Displaying an Amiibo Collection? Can it be done in a classy way?

I think they look like cheap toys. They will look like that to most other people as well.

If that's a problem, don't display them. If you're worried about people in your home judging you negatively for collecting toys, then just put them away.

Here's my setup:

For anyone wondering I'm using these:

Yeah, I should get some of these. My shit is all stacked up on top of empty boxes.

Nothing wrong with displaying something you like. It's your house, do what you want.

I collect figures and have hundreds of them. They're on bookcases in my office, and my walls are lined with various pop culture art prints and the like. It's my office in my house. While I'm working I can turn around and enjoy my surroundings.

Now, they're just in my office. My wife doesn't care what's in my office, but the rest of the house is 'normal'. But if someone loves McDonalds Happy Meal toys and wants to display them, by all means. They spent the money on the house, they should display whatever they want that makes them happy.

That's not what he asked though. He asked if there's a way to make them look "classy". There's not. No one is saying he shouldn't have them in his house. They're saying that there's nothing you can do to make them look classy and not tacky. I agree. Amiibo are tacky no matter how you dress them up. If you like them enough to decorate your house with them go ahead and do your thing.

Conversations with non-gamers have started over and been about:
My complete collection of Disney Infinity
An ugly WoW poster (which was such a needed ice-breaker. I will forever be thankful for that horrible misstep in home "decoration" for that single reason :D)
A Fallout 3 Lunchbox
A Portal gun
A Dead Space box
A Gears of War grub bust that I "displayed ironically" in my bedroom
A mini NES
and on and on I can go.

What has never started a conversation? My Gaystation. That special charity auction one that is special to me. No one even notices it. Hah.

So err... not in my experience!

Welp, guess I'm wrong.

I use an O Gauge train display case with a mirrored back. Each shelf is the perfect height to fit all Amiibo and the mirrored back really helps give some dimensionality to them.

Not mine, but I did the same thing. Got a display case with clear shelving stands.

Though if you REALLY want to have fun with it, here's a few ideas.

So we had one of those IKEA display cases and we're doing away with it. We're replacing it with IKEA ALGOT track shelving and acrylic risers. I'll post pics when it's done but it's going to look way better.

+1 for the baseball cases.

This is a pic of my setup in my office.
Mine looks a bit like this random pic I found but I have two of these shallow ones on the wall next to the covered normal deeper ones that store the games and movies and such.

And with figures instead of yarn ofc :D But they are color sorted!

I like these too. Hmm. I collect Nendoroids so some of these posts have actually been really helpful to me as well.

For my taste, it's just not possible. I don't have an amiibo collection but I do have a small army of Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions products in my home, which are basically the same for these purposes. These items are so small and colorful that concentrating them in a single area of your home is going to look overwhelming no matter what you do with them. No decor or color palette is going to compliment these things unless you go with stark white. A small group (4-5) could make a nice conversation piece, but when you get into the dozens, it's a wall of electric garishness. That many are going to look out of place almost anywhere, unless you have a truly dedicated gaming room where this blast of color is the norm. Not a repurposed dining room, not a bedroom, not a "home office" or a space anywhere in remote view of your front door. I'm talking a room in a large basement with a couple arcade cabinets and a neon Nintendo sign or something like that.

Good god the judgement in here is just unacceptable.
They asked an honest question so got honest answers, people seem to forget the inherent selection bias of asking opinions about this stuff on a video game forum.

Most people (that you didn't meet on a video game forum) will look at your collection secretly thinking "why the fuck are you collecting toys and displaying them in your home? That's a bit weird to be fair..."

I might not be something you want to hear but there it is.

But you do how you do if it makes you happy.

i'm too cheap to invest in anything to put these things so i just make room in front of my TV. i keep the boxes stored to store them away when i get bored of them and want to put them away.

Yeah, I just put them on my shelf that I already had.

Can you take a picture of your case with amiibo in it?

First off... who cares what someone else thinks about the things you have in your own home? It's your home, not theirs. And there are plenty of popular and successful adults who like displaying their toys. I hear it's almost mandatory for anyone who works for Disney and Pixar (like my school instructors).

Secondly, going off my own experiences involving total strangers who came to my house to set up my internet, help me move, or perform maintenance, and every one of them struck up a conversation with me about my stuff.

