Minority Report is already gone? Damn. I liked that one more than some of the others.

Voting Munich off the island. It should have gone before Minority Report went.

How the heck are people voting for Raiders of the Lost Ark? If you want to take out an Indy movie, Last Crusade is much much much weaker.

Jurassic Park. The T-Rex sequence is the only thing people remember. In fact, it's basically the only good thing in the movie. After that it becomes a 3rd-rate adventure/horror movie.

The Last Crusade is better. But it's still ridiculous since Raiders and Crusade should be the last two left.

I'm wondering how many people in this thread have actually seen Close Encounters.

JP was far more entertaining than that boring POS.

Jurassic Park. It's just so... so... pedestrian. Yeah, the CG was neat for the time, but there just wasn't anything about the movie as a whole that couldn't have been done by a lot of other directors.

Did you notice that when they get into the vehicles at Jurrasic Park there is a shot of the door of the jeep closing and that door is clean and new. As they arrive back at the helicopter pad at the end of the ordeal we get a reverse of the shot with the door opening but it is mud stained and beaten up. That is some pretty clever closure and in itself shows the circle of events through visual storytelling. Speilberg movies are never pedestrian.

I think Close Encounters is pretty effective at what it does. Watching Jurassic Park, with all the hype so far away, the movie is a total mess. There's not a good character in the mix and it takes far too long for anything to happen. Sam Neil and (god bless her) Laura Dern fail as main characters because they have no real identity. Jeff Goldblum is, well, Jeff Goldblum. This is the movie that sealed the deal for him being typecast as the kooky scientist. And the movie's got writing problems. Laura Dern diagnoses a sick dino by noticing its eyes are dilated? What's the first thing any doctor does to a patient? Check to see if the eyes are dilated! Did they hire complete incompetents to work at JP? Seems so. Also, Jeff Goldblums perpetual, embarrassing spiels about chaos theory are absolutely laughable. If they wanted to portray him as a kooky thinker, they should have made him one in a field that people don't know anything about.

Yes, the T-Rex sequence is good. Yes, the power station sequence is good. The kitchen sequence is good. The final action sequence is good. The action is by and large, pretty well done, and the effects stand up well. Unfortunately, it takes too long for the action to kick in, and the characters are so uninteresting that as soon as a sequence ends, you're back to not caring.

Close Encounters at least has a good performance by Richard Dreyfuss (and heck, Truffaut). It's a pretty understated movie (for the most part) and I think it only compares unfavorably to Spielberg's other flicks because SPielberg has made some damned fine movies.

The Last Crusade is better. But it's still ridiculous since Raiders and Crusade should be the last two left.

I like The Last Crusade a lot, but Raiders would be on my short list for greatest adventure movie ever made. I think the globetrotting in Raiders is better. I think Belloq and Marion are awesome characters. I like Raiders Marcus Brody better (in Last Crusade, they basically made him into a retard). I just think Raiders does everything better. Sean Connery is the big saving grace of Last Crusade.

Whoa whoa whoa. Are you implying Temple of Doom is better than Last Crusade? Blasphemy

I don't understand the hate for Jurassic Park. And I COMPLETELY disagree with White Man's examination of the characters. I thought, with the exception of the two kids, they were all interesting and was glad to see Malcom come back in The Lost World. I consider Jurassic Park and Lost World as some of Spielberg's best work when it comes to summer blockbusters, right behind Indianna Jones. With Minority Report right behind those. People on here seem to hate movies just to hate movies.

I've said it before, but Raiders is the one I actively disliked after seeing the trilogy for the first time a few years ago.

Close Encounters and Jaws are the two I will never vote against, as they, along with A.I., are Spielberg's best efforts.

You disliked Raiders over Temple of Doom? Temple of Doom is a pacing disaster. And shrieking Kate Capshaw. I think the movie is a total tragedy, because everything up to the point where they actually get to the titular location is pretty damned fine. The movie also has a jarring thematic texture, which may or may not be related to the pacing issues that present themselves once they get to the temple. It gets tonally dark really fast, to the point where it feels like a chore to watch. It does have the nicest effect shots of the trilogy, though.
