Discord starts rolling out video chat, screen share

Wasn't that just a scam?

Sadly, no. And because of:

“Rather than go with peer-to-peer connections, which are easier to implement, Discord will continue using its client-server functionality,” the Discord team explained, “That way, users stay secure.”

Along with VPN's they appear to have gained another tool to cover their tracks. I mean, yeah Skype is spotty, but at least it establishes a P2P connection that law enforcement can actually act upon.

Awesome. I'm really tempted to start paying for Discord.

P2P also makes law abiding users vulnerable. Find another way to deal with pedophiles.

I wonder if this will be used in enterprise. If so, Microsoft should really be concerned.

Nope since Lync&Skype For Business are intertwined with the office suite.

The rug can only hold so much under it before it begins to seep out the sides. :(

You can easily report pedophiles on discord if you have proof of it or know someone who had been a part of it. Just get the exact id's of the messages, and the channels it came from and email abuse@discordapp.com.

I asked myself the same question. Found this:

so they have VC money, which obviously won't last forever
they also sell optional cosmetic items and a $5/mo nitro sub which seems to be less about the perks and more about supporting discord.

they have to be bleeding money like crazy, and they can't be getting that much revenue from the cosmetics/nitro. wonder what will happen with them

It's a pretty common business practice to run at a loss (using mostly investor funds) for a while to get a large customer base, and then start monetizing. It's what Facebook did, and no one can accuse it of losing money now.

P2P dismissed in favour of servers? This sounds expensive. I have seen rest of dosh discussion in the thread and it doesn't sound convincing long-term. I hope what they come up with for profits isn't terrible.

This may sound selfish, but I'd rather not give up my privacy - or the privacy of others - because some people might use a platform inappropriately.

There should be some oversight/better ways to report things, but not at the cost of everyone's privacy.

I'd imagine that Discord has all but killed of TeamSpeak, Mumble, and Ventrilo by now.

I'm also waiting for them to implement a monetization model because that VC money ain't gonna last forever. I've offered to pay them in the past but they've always pointed at the cosmetics.

They already have Turbo

We thought it'd be tasteless and boring to stuff ads into every nook and cranny of Discord

which doesn't mean ads are out of the question, but if they aren't going to do ads at all then how are they going to make money? sell people's data?

microsoft shouldn't have turned skype into a pile of shit if they really cared about not giving up their spot to competition

It actually ran really well on my ancient computer before Microsoft bought it. Afterwards it got worse with every single update. Now it barely runs on my PC with an SSD and a Core i7-4790k lmao.

Wonder if we'll get to a point where every 100 posts or 6 hours an ad will get stickied in chat, or before a video call a 15 second ad gets played.

IDK where else you could stuff ads into the service.

Die Skype, you don't belong in this world.
It was by Microsofts hand that Skype was given malicious ads.

Anything that will make Skype die faster is good.

Interesting, but this will likely exacerbate Discord's child predator/pornography problem.
Are there news stories or something about this? I've never heard of it though I always felt Discord felt a bit weird and skeezy with the meme startup lines.

I hate to say it, but I think this might be a bingo. Data's where the money at.
