Dishonored should be compared to Deus Ex 1 more than Thief.

LOL thank you

Really? You never tried
saving Paul or killing Anna on the 747?
Deus Ex did things like this multiple times.

Deus Ex Spoiler:
To this day nothing in a game has blown my mind as much as when I learned you can actually save Paul. I played that game probably half a dozen times until I stumbled across that "secret" and when I did I just sat there in amazement that it was possible.
I wish more games were like that.

This. Dishonored barely even approaches thee kinds of choices DX had. I remember the first time playing DX and Anna ordering me to step aside on the 747, I thought "I don't wanna do this I'm gonna shoot her even though I know nothing will happen" and BAM! the game just rolled with it. I was stunned. Dishonored has few moments like that. While the end choices in DX were limited to 3 all your choices prior had real effects on how things played out.

I enjoyed Dishonored, but to compare it to (imo) the greatest PC game of all time doesn't do it any favours whatsoever.

I can see where the OP is coming from though with regards to certain aspects of the structure.

I was about to say this too. Dishonored has kinda similar choices in some missions that can actually affect later missions in subtle ways, but it's definitely not on the same level as
saving Paul or the multiple opportunities you get to kill certain characters.

I feel like Dishonored takes about equal parts from both games, honestly.

The biggest Thief bits come from:

The stealth system (of course),
All of the mantling and traversal stuff
The way that loot is scattered in in hard-to-reach areas, all of which is converted into currency that is used between missions. Not to mention the tips you can purchase in said shop.

Dishonored is kind of amazing. It's not Deus Ex 1/Thief tier but it's far better than just about everything that came afterwards. I liked it more than Human Revolution!

No. Dishonored is a very poor man's DX. I was so excited about the game too because Harvey Smith (designer on original DX1 and 2) was a lead on the game and he seemed to learn a lot from why people hated DX2. So I was expecting Dishonored to really just be an amazing spiritual successor to DX with Thief like elements.

It is not. The story is hot crap, the level design in pretty uninterested, the game hates you for going stealth, and your choices generally don't really matter. DX: Human Revolution is a much better DX than Dishonored.

This gives me headaches. The level design is uninteresting? How so? Every location has many different routes, there's many ways to reach your objective and just explore around. Lots of verticality too.

Also, the game rewards and encourages going non-lethal. The more people you kill, the more weepers will be around and it will result in the bad ending. Sure you have a lot of options to kill people but the game in no way hates you for not using them.

Your criticism towards Dishonored is equally applicable to Human Revolution.

If other people agree with OP then I might have a must play game to pick up. Dx1 is my favorite of all time.

deus ex is the goat i agree. dishonored is eh though. it's not bad but it's not that great either. i think i liked human revolution much more.

Sigh. Poor guy. All he wanted is to protect us from shitty games like Thief and instead buy awesome stuff like South Park. In the age of internet hype his endless cynicism sure was refreshing. Miss you buddy.

I unironically agree with this point of view. When will Derrick01 be released from the confines of hell, to ascend to the heavens of GAF yet again?

I was very open minded going into the new Thief but jesus, it's so bad compared to Dishonored. I didn't think Dishonored was the best game ever, but pretty decent. After playing a few missions of Thief, I appreciate Dishonored a hell of a lot more. I hated the mute protagonist and weak story in it and I prefer my stealth games to have dark shadows to hide in rather than predominantly bright colorful areas where stealth seems less believable. Apart from those gripes, the level design and fun abilities in Dishonored make the new Thief it's bitch.

The stealth elements and AI in Thief basically feel like Deus Ex: Human Revolution to me, very unpolished, rough and undercooked. This was fine in Human Revolution because the rest of the game more than made up for it's dodgy stealth game play, it was greater than the sum of it's parts. Too bad Thief only does this one thing and doesn't do it that well. Splinter Cell Blacklist is still the king though for me when it comes to modern stealth games. Shit, I even liked the new Hitman. I'm really not that hard to please.
