spartacus

i didn't vote the killing only because it is such an amazing film for a debut and the noir genre has a soft spot in my heart.

His debut was Killer's Kiss, which, despite it's rather short running time (68 min.), is still considered a feature-length film.

EDIT: Well, shit, actually his debut was Fear and Desire, but I don't think that's been released on video or anything, because he never cared too much for it.

Kirk Douglas mumbles his way into the 8th slot. Time for the next round.

The Remaining Films

The Killing (1956)
Paths of Glory (1957)
Dr. Strangelove (1964)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
The Shining (1980)
Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Looks like a two horse race between Full Metal Jacket and The Killing. Things will get really interesting when we get down to the final 5. Then the real drama begins.

full metal jacket. :(

The Killing

It shoulda been the first to go, as much as I do enjoy the film. Eyes Wide Shut is an incredible film. I am disappointed to see it go first.

2001: A Space Odyssey.

Yeah yeah, I know "it's a masterpiece!" but I'd much rather watch and rewatch the other films than 2001.

The second half of Full Metal Jacket got the most votes this round. On to the next round (which should be short with The Killing dominating the boards).

Guess I'm the only one who didn't like Paths of Glory. I predict it's going to beat one or both of the Shining and Clockwork Orange, which has become cool to hate for some reason. And in that case: **** you! :p

Not to come off sounding like a jerk or anything, but can an Eyes Wide Shut fan explain the appeal of this movie to me?

aight

i think the very last scene sums up the movie fine. the "what do we do now?" "****." exchange. cuz that's really what it's all about. if nicole kidman's character had said "make love" instead, lol, it would've undermined the whole movie. people have the impression that sex is some kind of mutual happy bringing-together kind of thing, which it CAN be, and when it is, it's beautiful--but sex at its base nature is selfish. self-serving, completely. kidman's character knows this, that's why she's so blunt about it. that's why she so revels in telling her sailor fantasy (although i want to know what kind of weed makes one reveal to their partners their secret sexual fantasies cuz that's some scary ass KhRoNiC) to tom cruise's character early in the movie. she's a bored married nympho DYING to get ****ed, and revealing this fantasy was probably the only orgasm she's had in a long time. cruise's character, a common prude, is shocked by all this, goes on out there, and finds out that yeah a lot of people do prefer sex of the eff-word variety.

and boy what a creepy movie. if i had to pick which one was more unsettling, the shining or eyes wide shut, i'd pick eyes wide shut in a cumshot. because what's a crazy maniac compared to a shadowy, faceless organization/cult that basically exists in its own world that indiscriminately kills its own members? and kubrick's trademark long ass takes comes to its ultimate fruition, as every second in every creepy scene makes it that more tense. the questioning and unmasking at the orgy thing, the guy following cruise in the streets, the morgue scene--that was just totally scurry to me. and you never find out who is behind that orgynization or to what is their purpose, or really anything at all about them. kubrick never takes the veil off... that's some masterful shit right there. unless he did and i forgot, it's been awhile since i've seen it.

tom cruise really put in a performance for this too. he's underrated as an actor, as he was great in vanilla sky, born on the fourth of july, interview with the vampire... uh... some other stuff. his character in this is sort of an extension of his character in risky business (another good cruise performance), the prude completely baffled by this whole new world of sex. except instead of being personally involved with pimps and hoes, he sees things that even aoi tsuki hasn't. (maybe.) he's dumbfounded throughout the entire odyssey, and he conveys it well. and this sort of thing is foreign to most of us, so we're right there with him, open-mouthed, goose-bumped, and erect. i found that i could strangely relate to cruise in this. kidman was great in it too of course, but that goes without saying.

it's also beautiful to look at too. the lighting and the use of brown... it's remarkable, and adds another creepy layer of tone. and don't forget about all the eye candy.

or kidman's titties!!!!!

or her ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DID 2001 HAVE THESE THINGS

it's my personal favorite kubrick movie. i think it's his unified vision, his penultimate. it's the kubrickiest kubrick movie.

and to the eyes wide shut haters: what was so bad about it?

I actually really enjoyed Eyes Wide Shut. It's completely spellbinding and creepy, and does a great job of replicating a deep feeling of paranoia. The house orgy scene is one of the most tense scenes I can think of in film, especially when Tom is being confronted by the masked cult leaders.

I can't vote for The Killing on principle--it's just such a tight, perfectly-told story, which is a nice change compared to Kubrick's more deliberate later films.

I guess I'll vote for Paths of Glory just to be different-and I definitely can't vote for the other four.

I have some issues with the film, but I also enjoyed it. Furthermore, it's one of the most visually amazing films I've ever seen. The lighting and photography are just stunning.

I enjoyed Eyes Wide Shut, but it doesn't live up to his other films. Well, I take that back. I'm more likely to watch it than Spartacus.

God I hope 2001 wins.
