Overrated movie and huge disappointment personally.

It play on it's racist card gimmick, that's all.

Felt sorry for the actors.

BS that Tarantino and some reviews try to sell in "It has something to say". Not really.
If you want to remind everyone how slavery was bad, make good documentary instead. So kids and young people can learn something. Not this pile of mediocrity that tries too hard.

To the first: Please elaborate.

To the second: That is a very close-minded stance to take and a terrible position. Why is non-fiction required to deal with slavery? Or are you saying that only movies without mass market appeal should tackle terrible instances in our history? If that's not what you are arguing then what are you saying?

Honestly i felt this movie was incredible and surprised at the lackluster responses. I would be perfectly fine with it winning Best Picture.

What lackluster responses?

Not a general consensus but just people around here saying they were disappointed, which is to be expected. I really felt it was fantastic though. Honestly the characters were just incredible and the writing was amazing. It even looked great.

How does one bag of dynomite exploding cause a small crater, yet the other bag causes an entire mansion to explode?

We don't know how much one bag contained over the other. The one Django uses is the one thrown in the cage which we don't get to see in while the other is on the back of the horse. Tarantino's character only takes a few sticks out.

So one could possibly have a lot more than the other.

But we do see how much is in each bag. We immediately see the amount Tarantino is holding, and before the house blows up we see the same amount of dynamite before it detonates.

Saw it the other day. It was good, but not "Best Picture" good.

DiCaprio was pretty awesome. Christoph Waltz was basically playing the same character he did in Basterds. I'm not a Jamie Foxx fan, but he wasn't bad.

Also, it is almost impossible that Django would know how to ride a horse in the first scene. Between this and the highly illogical explosion, I have trouble giving this movie a passing grade.

I would rank it under the Kill Bills and just shy of Inglorious Basterds but it was fun. I didn't find the story to have any kind of real message or brilliant commentary on slavery, it just felt like another sandbox for Quentin to fuck around in. It was an okay movie and I enjoyed watching it but I do not see how it's best picture material. I also felt that it dragged a lot in the second half-- the story wasn't engaging enough for me to justify how long it takes to find its resolution. I'd probably place it in the upper half of Tarantino's body of work but nothing more.

Well yeah it's just another pulp revenge film from Tarantino like Kill Bills and IB. I liked it more than IB but not as much as the Kill Bill films. Good movie though.

I'd expect to get a deeper message of slavery from this film probably.

We're asked to take Django as a badass hero who can do anything. There is no need to question it. It's what make the scenes where he fingers his pistol holster so suspenseful.

Dude has "got sand." He also learned how to read, but wasn't a house slave, so it's safe to assume he has "rebelliously" learned stuff.

FINALLY saw it.

Great film. I read the script when it came out and it lived up to it almost....perfectly.

That Mandingo fight was disgusting.

BTW, what was up with the girl with the scarf in her face that it showed a few times. They made her super mysterious and I coudlnt' remember her from the script.

Was that Zoe Bell? Why did she get so much screen time with no dialogue?

Strange.

Yes that was Zoe Bell, and it's a reference to the original Django. The bad guys in that one wore the same thing.

Also, when Leo comes back from his sit down with Stephen his hand is bleeding. Then in the next scene it's bandaged.

I'm assuming there's a deleted scene where he beats up one of his slaves in frustration and they deleted it for time.

Can't remember in the script.

You mean, the premise of the film?

Does Star Wars play on it's space gimmick too much as well?

They said it was an accident on set when he was slamming the skull and stuff and they just went with it, that is why everybody else looked genuinely shocked that Leo kept acting and they kept filming while bleeding during the speech/negotiation.

He legitimately cut his hand when he slammed the table during the dinner scene. He examines the cut right when
he asks the guy to take Django and Schultz's weapons away.
Blood, sweat, and tears, yo.

Also, her role was supposed to be slightly bigger but ended up being downsized

That leaves some unexplained characters, like that of the beautiful lady outlaw whose face is half-covered throughout the film. (The idea there, says Davis, is that the character would drop the bandana to reveal an absent jaw.)

I am going back and reading the thread and read that...amazing!

So cool!

Basically how I felt about it. It's a really fun movie but didn't leave the lasting impression that the Kill Bills, Pulp, and Basterds did for me.

Very enjoyable movie. I feel like Tarantino is becoming a more restrained director, and his movies are improving because of it. Easily one of the better films I've seen in the past year.

Wow! I actually thought for a moment that he accidentally cut his hand in that scene. Then there was so much blood that I figured it was just part of the plan. That's amazing.

I don't think I would call this movie restrained. I really enjoyed the movie, but it's still an exploitation movie. It's a fusing of other exploitation genres to make one explosive over the top film.

Funny thing about the use of the Rick Ross song. Ross was a cop before he became a rapper, so when he sings these over the top songs about being a gangster who murders everyone he is really just playing the same game as Django at the time. Pretending to be a rotten badass.

Saw the film earlier, I really liked the Barry Lyndon vibe. I enjoyed the third act more than the first which surprised me; usually, it's the other way around.

What was the point of that one beautiful black female character that hung out with Calvin? The camera focused on her a few times and I thought something would happen with her but I don't think she even has a line in the movie...

Sheba is Calvin's eye candy. If you're exceptionally wealthy, you hand pick the women you want around you. Concerns of race take a back seat when you can afford a fine piece of tail.

Nichole Galicia(Sheba).

It was so that DiCaprio could say the words "Sheba, baby,":

Schultz after shooting Candie: "Sorry I couldn't help myself."
My reaction: WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING TO DJANGO?! SHOOT THE GUY WITH THE SHOTGUN, OR JUMP HIM IF YOU DON'T HAVE MORE BULLETS!!!

Fucking loved it. Loved Waltz, but DiCaprio deserves a nod for this performance. Completely electric, every scene he's in is captivating. Same with Waltz. When you have Waltz, DiCaprio, and Jackson in the same scene it's incredible. that's a really interesting performance by SLJ, he's got a character with three different facades that he's changing between. Really well done, and despicable in a sort of unique way from the other characters.

Foxx did really well but was generally overshadowed in scenes by those three. I thought the ending was a big rough, like almost anticlimactic when he finds Broomhilda finally. I thought we'd also see more of the slaves reacting to Django's
"black slaver" status
and the drama/conflict that would cause, but it was kept pretty minimal I felt.

I really feel like SLJ is getting disrespected considering how important his role is to the movie. He absolutely killed it, and that he's getting no nominations for best supporting actor at all is sad.

DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THOSE GUNS HAVE ONLY ONE SHOT & THE BODYGUARD HALFWAY ACROSS THE ROOM HAD HIS SAWED OFF SHOTGUN LOADED AT ARMS & CONSTANTLY ON GUARD?

The scenes played out perfectly :)
