There are three this quarter.

Dragon Ball: Revenge of Piccolo, Dragon Ball: Attack of the Saiyans and Dragon Ball: Raging Blast.

It's not 4, but they come close.
Thats a really poor comparison. Those three games are completely different genres. And each is on a different platform.. the adventure for Wii, the rpg for DS, and the 3D fighter for PS3/360.

DJ Hero looks really neato, but if I were to get it I'd get the Renegade Edtion because the Turntable... table would be rather handy. DJ-ing is done at a awkward height and can't easily be done on a normal table. But at the same time the game is just so damned expensive :\

If it was $150 for the Renegade Edition I wouldn't be so leary...

It's a new franchise, and I'm sure a lot of peeps are in the same boat as me.

Plus they might actually be good fun.

Oh shnap

I was all set to get this, squirrelled away the $120. And then Criterion lost the Third Man license and I had to (had to!) buy the Blu Ray before it was gone forever. So now I think I'll buy a $120 blu ray player instead.

Thanks, Criterion!

(Or...whoever got the Third Man license from them? I guess?)

I'll buy this over Christmas times when it's probably at least 40% cheaper.

If they really knew how to think long term they would have priced this at around 70 bucks to get the new piece of plastic in as many homes as possible. Take a hit now for long term return. Right now, this fall.. is not the time to push a $120 new piece of hardware that is required to play a new franchise.

They may be in different genres, but it is all part of one "franchise" in the eyes of the license holder (FUNimation) and publisher. You're correct though. I wasn't comparing them one to one, just saying Namco/Bandai can release several games from one franchise in one quarter.

I really wonder if licensing fees have jumped for these music games though. The music industry has long since caught on and they probably want a bigger slice of the pie.

Why? You usually have about three days before it's destroyed anyway.
Because the standard controller is incredibly cheap and flimsy feeling. Not a chance I'd pay $120 bucks for that thing. At least they might have tricked a few people into thinking they were buying a decently made product had Best Buy put out the Renegade controller.

You guys realize that when Activision goes to shit the entire US videogame market will pretty much crash and burn with it? I also don't think anyone can fill the gap they'll leave behind not to mention the job losses.

Then let it go down in glorious flames! Everyone will adapt.

Activision probably figured that planning long term was the wrong move. With Rock Band, and all the imitators jumping in on the same schedule, they likely figured that that market was going to be overrun anyway, so get while the getting's good and then GTFO. It's cynical, but I think they might have been right in their assumption. The market was already getting crowded and fatigue was looming BEFORE they turned GH release volume up to 11. I don't think there was a real long term play.

I like the GAF rule that it's OK to openly troll and wish failure on a game as long as it's not a factor in the CONSOLE WARZ. Try pulling this shit with Final Fantasy 13.

I don't really want to join the hate parade, and I don't usually care too much about what's 'healthy' for pubs (selfish consumer here), but I've thought for some time that all this 'add plastic to inflate profit margins' approach wasn't a healthy one and would ultimately lead to a lot of plastic shit being buried in the desert somewhere once pubs beat the market to death with it all.

I have never ever saw this kind of product as a sustainable/repeatable trick. There is only so much plastic people can take into their living rooms, and the audiences for each of these products has a lot of overlap between them I think (given that they're predominantly music-orientated right now).

Personally I think it's way too expensive to be massively popular any time soon, and the market in general is down. There's realistic ways of looking at it besides "good, they deserve failure, fuck those guys for making a game"

The sentiment is more "fuck Activision for thinking they can sell anything as long as it comes with a piece of overpriced plastic".

The issue should be "fuck the public for latching on to anything that comes with a piece of overpriced plastic" then. And it's not like this game is worse for having an add-on, this isn't Tony Hawk's. By all accounts it seems to be a fun, unique game, which is the last thing to bitch about existing.

For me it's more the case that activision openly trolls us the gamers. So it seems alright for us gamers to openly troll them.

edit: and your avatar is making me want to fall on the ground and flail about.

I tend to try to take this angle, but its so easy to hate Activision. :lol

Activision executives totally made this game. I hear Kotick did the Beastie Boys/Foo Fighters mix that everyone hates.

It's Guitar Hero with a turntabe and shit music. Nothing unique going on here.

Well obviously Activision is doing something wrong because their expectations arent met. Cant blame customer for being burned out on another music game release with plastic peripheral that will be used for one or two titles that costs $100+ as just some baseless troll.

You can probably add in retailer fatigue. They probably didn't order very many to begin with for fear of being stuck with a ton of inventory.

Oh, how I wish this was true for me.

