Guessing either terminal illness, or some horrible scandal about to come out. Why else would a 68-year-old still in the Hollywood game off himself?

Exactly. I can't see anything out of left field unless like he was in deep with the mob or something being the cause.

Only movie he directed that I didn't enjoy was Topgun, his other work for the most part is excellent.

Really odd that he would commit suicide, must've been really bad or untreated depression.

Those fences look pretty tall, especially for a 68 year old man to scale, he really was determined to go on with this!

I think I'll watch Man on Fire tomorrow in his memory. Been looking for an excuse to dig that out. Such a shame.
Best excuse is that it is Denzel in super scary psycho mode. He was so much scarier in this than Training Day. Really, the Denzel and Tony Scott team was awesome.

Man, I remember being obsessed with True Romance and Tony Scott's style when I was a teenager. That career shift he took with Beat the Devil wasn't appealing, to me, regardless of Man on Fire.

No one shoots a red sky better than Tony. Going to have to do a marathon this weekend.

Its a significant blow to humanity to commit suicide. It just goes to show you that being happy is paramount. Life isn't about anything else. We've all seen people with what we think, would make us happy, do this. I hate what depression and sadness has the ability to do such damage to the greatest gift we've been fortunate enough to experience.

I hope that this causes some sort of peace for him, wherever he may be now.
This is exactly what I thought.

Crazy story. RIP

Damn... This sucks. I loved the guys movies.

I wish his family (including Ridley) the best.

I don't normally think of directors has ones to commit suicide.

Deadline has not yet independently confirmed this report. But the local Daily Breeze newspaper is quoting Los Angeles County Coroner’s officials as saying that the 68-year-old British film director jumped to his death today from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island. Tony Scott is known for such Hollywood blockbusters as “Top Gun,” “Days of Thunder,” “Beverly Hills Cop II” and “The Taking of Pelham 123,” as well as ScottFree Productions which producers TV shows like The Good Wife with his brother Ridley Scott. Tony Scott climbed a fence on the south side of the bridge’s apex and leaped “without hesitation” around 12:30 PM, according to the Coroner’s Department and port police quoted by the newspaper. A suicide note was found inside Scott’s black Toyota Prius, which was parked on one of the eastbound lanes of the bridge, as U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Jennifer Osburn told the Daily Breeze. Earlier today Deadline was alerted that “an older gentlemen who people recognized from either movies and/or TV tried to jump off a pier” and that the attempt was not successful”.

I just don't expect wealthy men of his age and status to commit suicide. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that.

What was happening in his life that he would decide to kill himself?

This is dreadful news. :(

Depression

This thread, and the comments on various news articles about his suicide remind me that so many people just don't understand mental illness. About 90% of people who commit suicide have some sort of mental disorder.

It is unlikely that there is a "reason" that we will be able to point to.

Rest in peace, Mr. Scott.
