I had to wait till Totoro got kicked to vote since I haven't seen it yet, but I've seen all the other movies.

Mononoke out.

Mononoke. Too heavy handed in the environmentalism message

See the thing is, I hate environmentalism and environmentalists, and Fern Gully this ain't. Mononoke is hardly THAT preachy, and Lady Eboshi is a very round character with a lot of compassion - putting even whores and lepers to work, paying them far more than anyone else would; hell, most people would tell them to get lost.

If I remember correctly, the brothel girls work the bellows and the lepers actually craft the guns - the lepers being so loyal because of their otherwise outcast nature that the secrets of how to make the firearms are safe from the other warlords. The men all seem to work as guards. It's a pretty cool set up for a town, and for the most part you can sympathize and see their point of view pretty readily.

Hell, for the most part, it's pretty easy to root for Lady Eboshi against the crazy little wolf girl.

They even rebuild Irontown after the forest spirit destroys it. So what's the overall message here? Use the natural resources but don't **** up the environment beyond repair and wantonly kill wildlife while you do it? Well hell, even I can agree with that one.

Waving my vote goodbye to Mononoke.

And :lol at the list haters. Everyone's list would be entirely different.. if I had my way Porco Rosso would be #1.

Also, the animal gods aren't presented as without fault.

...but hey, some people can't stand the idea that the world isn't theirs and theirs alone. :P

I'm not saying its bad. Just a little too preachy. And thats me reaching in order to decide between two great movies. Neither are Laputa, but both are excellent. So its really only a tiny quibble in the grand scheme of things.

I don't think that Mononoke is his best film, but I can't help but feel that it was better than Spirited Away.

ARHG!!!

Uh...

Hmm...

Okay...

Princess Mononoke.

Thank GOD Totoro is out, jeebus. Watched it last night, and it has to be one of the most boring animated movies I've seen in... ever. Holy shit. It doesn't even get remotely interesting until the cat bus shows up, almost a whole ****ing hour into the movie. Laputa>>>>>>>MNT you damn haters.

ANYWAY. Spirited Away. Overrated, but much more interesting than Totoro.

Seriously. Agreed 100%.

I can easily prove your experience lacking, but this is a Miyazaki thread. ;)

:lol You'd probably claw your eyes out if you had to sit down and watch Angel's Egg then.

I vote Mononoke. It's good, but Spirited Away is probably my favorite movie of all time. Glad to see it make it this far.

My thoughts EXACTLY.

-_-

You got points for your love of Brad Bird and your assessment of Order of the Phoenix, but this is quite a knock. How can one dislike Totoro and LOVE Mononoke?!?!?!?

Is it... Spirited Away? Could it be that my favorite Miyazaki film has actually won the vote?

GAF's mediocre placement of the rest of this list redeemed! Taste prevails!

YAY! For all the folly of the rest of that list, I'm glad to see the best film get #1.

Spirited Away was pretty meh. I only started watching Miyazaki films in 2000. Mononoke and Nausicaa were better. However, I like the way Mononoke handled its themes better.

I have a sort of preference to firsts, though, and Mononoke was my first Miyazaki film.

The ones I've seen were: Laputa, Mononoke, Nausicaa, Totoro, Spirited Away.

5. Totoro
4. Laputa
3. Spirited Away
2. Nausicaa
1. Mononoke

I am pleased with these results. Spirited Away is a film with some of the most fluid and dynamic animation that I've ever seen, right up there with Disney. Most animes and American cartoon shows that I've seen barely feature any real animation; instead, it seems to just be an illusion of animation. I know this statement may seem absurd, as animation in itself is supposed to be an illusion of motion, but some of these shows are nothing more than fancy slide shows to me. For example, Pokemon, where the most 'animated' part of these shows are the characters mouths. That, or Flash tricks like in so many cartoon network shows.

Luckily, there are still some studios out there that can get the big budgets and inspirations needed to create such wonderful animation. I can only hope that his next feature, Ponyo, will have the animation to match its ambition, as I believe the picture is supposed to look like a watercolour painting

I've only seen five of his films as well, but my personal rankings would go something like this:

5. Princess Mononoke
4. Nausicaa
3. Howl's Moving Castle
2. My Neighbor Totoro
1. Spirited Away