Best Buy is getting in a lot in of this game due to us partnering up with Activision for the demos. We have significantly more copies of this game than we've seen of any Guitar Hero title this year. I guess our store is lucky to be going through a remodel right now, if only for some extra space to be able to stock the game out on the floor.

See now you get it. The game wouldn't exist if it weren't for Activision exploiting the genre.

Means it'll go on sale that much quicker!

I think demo'ing this at best buy was a huge mistake. Everyone that I know that tried it came away thinking, "WTF is this?"

I think that price is the main factor in this. 120 bucks is a lot of money.

I mean, it's not really a "niche" game. You people still underestimate the number of people who like music not made by white dudes with guitars. If it was priced more reasonably, it would be as big as guitar hero or rock band this year. At 120 bucks, however, I don't think so.

I was hanging out with some friends yesterday and they started talking about the game out of the blue. I've got the Renegade Edition pre-ordered and I am looking forward to the game because I think it is nice that the music genre is getting something different than the typical Guitar game. My friends felt the same way, but the consensus was that they weren't willing to spend $120 - $200 on a game like that. I'm sure it will do good in a month or 2 when the crazy Christmas sales start happening. I think people are ready for a change, but aren't willing to pay for it.

I really want this game but I can't afford it.

Yeah my friend would love this for Christmas but the price tag is just way too high for me to justify buying it. Especially knowing these music games always plummet in price.

Great. I hope it bombs and is on sale for like £40 by Easter.

I'm planning to pick it up when and if there's a price cut myself. But:

Let's face it, the majority of people are not into techno/electronica (I am), so we already have a niche market.

I'm also a techno/EDM/electronica fan but I wasn't too impressed with the list of music tracks they released for DJ Hero. I would definitely have preordered if there were less Gwen Stefani, Foo Fighters, Beastie Boys and more Corsten, Above & Beyond, etc. I think Stefani and Co. are great musicians, but they're not who I think of when I think of DJ-ing.

TheGreatDave said:
It's a music game. It's about as far away from GH as a music game with a peripheral can be.

Tossing the "hero" label on it pretty much creates the image of it being part of the GH franchise in most consumer minds. Activision knows this, they slapped on the name for obvious reasons. They are different games but to the general public they will obviously compare them.

I think that we can all agree that Activision would have been a lot better off with pricing the regular version at $99 and have the Renegade Edition at $149. It doesn't seem like a $20 difference would have that much of an impact, but you'd be very surprised.

Does anyone have a link to the previous DJ Hero thread where some people actually predicted this game would sell well?

I was going to avoid it altogether, but if it's going to bomb really hard maybe I'll pick up the "Renegade Edition" for 30 bucks in a few months...

after seeing the videos, I want to play this but I have too much plastic shit in my living room as it is and it's crazy expensive.

I'll probably get it after the inevitable discount in 2010

I don't know why people expect the price to drop so much, especially so quickly. RB2 full band is still $100 at cheapest and that's been out for over a year now. You'll probably see DJ at $100 or so within a few months, but I'm not buying this whole "half price by 2010!" shit. I've already got it preordered for £65 though, so I've basically got half price :D

Looking at this thread everyone seems to agree about price being a huge factor in their decision of not buying this game despite being interested.
As I said before, Tony Hawk will be a success then.

Nobody wanted to be a DJ when they were growing up, however, everybody wanted to be a Rockstar.

Good riddance.

Well, there is significantly more value to the RB2 band bundle than there is with the regular DJ Hero. I don't think anyone minds anything with three instruments and a game being sold for just $100.

I kind of agree with you. I mean - I have two fighting-sticks for my PS3, a racing-wheel for the Xbox 360, two Guitar Hero -guitars, obviously both the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles... And all of them are stuffed in my living-room. I won't even begin to describe everything I have stashed away in the storage-space, but the point is, that I have never had this much stuff under ( or near ) my television before.

And I do also think that it is a passing fad. Guitar Heros are pretty amusing titles - especially the full band versions - but it has already somewhat faded away from my circle of friends. We used to play a lot of Guitar Hero 4 with a full-band setup, but that was months and months ago.

As such, I hope ( and, well, believe ) that DJ Hero is a positively refreshing experience, while still maintaining a familiar music-game feel to it. I was never that big into guitars, but I loved to play drums in Guitar Hero 4, and will probably enjoy DJ'ing more than I ever enjoyed virtual guitar-strumming. But that's just me, and I am probably in the minority - in the niche market the game appeals to.

Didn't Bomb, though. Aerosmith kinda Bomba'd and could be bought 40% off after 2 months (At least in Holland)
