki's major themes.

I actually watched Spirited Away first, then Laputa, then Kiki's. Spirited Away completely hooked me, and I just went from there. They're all outstanding in their own way, even Howl's--which I feel gets an unwarranted negative reaction.

Laputa has MARK HAMILL! STARWARS!

And you spelt Phil Hartman wrong!
Also who listens to dubs anyway?

**** I was half asleep when I wrote that this morning!! I meant Phil....

Also, I watch all the Ghibli films dubbed...the only ones I really don't like are Mononoke (Scully as the wolf urghhh...) and the original Totoro one. I guess the newer Totoro one is ok but I'm so used to watching the sub I can't really get into it.

KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE IS OUT.

Remaining FIVE films:

Spirited Away
My Neighbor Totoro
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Ranking..

9. Howl's Moving Castle
8. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
7. The Castle of Cagliostro
6. Kiki's Delivery Service
5. ?

Tough call here between Porco Rosso and Lupate for me. I'm going to have to call out Porco Rosso on this round.

As charming as Porco is, I feel that Laputa is the better film over all. Both films feature flight, and although Porco has some really beautiful shots, the fairytale world of Laputa was just so mysterious and stunning. It even reminds me of Mega Man Legends. What with the world covered in water, air pirates, ruins, robot relics, etc.

Even Mom and Tron Bonne have similar hair styles.
