So... VersusXIII is on hold and that team is helping finish FFXIII? Did I read that right?
:(

Great to have 13 out sooner, I'll get hundreds of hours out of it like I do every FF, but i really really want Versus. I hope it's not 100% on hold.

But if this is truly necessary then I'm quite happy they're doing it.

From what I read, it's on hold until they finish FFXIII. Getting XIII done is the top priority.

Hopefully once XIII is done, they put both teams to work on Versus to make up for lost time. That'd pretty much produce the ideal result for both games in my mind.

I agree.

It seems more likely that finishing XIII would mean one team returns to vXIII while the other is free to actually do an FF7 remake or KH3, both of which would be great to have this generation both in my opinion and in terms of business, and neither of which are possible right now because all of the A and B-tier teams are locked up.

Well, that too.

The analogy that comes to mind is copying files over a network, if you copy one at a time they go quicker and you get to move on with your life. But if you do two simultaneously it takes both files twice as long and you just get irritated as you wait. So I hope they decide to just have a whole team focus on one project at a time and crank them out as fast as possible rather than splitting them up and pouring money down the drain as we all wait

Unless, of course, they are able to manage it well enough that resources are not sacrificed while working on both projects simultaneously. This news doesn't do much to allay that concern, though

...so there's like, what, 350 people working on FFXIII now? :lol

(hurry up)

so many people.. so little info is known about the game... and thats a good thing.. im all about showing the game in full form when its ready... i would like them to do something similar to what Kojima did when he did his playthrough live and walked people through the basic feature sets

whether the majority of the team go on to work on Versus after FFXIII, or the original Versus team alone do and the rest work on new stuff (FFVII remake lol) it's win win for us :D

I really don't think FFXIII is taking extrodinarily long for a major next-gen production. True, they haven't shown much of it, but that sort of fits with the new trend (particularly) in Japanese development: you really blow the doors off a product very close to its release. That seems to be happening more and more, with major games getting announced formally and then shipping a few months later.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was announced at E3 2k5 and shipped just last week; Final Fantasy XIII should theoretically take even longer than that given its an RPG. It is disappointing they haven't shown much thus far, but like I said, that is the new par for the new course. I bet the game's not too far from completion, but it will probably see 6-8 months of pure polish after that. I could see a March 2009 release for Japan, like what they did with FFXII.

I wish they'd do a SWR, but I could see them staggering it for fiscal year purposes.

I really was kind of getting nervous about Japanese development in general (when it comes to large projects, big budgets, next-gen tech), but Metal Gear sort of blew my pants off, so I have renewed faith.

Have faith, my fellow Final Fantasy fans. The battle system is in very good hands. :)

Is Itou handling it?

Toshiro Tsuchida of FFX is doing the battles. :)
YESSSSS So awesome. Honestly it could be a carbon copy of the FFX system with a difficulty boost and I'd be happy. Since it looks like it involves queueing up moves continuously while your ATB constantly increases, it should be very interesting - hopefully something like Xenosaga on steroids.

Even if they have it done they wont release it this december. It wouldnt be good business with DQ IX coming

Mark my words. FF13 this December in japan. Playable demo this year at TGS(which I am going too :D ) and playable demo for japan right before release.

i'd rather have a WW release early next year (spring/summer) than a Japan release in december and other releases months afterwards
i wont be able to avoid spoilin myself if i had to wait like that :(

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised. If they do a big blow out in August and then again at TGS with the game basically done, I can see it. /wishful thinking

They don't have anything to fear since MGS4 proves that people will buy FF13.

No more delays, just release the damn game.

Don't worry, at least it isn't FF12's battle system :D

I think that Japan MGS4 sales prove that if you put out an anticipated game, you will get your sales.

woah, thats a pretty big leap.

How is that a big leap.

A big budget anticipated game sells well, therefore another big budget anticipated game would also sell well on the platform.

Which means that FFXIII will have plenty of strategy and neat battle mechanics. :)

Really, the FFXIII's weapon transformation mid-battle feels like a variant of FFX's weapon switching, even though we barely know about how it works yet. And they promised that the concept of party would evolute and have a bigger role in battles, something that Tsuchida had already done for FFX (character-swapping).
