DiRT Showdown announced; May 2012; 'simpler arcade feel'

Seriously, who asked for this? All I've ever seen is people wanting more rally, longer stages, better use of rallying heritage etc... and they come out with this?

Anyone know what the sales were like for Dirt 1 vs 2 vs 3? I imagine 2 was the peak in terms of units sold but that's just me assuming.

Only people who want to complain bother to comment on what they want from the series, perhaps?

There have been 2 recent WRC licensed games but neither one was released here in the US.

However, WRC2011 is region free if you're interested on playing it in the States. It's much cheaper now as well. Game UK, Amazon UK, places like that even offer good deal s on shipping here occasionally.

But wouldn't those be PAL versions? I don't import too many 360 games and I was under the impression those wouldn't work for me.

Yes, but it works on the NTSC console.

The same with MotoGP 10/11, Capcom never brought it to NA on the 360, it was confirmed as region free so I imported one from the UK and it works great.

It all went wrong after Colin McRae Rally 2.0.

Agreed, the first two games were incredible. I think Codies has (mistakenly) attributed the recent success of the DiRT series to the addition of modes like Gymkhana :/

Hurry up and make a proper sequel to TOCA Race Driver 3 please! That game had the works... karting, DTM, touring cars, V8 supercars, GT racing, Mini Coopers... SO GOOD.

Preach on, brother! NO KIDDING. Those had great car lists and great track lists too. I'd be happy with Grid 2 (with them correcting the pivot steering), but a new TOCA game would be incredible.

So they are taking all the worst elements of Dirt and compiling them into one game? Does that mean we'll get a Dirt 4 that's just the awesome bits?

Gymkhana??? ughhh that plus the shameless DLC of the last game (which my OCD made me buy them all) makes me know to pass on Dirt from now on.

Oh wow.
Hopefully it will fail very badly.

I bought Dirt3 full price and kinda felt robbed when I discovered there wasn't really
much more rally events than in Dirt2; it was just the same 2 minutes tracks over and over again in half the number of locales (if not less). Most of the game consisted of non-rally races.

Too bad =(

The new one, WRC 2, is region-free, if you want to pick one from Europe. But both are pretty horrible games, physics, gameplay and graphics wise. The first one, named just WRC, is region-locked however.

So you're telling me if I buy this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/WRC-World-Rally-Championship-2011/dp/B00524V1GQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1323710715&sr=8-3

It'll work on my US 360? If so I'll order it right now.

Yes, it will work. I have the game and a US system. Be warned: it is good to play a pure rally racer, but this one is from a low budget dev and has a lot of problems. But still, I like it.

I really liked the X-Games stuff in Dirt 2. Little bummed that there wasn't enough of the stadium racing in 3, but was still a fantastic game. If they separate the two styles with Showdown and Dirt 4 even more, im fine with that.

What i really want out of Codemasters is a Motocross game in the same vein of Dirt.

Despite the fact that I've played some real stinkers this year, no game came close to how much I hated playing DiRT 3. The terrible Gymkhana bullshit, the unironic use of words like 'amigo', the constant nagging if I want to put shit on youtube, pushing DLC ingame hard (and being unable to complete events without it), even fewer rally events than in DiRT 2, absurd amounts of in-game advertising etc. etc.

This sounds worse. A real achievement in crap.

About Dirt3 ... You forgot to mention how it was obviously rushed, how it felt buggy (no pun intended) with tearing and frame drops and how the overall presentation was dumbed down compared to Dirt2.

Dang it. You guys are really killing my desire to play DiRT 3, which I happened to pick up on a Black Friday sale. I really enjoyed the first DiRT and thought the second was pretty good as well, but these negative impressions are disappointing to hear. :(

Well, if you're interested in the Rally and Trailblazer events, it'll be a lot of fun at first. There's a big car list, and 4 rally environments to start with. But... once you realize that each course is just a short chopped up segment of one long track per environment, it starts to get repetitive and lose it's luster. The longest tracks are only about 3min or so.

