Discord has 45 million registered users, 8.9 million daily active users

A few days old at this point, but didn't see a thread on it. From Mashable:

If Reddit is the "front page of the internet" then Discord is its unofficial chat app for the many gamers and gaming communities that dwell there.

While it's not just used for gaming, the voice-and-text chat app was built with an eye toward unseating established players like Ventrilo and TeamSpeak. It looks and functions like a cross between Slack and Skype.

On its two-year anniversary, the company is up to 45 million users, almost double the 25 million that were using the service at the end of 2016. That's a huge leap, especially in the context of the other current usage stats.

  • Concurrent users (peak): 4 million
  • Daily active users: 8.9 million
  • Messages (daily): 200 million
  • Messages (monthly): 6 billion
  • Number of countries using Discord: 231
The growing number of users also means that more messages are flying around on Discord's various servers. The company is seeing roughly 22 percent growth from month to month in the number of messages sent.

I've been using Discord mainly to play Overwatch with my friends, but had no idea it was this huge. Crazy numbers.

Wait, this ain't Destiny?

OP got me.

But Discord, damn that's waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more than I was expecting. I gotta give em props.

Not surprising. It's easy to use, easy to invite users, has a web client as well as clients on every major platform, combines the best aspects of IRC and voice chat programs like Ventrilo and Mumble, lots of customization in regards to server permissions, etc...

I've seen it grow bigger and bigger, as almost all my friends have a Discord account now, and use it for at least one server.

Well deserved. It's a fantastic program and they continue to improve it. My group migrated to it from Skype and it's so much better for us. Voice chat sounds better and is more stable, and the chatroom features are great. It's more or less replaced forums for many communities as well.

Really is a phenomenal service. I can't imagine not having it while gaming nowadays. Hell I'm usually even on it while playing my console. It's just that good. Especially with dual monitors.

The only feature left they could stand to add is phone integration for texts and calls like Razer Chat had.

It will be interesting to see what happens when they start to monetize. When I started using it I kept wondering how it could all be free, but it won't be forever.

Fantastic service. It's strange to me how some still would rather use Vent and shit at this point. I've met some who actively shit on it.

You can pay a sub for more features and what not.

Amazing service, voice chatting can be a bit laggy/weird for a few minutes at times but it's free.
God bless you discord

My World of Warcraft guild uses it, never had a problem since I set up our channel. Makes a nice change from mumble, teamspeak and ventrillo which all caused issues on raid nights.

Discord is such a lifesaver for not just gaming, but for chatting in general. It's so much better than Skype it's not even funny.

Discord is used a great way to communicate with console and pc players for Street Fighter V.

You can also use the steam overlay to open discord with the integrated browser to quickly communicate.

Next thing to be bought by Google, Amazon, Facebook or Microsoft.

Would 100% not be surprised if Amazon stepped in on this. It's directly competing with their Twitch (formerly Curse) client.

I don't understand Discord.

It's like Slack for gamers?

Pretty much, yes. Anyone can setup their own server, create channels (text and voice), assign roles and permissions to those people, etc.

Is it like Switch or Beam? Playing videos and what not?

Or is it more like Skype? Or a combo of both?

sorry, i've never heard of this until today.

I didn't really "get it" at first, but I've seen several communities I hang out in move on over to it. It's growing on me.

I've been using it for over a year now and it's really a fantastic service. I get tons of use out of it even on the phone app.

It's the go to app for gaming these days.

It's constantly updated too with new features.

I don't even use Discord for gaming stuff, but have some non-gaming servers I'm in and just talk to all my friends there. It straight up replaced Skype for me.

It's a fantastic service that companies like ventrillo and mumble were just leaving on the table.

still waiting on video and screen sharing tho

still wondering why the hell my gaming community is still using teamspeak.......council this weekend, maybe we can finally to vote to move to an overall way better system