"This is a very interesting display! My wife collects those Precious Moments figurines. Can I take a picture to show her how we can display them?"
"Oh this is cool! I used to play games when I was a kid. I only recognize some of them. Where did you get them? I'd love a Pac-Man figure for my office."
"You like Nintendo stuff too? I love Zelda. I take it you do too. Got a favorite?"

Same thing with other random trinkets I have around the house, like a replica gunblade, some Gundam model kits, and my "Zelda shrine", along with a small retro room.

And even if these people - or even my friends - hated it or felt it was embarrassing, it doesn't bother me, nor should it. It's stuff I'm happy to have, happy to have in display, and it helps me be creative when doing art or game design.

Fair enough, it's great that you enjoy displaying the results of your interests as you well should. I have various pieces of framed artwork and photos based on my love of music and pop culture dotted around my home (see below):

But if someone asked me "is there a classy way to display Nintendo toys" I'd answer "no" because I think it's childish tatt that has no place on display in someone's home.

Some people think otherwise and that's cool.

I used to have them on a display shelf, but then I started spreading them out. I put one or two on shelves tables throughout the house (and a couple at my desk at work). It makes them more like decorations and I think it looks a lot classier than a bunch of plastic figures all together on a shelf. This has benefited my Amiibo usage greatly and in some fun ways too:

1. It actually makes it a little bit of a game when I use them, it turns into a bit of a scavenger hunt if there's a particular one I want to use.

2. I use them more often, since on or two are always nearby wherever I am in the house.

3. Less analysis paralysis, since I gravitate towards which Amiibo are closest to me instead of having to look at my whole collection before choosing.

Yeah I can't say I'd ever have random pieces of art hung up like that. Looks too random.

Yeah if you stopped there, with your own feelings about it, it would be fine. You're obviously entitled to your own opinions. I disagree with them and I think you have a very sad view on life and home decoration but "you do you". Whatevs.
But you're also saying:

Guests will not be as impressed as you think they will.

Most people (that you didn't meet on a video game forum) will look at your collection secretly thinking "why the fuck are you collecting toys and displaying them in your home? That's a bit weird to be fair..."

"Guests", "Most peope"? What? This is pure speculation! And you're stating it as facts.
You're clearly just thinking that "most" random people will think like you do. Which isn't actually true. More than one person has posted examples from reality where the majority of non-gamers that visit have commented positively on these kind of things.

Yes some people will always find it tacky and childish and whatevs, but not "most". You can't claim that. It just makes you look very childish yourself.

Part of becoming an adult involves maturing and learning to judge others for their interests and similarly expecting to not receive judgment from others.

Alternatively, fuck 'em. If someone thinks I'm weird for enjoying my habits that's their problem, not mine.

It's a collection I've built over the years so there isn't a cohesive theme or anything but they're generally well received by visitors. I would hate to live in a home with bare walls everywhere you look.

Are you stating this as fact?

I think it's fair to say that more than 50% of people would find children's toys (and that's what they are if we're being honest with ourselves) proudly displayed in glass cases in an adults home is unusual and a bit weird.

Yes, I can't claim this as fact (just as you can't claim the opposite) but you won't convince me otherwise.

No that was not my intention. I'm saying you can't claim either. Some will find it [positive word], some will find it [negative word], some will not care at all. But you can never claim that "most" think this or that without any sort of proof.

I don't think it's "fair to say" that, especially not when my real life experiences say that ~90 % of people that have visited me like/love my home decor. I won't claim 90 % of people in general find it nice tho. I'm protesting your claims because you're extremely negative, you have no proof and it goes against my own experiences.

I believed the words of the loud people like you that hammer on and on about how [negative word] it looks and that everyone would think that I was stupid, and then I was very surprised when the reality was something completely different.
And no I can't honsetly call them "children's toys", when I think of them as toys made for everyone. Why should children have all the fun stuff :)

Alternatively, fuck 'em. If someone thinks I'm weird for enjoying my hobbits that's their problem, not mine.

The typos make this post.

I was able to hold myself from not buying any at smash launch but bought a mario maker one and the OoT one because my nostalgia kicked in too hard.

Seeing these pics makes wish I did get into collecting them.... I do have some empty wallspace in my room suitable for small figures