Not to mention they took out some great things from Dirt 2 like:

-seeing a graphical representation of the track and a distance when choosing single event; instead you just have to pick a name and hope for the best. Doesn't help that all the tracks are minor variations on the same environments.
-being able to take any vehicle out on any track

I like Codie's in general but it seems like they go out of their way to fuck with me, oftentimes ignoring or removing little features that can make a huge difference.

lots of (unfair) hate for dirt 3 in this thread. yes, the game still had plenty of frat guy, dudebro-ness, to it to hate, and yeah, not everyone is going to love some of the new modes like gymkhana, but the graphics were even better then the stellar 2's, and the controls were tweaked to near perfection (for a sim/arcade hybrid). still a terrific game, even if the rally aspect was limited.

NOTHING COMES CLOSE TODAY.™

We are really living in the sad times for racing-genre, where having new Lamborghini, Ferrari or Whatever become more important than having tracks.

Cars have become the new tracks, cars are now what sells DLC, what turns people heads and so on.

We finally have everything we only dreamt of genre a decade ago technically-wise, but in the same time we suffered so much content-wise that just a brief look on the list above shows the utter sadness in which genre is swimming today.

I want a new rally sim. RBR is starting to look a little dated..

that would be amazing. btw, slightly mad studios C.A.R.S. project is supposed to have rally in it, so there is at least that.

That is an amazing track list.
And you summed it what's wrong with the sim racing genre perfectly. It is really sad. A large variety of tracks is what gives a racing game longevity, but cars are what sells them it seems.

Another preview and interview, this time from CVG, with a producer and game designer:

Why do you feel now's the right time to release a spin-off, rather than another full sequel?

Iain Smith: Make no mistake, DiRT Showdown is a fully-formed beast of its own. At the end of each project we try to digest as much as possible about the players' experiences. Through our game data analysis, as well as reading the game's critical reception, we found that DiRT 3 had been offering two experiences: the pure rally and gymkhana.

We've focussed on what those core experiences were - one a "hardcore", motorsports experience and one for thrill-seekers. We boiled down some of that thrill-seeking formula into what makes DiRT Showdown. However, this doesn't mean the more authentic rally content is disappearing from the DiRT series... that will return in a future game for sure.

Similarly, will the traditional DiRT series continue?

Mike Chapman: DiRT Showdown is offering a new and more focused experience within the series and DiRT 4, or whatever we call it, will bring that same focus to some of the more traditional elements of the series. The fact that we're already discussing a DiRT 4 title should demonstrate that we absolutely want to meet and exceed the expectations of DiRT players.

Our Chief Game Designer has actually become an official rally co-driver since we completed DiRT 3 so we definitely want to offer a more authentic experience in future titles. We just feel that the scope of the DiRT series has really now outgrown a single game and we're keen to explore all of the unique styles of play that the DiRT series on a whole can offer.
Sounds good to me, split off this nonsense and give me the rally game I really want in a couple years. It's a win-win. (Although truth be told the destruction derby stuff sounds fun, I quite enjoyed it in Grid.)

Just our luck the sales will be through the roof, and Dirt 4 will be shelved in favor of
DirtBro 2: Hoonigan Harder*
*now with more Ken Block and friends.

I really hope their commitment to traditional rally does pan out in a future game.
But if the more simplified arcade feel is their model from here on out, maybe we'd be better off seeing someone else get the WRC license.

Come on CM, bring on Grid 2. Grid 1, despite the handling, was a good start with the 2006 LMS series in there. Keep that going, add some more series. Maybe throw a little DTM in there, back to the Toca roots as it were.

now all we need is confirmation that they did get the wrc license and we can jump for joy!

They explicitly said the fans wanted more rally in their dev videos for Dirt 3. Honestly if Dirt 4 is more rally then they can release this inbetween if they want to (or if they are trying to split the experiences).

I wonder if they've given up on Grid. Shame, I quite liked it.

Looks like Codemasters has finally ditched GFWL. This will be a Steamworks title:

Can't believe this is the game they finally cave on. I can only pray to the gaming gods it's their new policy for all games.

I'm still 100 percent convinced (after spending a ridiculous amount of hours troubleshooting) that the GFWL client plays a huge role in the DX 11 crash bug. It'll be interesting, at least, to see if this finally squashes that after all these years. My money's on yes.
