Disturbing kid friendly "deaths" in media

Not open for further replies.
I haven't read every page, but not sure if covered, but I always wondered about these two:

In Shrek, at the end, during the wedding, the Dragon flies in and eats Lord Farquaad.

Same sort of thing, in Jurassic Park the T-Rex eats the lawyer off the toilet - I guess this is more the 'comedy death' setting the OP is referring to.

Have you been watching
Steven Universe
lately?

Not to mention
It's, like, the one show where the characters could have been written to not feel pain since they're just hardlight projections, yet most of the violence in the show is played out even worse than it would be with regular humans.

The hand buzzer kill in Batman '89 messed me up as a kid.
Me too, that shit shocked the fuck out of me was I was like 5 or something.
Final Destination deaths left a mark too, I'm not one for realistic gore, unless it's in videogames (Fatalities don't make me turn my head).

Edit: Back when I was still in school, we used to watch Japanese movies sometimes to learn about the culture (my school was Peruvian-Japanese), and I remember this animated one that depicted war, I don't remember which one exactly, but it was very graphic and definitely not suited for kids.

WHO-FRAMED-ROGER-RABBIT.jpg

This disturbed me when I was young. When I rewatched the movie, I would skip that scene.

I remember that episode, Tom needed Jerry pardon sig to enter heaven and he was very límited in time
What's fucked up here is like what did Tom do that's a sin? Like he's a carnivore and his owners specifically keep him around in order to get rid of mice and they usually horribly abuse him for doing a bad job.

It's like you get to heaven and St. Peter is like "you aren't vegan... Sorry bro someone told you it was a veggie burger but it was turkey."

Tom always got the shaft for just being himself.

It was just a nightmare

Still, gotta wonder just what effect Jerry has on Tom's life to warrant that.

That episode of Tom and Jerry where they're in olden France or whatever. Tom is tasked with guarding the king's feast, yet Jerry, being the little shit that he is, ruins everything. Then at the end of the episode, Jerry and his little cousin or whoever that was watch from a distance as Tom gets executed by guillotine and proceed to laugh.

Fuck Jerry.
Ha! That was going to be my post! Oh well, at least I can post the video LOL

The way Vegeta just murders the Ko'd Ginyu guys was a little disturbing, especially how he completely collapsed Recoome's neck.

On Jojo's bizarre adventure: full spoilers
Kars gets sent into space and stops thinking because he's invincible and can't die up there, Kira is about to win but the ambulance called to help him crushes his fucking head and then he is dragged to hell by ghosts, Diavolo lives in a loop of eternal death with no escape, and Pucci suffocates and gets his head fucking crushed in by some little kid. Also multiple people just horrifically turn into trees, people get exploded from the inside due to a weird Aztec God guy jumping in their mouth, a grandpa gets fucking killed by evil water... A lot of innocent people get killed for no reason in Jojo and it really bothers me when the deaths are so undeserved. The villains at least totally had it coming. Also every death during the Made in Heaven time acceleration sequence is sort of horrible because they were supposed to be slightly comedic.

That's right forgot that bit!

You should mention that you've included manga spoilers.

People have brought up Hunter X Hunter 2011, but the example posted was from after they realized they couldn't air the show in a kid's timeslot and moved it to later. But before that point, there was a scene in the manga (and original anime) where Killua rips a guy's heart right out of his chest and shows it to him. Since it was airing in a kid's timeslot at the time, they censored it... by putting the still-beating heart in a bloody bag.

Definitely safe for kids now.

Imagine being a little kid and loving The Transformers. You watch the show religiously, you have the toys, you know the names and backstories of all the characters, etc. Then one day you see a commercial for a movie based on the The Transformers and you lose your mind. You beg your mom to take you and your best friend and you are super excited. Then, the movie starts and your 7-year-old world is rocked to the core:

Hmmm, I'm definitely wouldn't classify JJBA as a kid show. It's full of gruesome shit from the very beginning.

It's in another league from your Naruto/Bleach/One Piece, and even those are decently violent compared to most western shows aimed at the same kind of audience.

This show started looking cute but the further in you go the more violent it gets. Some of the latter stuff is even a bit disturbing actually.

On the subject of anime, Gaara's Sand Burial in the Forest of Death was pretty hardcore for a Cartoon Network show on an after-school time slot.

LOL, I remember telling myself, "It will get better, it will get better, this is from the creator of Yu Yu Hakusho after all".

It surpassed my expectations.

And then he stopped "delivering"! :(

Just watch this .

It's like game of thrones for kids .
And yes , this was a kids show .

That show certainly didn't hold back on deaths.
Somehow reminds me of this.

