DmC: Devil May Cry - Demo Thread [Demo out now on XBL & PSN]

NO it's just as bad as all other hack and slashes, at least in Bayonetta you could just say fuck it and jump/fly all over the shitty platforming.

As has been reiterated over and over, platforming has never been this genre's strong suit. It's just the way the genre is designed.

I mean, to me, trying to make a big deal over platforming in a game like this is like making a big deal over a Mario game that had more in-depth combat mechanics. What good is it, if it doesn't really add anything to what the basic game is all about...?

In other words, was Mario Galaxy any worse off for taking away Mario's ability to punch and kick from Mario 64?

This thread has gotten absolutely crazy!

But seriously I never even realised DMC was such a well liked series.
For a demo to create this much talk is incredible.

Action games as a whole are held in high regard on GAF. Ninja Gaiden: Black, DMC 3 and Bayonetta are held as the holy grails and games like God of War get made fun of.
RE6 is better than decent.

I don't think DmC will fare as well, but I'm not going to immediately dismiss it. For scoring and such it has already proven to be useless, but that isn't a primary concern. It will ultimately come down to providing better enemies and bosses (damage vs health is a big concern) than what we got in the demo. Seems unlikely.
Agreed. This year's FFXIII. A game that tries something new. Doesn't completely succeed but has some strong foundations for a great game.

Seeing the praise ACIII gets doesn't give me hope for the reviews actually blasting it where it counts. Much like ACIII a ton of the problems the game has seems to embedded deep down in mechanics in the game which is infuriating to people who want to dig in the game but can be unnoticed by someone who just cruises through a game for a review.

I like it... it's simple and intuitive and doesn't get in the way. Makes a nice break too.

I'm getting the sense that when you say shitty platforming you mean dull design of the actual platform placement, and when Jett says it he means the way it controls and how precise the character movement is.

I say this because character movement varies substantially across hack and slash games (Dante and Ryu Hyabusa don't have a lot of air control; Kratos has a lot), while the perfunctory nature of the platform placement varies less (hence "they're all equally bad").

Am I off base here?

Both platform placement and character control (just for platforming) are lacking and not ideal for any platforming whatsoever. This is a problem with every single hack and slash game I have played and this demo does not rise against the others. It's just as bad, not as bad as regular DMC, but bad nonetheless.

really now. how flattering.

What'd he say about me? I'm not really in the mood to watch another his 30-40 minute rant.

Don't remember, didn't pay much attention to that part. He uploaded a screenshot of one of your posts at GameFAQs. Something you wrote about him along with a couple of other people.

Playing the demo I spent more time thinking about the possibilities of a new Soul Reaver game then how much I was supposed to be hating the demo. On that note I don't hate the demo but I'm in no rush to pick up DMC either. Roll on sale for PC version.

If the OG team handles the writing I could see Ninja Theory doing a great job with Soul Reaver. Maybe Onimusha too...

ok i went back to original dmc and it really highlights how second rate everything feels in ninja may theory

jumping, pistols, e v e r y t h i n g

dmc1 has that intangible japanese thing where the visual feedback and polish is tuned to point where the simple act of pressing buttons is fucking fun

While I badly missed Dante for most of that game I will admit that by the time I got him back I was occasionally just pulling Left Trigger right as I connected. It was a cool mechanic. Nero just needed more weapons. Or moves. Or something.

I was having trouble playing Dante, lol. Nero was programmed into my hands so hard by that point. Going through SoS right now on a murder spreeeeeeeeee

I don't know how you can play the demo and call the platforming interesting. It's just as bad as all other hack and slash games with platforming elements.

Ninja Gaiden wall run platforming stuff was nice. If you really want to give level design its due in an action game, look no further than that.

Alright, played the demo. I didn't think it was anything to crow about.

It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. I admit that I was pretty bored with the combat. Also, when I got to the boss, she glitched out on me. I could just wail away on her for hours and she wouldn't react at all so I couldn't finish the demo.

Is this a common occurrence or was I just incredibly unlucky?

Either way, I'm really not inspired to buy the game now...

I tried switching buttons in the Options section in regards to L1 R1 (evade) and R1 R2 (Devil angel weapons) for me to play better. They did not work.

They're going to continue to force bad platforming into this genre to "break up the monotony". I'll just be thankful they seem to have gotten the memo on swimming levels.

Is in they weren't binded or it just didn't feel right.

Cause I do know that those actions have to remain on the shoulder buttons and can't be placed elsewhere.

I don't think that glitch is that common but it is a known issue.

As far as platforming is concerned Capcom fucked up when they removed wall run from DMC. They should've improved it and made it a universal move and had some platforming segments around it.

More like it didn't feel right. As my brain retained the default scheme, I found myself trying to Angel traverse instead of evading (basically, I swapped all 4 trigger buttons with each other).

Unfortunately the PS3 ver is bad in terms of cutscene quality, not that I care about viewing the cutscene or the story for that matter. It's an okay demo, faithful to the combat and that's about it.

I still have issues with the story. No, it not about the hair, but all this stuff with people of a higher society being evil. If I wanted to know about that stuff, I would watch the news or some documentary about the subject.

Will I give it a chance at release? Yes. My proclamation still stands: If I am not satisfied with the final product, I will smash the disc and send the pieces to either Capcom or NT.

In DmC, you watch black silhouettes showing off combos in long ass loading screens.

In Bayonetta, you actually play while the game is loading and learn some new moves right before the next scene begins.

This will be like RE6 all over again.

Even better, during those loading scenes you can press "select" and enter "training mode" when you can practice all the time you want. The fact DmC will score higher than Bayonetta is a total travesty that should ban gaming press forever from this world.

DmC made me want to play Bayonetta, so at least something good came from the demo.

So their showing off DMD mode tomorrow? Please don't let enemies DT...please.
LOL... That is the thing that interests me the most.

As long as its not the DMC3 obtuse enemy DT system that took months of collaboration among top players to figure out.

DMC1 had the best system because it was designed around your own DT. DMC4 DT system was just a boring buff, was not very special.

It's probably because GAF has an unusually large number of fighting game fans.

What's the deal with the uppercut after an angel grab, seems to be random. I can do the kicker after a demon grab constantly.
