This may be the only light side to this story.
Didn't he recently say he wanted to do smaller more personal films? This means he could do that and his baby is left in great hands.
The film with marketing failure? Star Wars is a different beast. After the disaster that was John Carter (Of Mars), I'm not too hopeful of this being anything other than terrible.

Walt Disney Co. is buying Lucasfilm in a $4 billion deal that brings the best-selling "Star Wars" franchise under the Disney umbrella, CNBC reported Tuesday.
Disney has long had a close relationship with closely held Lucasfilm and founder George Lucas, including featured attractions at Disney theme parks such as Star Tours at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida.
"It's now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers," said Lucas, 68, in a statement.
The most important thing in this news is: "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."
REAL DIRECTORS ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO MAKE STAR WARS MOVIES
Yes, but this is Lucas. He LOATHES larger companies and the original Star Wars trilogy was a product of a producer fighting tooth and nail against studios like Disney. To see him sell it to Disney is just so odd. He could have just as easily passed it on to another director without being directly involved, without having to sell it.
Conference call begins in 1 minute.
Wow.
Now we might finally find out if Lucas was telling the truth when he said he destroyed all the original film of the original trilogy, leaving us stuck with the new edition monstrosities. If Lucas left a hidden stash somewhere, Disney could make a lot of money just selling the actual originals.
Wow.
The latest rumor was that Carsland will get cloned for Disneys Hollywood Studios. I much rather have it be Lucas Land.
So some parties like Cartoon Network and whatnot are fucked. Is Fox completely screwed as well? IIRC they were just the distributor and I doubt future deals were signed, but I don't know how that might impact past re-releases?
And man, if this gets us an unaltered bluray release of the OT I'm all for it.
i'm still speechless. I thought he was going to his grave with this stuff.

What does this mean for Indian Jones?
If you read the recent interviews with Lucas, he just seemed so sick of the industry in general, and dealing with fans, and the entire thing. I'm really not that surprised that he was willing at this point in his life to just sell it all. I'm just surprised that someone willingly ponied up the money to buy it all at one go.