One from the past. alfred j kwak is kinda known for having quite a few dark , messed up and sad parts.

In the first episode. You see alfred's parents falling in love and they have many kids but are forced to move away.
In the second episode. Alfred's parents and all his brothers and sisters are killed.

Tron Uprising had some fun with this, the characters in the show aren't actually humans, but computer programs who dissolve into cubes whenever they're hit so the writers were able to kill people off in gruesome ways that were still technically appropriate. Probably how Tron: Legacy got away with a PG rating too.

Do videogames count as media?

Because it doesnt get much more kid friendly than World of Warcraft one would assume, except the latest expansion has a pre-launch event with a couple of quite gruesome deaths.

One is burned alive screaming, the other is impaled by some spears and then has some sort of magic bomb basically slowly consume him as he screams in agony until he explodes.

It was pretty cool :3

It was pretty fucked up, and then someone told me that piling unwanted kittens in a sack and drowning them was a common thing back in the day. Yikes.

Unfortunately I don't think this is entirely a "back in the day" issue, one of my best friends had a shitty dad who had him participate in the drowning of a litter. He was 7 years old...

Kirby is the kid friendliest series ever and the entire idea of how kirby powers work is pretty fucked up when you think about it ... SPECIALY in epic yarn, the kid friendliest of the kid friendly game ever .... the first enemy you kill you basicaly crush his inner organs out while he sleeps so you can have a ball of unregonizable enemy "meat" on your hands to trow

And it looks like this :

Blu Ray has been preordered

-Virtual Bart on the Snes had this sequence after losing the pig game where you see Homer eat a Bart shaped porkchop, it was supposed to be funny and okay because "it's just virtual reality!" but still was really disturbing.

This is legitimately so creepy. As a kid, it is a part of why I didn't want to play Virtual Bart anymore.

It also was not a good game so there's that

Eh, that's not death :v The characters are too malleable in that world to be killed in such a fashion

The Redwall books were pretty gruesome for books aimed at 8-year olds.

For example, one of the villains is betrayed by two minions. He catches them and forces one of the to feed the other a dead crow, bones and all (note that these characters are rats, so crows are pretty fucking big to them); the guy inevitably chokes to death. He then has the first guy beheaded for "murdering" the latter.

Then there's one villain who gets his spine broken by the protagonkst. Everybody assumes he's dead and they leave him by the sea. It's later revealed that he's still alive, unable to move or speak, is in unbearable pain, and the tide is coming in to wash him out to sea. One of his minions shows up and it looks like he's going to save him - but the minion throws him into the sea as revenge for earlier abuses.

Then there's the legions of guys who get boiled alive/eaten alive/bisected/murdered and used as a flail to kill their comrades/etc.

the defeat of Joe from help i'm a fish and rasputin from anastasia are pretty intense, no GIF, because I have no idea how to had them here (I am a noob, I know)

Agreed! I still have quite a few of mine in storage, they were brilliant.

Also came to post Watership Down and Animals of Farthing Wood - good to see them mentioned in the first pages. Pretty traumatising as a kid. So good though. Us Brits apparently love our kid's shows to have animals + macabre.

Superman 3

I watched that on a tiny 13 inch black and white television with an antenna in a rain storm when it first came on TV.

So take the horror of this scene and imagine it darker, fuzzier, with scratchier dialogue and "wom wom" sounds as the screen bent and twisted.

It was scary as fuck.

I went to high school with a guy that was in and out of jail from 16-25 for various kinds of assaults, from nearly stabbing a guy to death to smashing someone's eye out with a bottle in a bar fight. Dude is a tough, scary motherfucker.

To this day he claims one of the only times he ever cried was watching Optimus Prime die in Transformers the Movie. Still gets him all choked up thinking about it.

Not a death but a few years ago I watched jumanji with my son and the scene where they pulled the kids into the game made him melt down. Makes sense in retrospect cuz you're basically seeing screaming children being shredded into pieces.

Tho just a few months ago (5 years old) I decided he was Indiana jones ready and now he just says ew gross to the pizza nazis and monkey brains. Hell even come up to me chanting Kali Ma holding his hand like a claw.

Break your kids in at an early age brahs

Yea, 3 of my favorite characters died in one scene, then Optimus bought it later.
Still hard to watch--Brawn, Ironhide RIP.

I also remembered thinking that if Starscream had that kind of aim and Megs was that strong as a handcannon, then they should've done that a looooong time ago.

This, along with Optimus basically losing in the comics and TV show whenever he and Megs would have a fair fight (and Megs would cheat) is why I have zero problem with Optimus blowing their faces off now.
